<p>Izimvo has the pleasure of introducing marketer, voice Artist, MC and radio and television presenter; Bevan Lynch.</p>
<p>Born in the Eastern Cape, Bevan has always been in the limelight with him playing in jazz bands, singing in choirs and acting in theatrical productions from an early age. While completing a BCOM at Rhodes University, Bevan went on to form his own band and record an album which has received numerous accolades and continues to be aired on DSTV&#8217;s channel MK.</p>
<p>Bevan&#8217;s marketing career highlights include working on some of South Africa&#8217;s most loved brands including JOKO, Glen and Lipton Tea as well as Sunlight and Skip laundry powder. Today Bevan is the Brand Manager for Natures Choice Products recently launching a new brand, Natures Garden, into the South African market place.</p>
<p>Bevan has also recently joined East Coast Radio as a late night DJ.</p>

</a>Location: Durban</p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Bevan was kind enough to answer the following questions:</span></p>
<p><span id="more-1428"></span><strong>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q: </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;">The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.</span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">It depends on the setting – I love meeting new people and networking. So in one setting, I may be introduced as Bevan the Musician; Bevan the Brand Manager; Bevan the occasional cyclist and triathlete; Bevan the MC, radio and television presenter.</span></span></strong></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I love spending time crafting and making something from nothing. It sounds weird, but I love finding a use for junk! The end product is unique and in most cases did not cost much at all! So I scour Hospice stores and second-hand stores to find bargains.</span></span></strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"> </span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">Cycling, Running and swimming all relax me – sounds weird but On the road or in the pool, I make sense of the world. The silence helps me unpack all the thoughts in my head.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> How would you describe your dream home and where in South African would you like it to be?</span></span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Open plan, rustic feel softened with antique finds from travels around South Africa with a touch of modern – not too much though. If I could settle in the <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/0_property_for_sale/3_Western_Cape.htm" target="_blank">Western Cape</a> – that would be great!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><em>This question was proudly sponsored by <strong><a href="http://privateproperty.co.za" target="_blank">Private Property</a> </strong>- Looking for something different? How about this <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/1_property_for_sale/3_Western_Cape/35_Milnerton,_Tableview_and_Blaauwberg/96_atlantic_beach_golf_estate_house_for_sale_J37879.htm" target="_blank">R5.5m, 5 bedroom Atlantic Beach Golf Estate</a> home boasting 3 lounges and a TV room.</em></span></span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Marketing in South Africa</strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><strong>Q: </strong><span style="color: #888888;"><span style="color: #000000;">You are currently brand manager at Natures Choice Products responsible for both the individual house brands and the companies corporate branding. How did you first get into marketing and what is it about your job that you find most rewarding?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>It is actually an interesting story. I joined <a href="http://www.unilever.co.za/" target="_blank">Unilever</a> in 2006 straight from Rhodes University with a degree in General Psychology and Accounting. I started out in HR and after 13 months, I asked to move to marketing. Unilever accommodated my request and then learnt the ropes on great brands: Glen Tea, Joko Tea, Lipton Tea and Skip and Sunlight Washing powder. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Looking for a different experience, I then moved to Nature’s Choice Products and it has been an absolute privilege blazing new trails for the brands at Nature’s Choice products. The brands are new, so all the communication is new, and to be a part of the embryonic development of any brand in any market is truly a once in a life time experience. Check out <a href="http://www.naturesgarden.co.za" target="_blank">www.naturesgarden.co.za</a> to see what we have done so far…</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>What advice would you offer those wanting a career in marketing?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Give it horns. Don’t accept industry norms when it comes to marketing ‘best practice’. Be controversial (or at least try to be original) – it helps when trying to cut through the clutter!</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Today&#8217;s typical marketing campaign includes buzz words such as guerilla marketing, social media, Twitter, Facebook etc. What are your thoughts on how the industry is changing and do you feel that South African companies are keeping up with international trends?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> This is a great question. There are a host of buzz words and new media available to companies that can be used as touch points to engage consumers and potential consumers and some brands are utilizing this network very effectively. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> However, I think that in a country like ours where the first world and third world live relatively harmoniously side-by-side, marketers must not forget the tried and tested methods that have made their brands so profitable. So what the social media networks are providing are opportunities to create even more integrated brand communication – which just makes the marketers job that much more interesting. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> So yes, I do think SA is keeping up with international trends.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Besides your career in marketing, you are also a voice artist, MC and radio and television presenter. Which of these do you enjoy the most and are there any other disciplines that would like to add to your CV?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> I enjoy being an MC as well and doing work for television (corporate) – when I get the chance. I enjoy the people interaction and capturing their emotion and character when engaging people. In addition to this, thinking on my feet is quite a thrill. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> In terms of adding disciplines to the CV – I can sing and play the guitar. I was a relatively successful ensemble at University and have recently got together a band of musicians. We have recorded one track already and are in the process of writing more songs, developing a solid repertoire and great sound. Music is very important to me and creating it is very truly awesome.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> What can we look forward to from Bevan Lynch in 2010 and beyond?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Music from the band, more MC work, Television work and working towards completing an <a href="http://ironman.com/" target="_blank">IronMan</a> event – starting with the Half Iron man in my home town, East London in January next year.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?</span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Yes. It has affected my perception of South Africa absolutely. It has only made me and those close to me more cautious every day.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you were tasked with spending a portion of the Lotto revenues on improving South Africa, where would you start?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Education. Absolutely.</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> With less than 20 days to the first African Soccer World Cup, which local brands would you say are a must buy for international visitors looking to sample the best South Africa has to offer?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Music, Music and Music. And <a href="http://www.tigerbrands.co.za/Brands/DomesticFood/SnacksTreats/blackcat/Information.htm" target="_blank">Black Cat peanut butter</a> – I have it every other day on my sandwiches to work!</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> If you were to award the prize for the best marketing campaign of the year, which South African companies would make your short list?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://www.nandos.com/" target="_blank">Nando’s</a> | <a href="http://www.allangray.co.za/" target="_blank">Allan Gray</a> | <a href="http://www.nambrew.com/" target="_blank">Windhoek Lager</a> | <a href="http://www.savanna.co.za" target="_blank">Savanah Cider</a></span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in Durban</strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> What do you most enjoy about living in Durban?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Everything. People, Berg, Beach, Weather, Sport, Art, Music and its size. It is not too big and not too small – just right!</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong> </strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Q:</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> Favorite venue for a fun outing with a group of friends in or around Durban?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Berg – definitely. Although, going to a beach side resort any time of year is great – but I think the berg wins, especially in winter – with a glass of warm <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulled_wine" target="_blank">glühwein</a> next to a fire.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you were asked to produce a television spot advertising South Africa to visitors of the World Cup, which locations in or around Durban would you select as backdrops?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Berg – have I said that already ;); Beach; Bush and yes, the stadium.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>General</strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could invite any three South African personalities to a poker game, who would you invite and what snacks would you serve?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Darren Scott, <a href="http://www.markshuttleworth.com/" target="_blank">Mark </a><a href="http://www.markshuttleworth.com/" target="_blank">Shuttleworth</a> and Allan Gray (not a personality, but still would like to meet him). I would serve Japanese Rice Crackers, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crudit%C3%A9s" target="_blank">Crudités</a> and Hummus.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Which book would make required reading for all school-leavers and which book would you say has influenced you the most?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://www.loot.co.za/shop/main.jsp?page=detail&amp;id=7225572082928&amp;referrer=85884849355" target="_blank">Angela’s Ashes</a> by Frank McCourt – story of determination and rising above. Seriously made my worries seem very small – and it is a great read.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Given a free hour at home, which would you rather do, put your feet up and relax or look for something productive to do?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Do something productive – I am always fixing something, coming up with a new business/creative ideas, writing a song, creating something, crafting – sitting and watching a movie from start to finish with my girlfriend is a rarity – I fidget too much!</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could go back in time and give your eighteen-year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">Don’t take yourself so seriously. Seriously!</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://www.allangray.co.za/" target="_blank">Allan Gray</a> – I would ask about the story of Allan Gray and its development over time. He is an East London gentlemen, like myself ;)</span></span></span></span></p>
<p>We&#8217;d like to thank Bevan for taking the time to answer our questions and wish him every success for the future.</p>

I am a beach freak. My wife and I lived for a while in Seychelles and we spent almost everyday on a beach. I miss it terribly here in Johannesburg. I also enjoy quiet weekends away in the Magaliesburg. Quite often my wife and I pop off to a little pet friendly self catering place we know, cause our little mutt Chutney is a huge part of our family! She has to go too! (thank goodness she also loves beaches!)</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:<span style="font-weight: normal;"> I know you&#8217;re gonna think this is real kitch &#8230;. but the dream home is a little simple place, down on the &#8230; Beach! Got to be around the <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/0_property_for_sale/1_KwaZulu_Natal/4_KZN_South_Coast/all_sales.htm" target="_blank">South Coast</a> somewhere cause I love it down there. <h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>South African Radio and Television</strong></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><strong>Q: </strong><span style="color: #888888;"><span style="color: #000000;">You have worked for a number of South Africa&#8217;s biggest radio stations including Springbok Radio, Radio 702, 5FM and East Coast Radio. What are some of your fondest memories from the early years of South African radio and what would you say has been the greatest innovation in radio since you first started?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Radio years ago was the best. It had a magic to it, that we just don&#8217;t have now. Everything is so serious! I really enjoyed my early days at 702. We broadcast from the mountain in Garankua and it was like a 2 hour drive to get to the studios, but we had a pool up there, a lapa and we braaied over weekends WHILE doing our shows and had huge parties. It was such fun (I don&#8217;t think as much fun for the listeners as it was for us though!). </span></span></strong></span><span style="color: #0000ff;">In those early days there were no egos, we were all friends, having fun. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">5FM was incredible too. I did news on Alex&#8217;s show, and even though we chatted and had fun every morning he was in Cape Town and Ian F, John Walland and I were in Jhb! It was chaos every morning, all morning! </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> I think the greatest innovation in radio is the computer! In my days, the early ones, we had things called records &#8230; Which got stuck &#8230;. And 8 track carts &#8230; Which needed rewinding before you could use them &#8230;. and &#8230;. got stuck! Many times we would put on a song like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeRa3RtBiIU" target="_blank">&#8220;Radar love&#8221; by Golden Earring</a>, cause it was so long, and would rush off to the loo, coming back to hear to the record stuck, playing the same riff over and over and over.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Besides being a radio DJ, you are also well-known as television director, producer and voice artist. Which of these do you enjoy the most and are there any other disciplines that would like to add to your CV?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Web designer! Love it! So creative, I do it for fun, I don&#8217;t have any clients or anything, but I do run my own company websites, and do all the design and programming and updating myself. Nothing fantastic mind you, but I do have fun doing it! </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Of all the disciplines I have done over the year I love being a DJ the most. I miss it, until just recently I did a show for OFM in the Free state but it didn&#8217;t work out, and I left. So &#8230;. If you&#8217;re looking for someone who knows their stuff&#8230;</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Which South African radio and television personalities do you admire the most and what advice would you offer those starting out in the industry?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> May I say the older personalities? <a href="http://www.izimvo.com/john-berks" target="_blank">John Berks</a>, Clark McKay, David Gresham, and the sharpest of them all <a href="http://twitter.com/702JohnRobbie" target="_blank">John Robbie</a>. I admire them cause they didn&#8217;t just walk into a studio and try build audiences through the sound of their own voices, they actually worked on their shows, prepared links, and the golden rule, if they had nothing to say &#8230; they didn&#8217;t! </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Today&#8217;s personalities talk and talk and talk, sometimes just too much! I think if you are starting out in the industry, take time to learn where the industry comes from, how it works, listen to some great broadcasters from around the world (easy with streaming these days) and see what real broadcasters do! Take tips from the guys that have been around, they&#8217;ve been around for a reason! </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">May I say though there is one &#8220;newer&#8221; local personality that I really enjoy on radio and TV &#8230; <a href="http://twitter.com/pabimoloi" target="_blank">Pabi Moloi</a>. I think she&#8217;s got an awesome future ahead of her, and would love to see more like her!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> What are your thoughts on the current state of the SABC and do you feel that enough is being done to promote locally produced content?</span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Shocking, terrible, and sad. The SABC has let us all down, producers, actors, financiers, and the public. They do nowhere near enough to promote local content, they don&#8217;t go out of their way to grow the industry, I mean just look, DSTV has the VUKA awards which is an incubator run by <a href="http://www.bigfish.org.za/" target="_blank">Big Fish school of digital filmmaking</a>, and it&#8217;s free for students, they have awards, they screen the products that the students make, they really try, and encourage youngsters who are the future of this media, but the SABC don&#8217;t, and they could, and should!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Do you feel that podcasting will ever become a threat to local radio?</span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> No. Not for a long time. Local radio is big because of traffic jams and the fact that the largest demographic listening, don&#8217;t have access to internet! Radio is a major form of communication in SA. I think it&#8217;s going to stay that way for a long time. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> I think where podcasting could play a role though is in keeping the archives of radio and making them available for the worked to hear. For example some of the old Springbok radio shows are available on podcast, as are some of the old Capital shows, and every now and then it&#8217;s good to go back and remember, and learn from what those that came before us have done. They set great examples for us to follow. You know, the funny thing about radio, is that NOTHING is new, it&#8217;s ALL been done before, just in a different way, by a different person! Podcasting won&#8217;t change it, neither will any other technology in a hurry!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> What can we look forward to from Paul Freathly in 2010 and beyond?</span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:</span></strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"> As I get older, I just want to live a quieter life, BUT having said that I am dying to pass on all this knowledge I have, in radio and TV, so hopefully you won&#8217;t hear much from me, but will hear from people who are learning from me, changing my ideas and thoughts to creatively blend into today&#8217;s mainstream media, on TV and radio all over SA.</span></span></span></p>
<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></span></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Oh yes. We live in a prison, we don&#8217;t reverse out our driveway, and we lock everything all the time. I honestly believe we live in constant fear. My wife and daughter were held up at gunpoint and I was gassed while sleeping and cleaned out, so we&#8217;ve been there, and don&#8217;t want to go there again! I think South Africa is in trouble, and I think the government need to wake up, and react, before our gorgeous country becomes another Zimbabwe.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you were tasked with spending a portion of the Lotto revenues on improving South Africa, what would your first project be?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Health care. I ended up in the Jhb gen about a year ago, in intensive care. I got better, just so I could get out of there! It was frightening! When I went to have a MRI scan done, having to walk down the stairs to that floor cause the lifts were broken, I was told I couldn&#8217;t have the scan because the computer had been stolen! I feel so sad for people who are ending up there because they have no alternatives. We need to care of our people, they make us great.</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> With less than 30 days to the first African Soccer World Cup, what advice would you offer to first-time visitors looking to sample the best in South African cuisine?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I think it would have to be &#8230;. BILTONG! As a hobby I make my own biltong at home, I could eat biltong from breakfast lunch and dinner if I got the chance, preferably on pizza! Lol. SA has some wonderful dishes to offer, but also some that just aren&#8217;t going to be all that well accepted by foreigners! I am not mad about our local food, I love boerewors, biltong and all those Durban curries! And let&#8217;s face it, there&#8217;s nothing like a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunny_chow" target="_blank">Bunny Chow</a>!</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> If you could wave your magic wand and change one thing about South Africa, what would it be?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Crime. It&#8217;s going to ruin our country!</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in Johannesburg</strong></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> What do you most enjoy about living in Johannesburg?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The sea! &#8230;. Hang on, am I dreaming again? To be honest I am not mad about Johannesburg, it&#8217;s not my city of choice, rather a case of living where the work is!</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong> </strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Q:</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> Favorite destination for an outing with a group of friends in or around Johannesburg?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I am a real homebody, love being at home, with the family, relaxing, but if I do go out, it&#8217;s more often than not just to the Brightwater commons! It&#8217;s become such a cosmopolitan place over the past few years and I love strolling around, watching people, eating prawns. I am not one of those &#8220;got to be seen at every event&#8221; kinda people, in fact I would rather not! I am these days even taking my name off the TV shows I work on, and instead giving my protégés a chance to get recognized for what they do. I feel I have been there and done it, and got the wet T-shirt. Now it&#8217;s someone else&#8217;s turn, and I want to help.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you were tasked with commissioning a 2010 World Cup poster depicting the beauty of Johannesburg, what images would you select?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Wow difficult question. Suppose you don&#8217;t want pictures of taxis, potholes or traffic jams do you? To me Johannesburg has an early morning beauty, as the sun rises, over the city, the early morning fog starts to lift, the hawkers come out and set up their little stalls, the warming fires get lit, the traffic starts to move, people start heading off to work &#8230; that&#8217;s the real Johannesburg. The reality of day-to-day life in the city for so many.</span></span></span></p>
<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">General</span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could invite any three South African radio and television personalities to a poker game, who would you invite and what snacks would you serve?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I would invite John Robbie, Pabi Moloi and <a href="http://www.michaeldepinna.co.za/" target="_blank">Michael de Pinna</a>. John would play according to the rules, he will have prepared, studied the experts, and be ready to go all out to win. Pabi would play for fun, frivolously, in a lighthearted style, adding glamour to the event, and would probably win! Michael would pretend he knew how to play, and would fake all the moves, losing &#8230;. to me! As for snacks &#8230; I would be clever, and hold the evening at <a href="http://www.obraseiro.co.za/" target="_blank">O Braseiro</a>, the Portugese restaurant, so they could worry about that!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Which book would make required reading for all school-leavers and which book would you say has influenced you the most?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I wish there was a book called &#8220;Believe your Dad, he&#8217;s been there before&#8221;. Written by me, but there isn&#8217;t, so I would suggest that each individual find that one book themselves, that lifts them up, inspires them and drives them to be more than they are. It has to be a different book for everyone, otherwise we would all be the same person.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Given a free hour at home, which would you rather do, put your feet up and relax or look for something productive to do?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>A free hour? What&#8217;s that? The couch &#8230;. Feet up, relaxing, hopefully watching something good on TV, if not, maybe just dozing!</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> What advice would most like to give the 18-year-old you?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">Make the most of everything while you are young enough to be able to! You get old damn fast, and once you&#8217;re old, there&#8217;s no going back! You want to &#8230;. it&#8217;s just that you can&#8217;t!</span></span></strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"> </span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I would love to see some of the SABC&#8217;s commissioning editors on here. They are the people who make all the decisions at the moment with regards to our national broadcaster, let&#8217;s find out more about them, who they are, why they make the decisions they make, who they think the SABC broadcasts to, those sort of things, hey another question we could ask them is, what qualifications they have for the job! If you can&#8217;t get one of them, you might want to ask young Kamza Bako a question or two, he&#8217;s the presenter of Treasure Hunt on SABC 2, also a roving reporter on Talk SA, an ex radio 2000 presenter and 5 fm presenter, and he&#8217;s only like 24, he&#8217;s gonna go far! Love his work.</span></span></span></span></p>
<p>We&#8217;d like to thank Paul for taking the time to answer our questions and wish him every success for the future.</p>

<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>South African Talk Shows</strong></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><strong>Q: </strong><span style="color: #888888;"><span style="color: #000000;">Your are the host of the popular Rian, your self-entitled talk show on KykNet. How did the show first come about and how would you describe the show to someone who has not seen it?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Well, my producer Ronnie Watt and I used to work on a show called Voorblad that focused on the stranger individuals of our society. Voorblad came to a logical end and we thought it would be a good idea to spend an entire show with only one guest…a South African icon. We realized that viewers wanted to know more about their hero’s and so the show was born.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>How much preparation goes into each episode and how do you go about selecting your guests?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>A lot of preparation goes into each episode. I try to go back at least 15 years in the life of my guest when I prepare for an interview. We have a list of guests we would like to talk to and depending on availability we work our way down the list. We try to speak to icons from all walks of life i.e. actors, musicians, politicians, comedians, sport stars etc.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Q: </span></strong><span style="color: #000000;">Selecting the perfect question is a science. Where do you draw inspiration for your questions from and is there anything you will not ask in an interview?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I try to highlight the moments in the guests life that represents either a turning point or a moment of realization. Listening to the guest is extremely important. I will ask any question unless it will humiliate my guest…you do not want that. An uncomfortable guest is one thing but I still need to respect his/her privacy.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Q: </span></strong><span style="color: #000000;">Which other South African interviewers have inspired you the most?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> No South Africans.</span></span></strong></span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>We record three shows every 3/4 weeks. <p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could invite any three South Africans to an intimate dinner party, who would you invite and what would you serve?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Jacob Zuma,  <a href="http://www.marclottering.com/" target="_blank">Marc Lottering</a> and <a href="http://www.lizzmeiring.co.za/" target="_blank">Lizz Meiring</a>. I would ask my mother to cater! A traditional Afrikaans meal including the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobotie" target="_blank">bobotie</a> and the <a href="http://www.bushveldonline.co.za/recipes/puddings/pudding4.htm" target="_blank">broodpoeding</a>!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you were to start your own radio station, which South African radio personalities would you hire to do the morning and afternoon drive shows and why?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I would keep <a href="http://twitter.com/garethcliff" target="_blank">Gareth Cliff</a> in the morning (but force him to create more parodies with the huge array of voices he can do!) Afternoon drive probably <a href="http://www.111kau.com/" target="_blank">David Kau</a>…damn we need to laugh more!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> What are your predictions for the future of South African radio?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I think personality radio will finally return to our airwaves. Enough with all the repetitive boring so-called hits! More freedom for presenters to speak their minds hopefully.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could give the eighteen-year-old-you a single piece of advice, what would it be?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">Go and study psychology instead of law!</span></span></strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"> </span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo and what would you like to ask them?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://www.davidkramer.co.za/" target="_blank">David Kramer</a>. Always a legend. I would love to know how we can create more of the stuff he used to create. How do we keep a local flavor in our music especially in Afrikaans?</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Ashley was kind enough to answer the following questions:</span></p>
<p><strong><span id="more-1260"></span>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q: <span style="font-weight: normal;">How would you like to be introduced at a social event?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I don&#8217;t really like to be introduces as anything &#8211; a name is enough! Besides, there are so many things that I do that it would get a bit ridiculous &#8211; &#8220;I&#8217;d like to introduce you to Ashley Hayden, Survivor, motivational speaker, voice artist, actress, television presenter and business woman!&#8221; Also I don&#8217;t like to be put in a box, so a name suffices!</span></span></strong></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I love taking long baths, which have to be accompanied by a cup of tea, the telephone, sudoku puzzle, book, specs and sometimes if I&#8217;m in for the long haul, chocolate!</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">My home is my sanctuary, and the company of Charlie and the children &#8211; we hang out, braai, swim, play &#8211; it&#8217;s the nicest thing to do &#8211; i often feel scrutinised in public so being home is a private, comforting, cocooning space.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> How would you describe your dream holiday home and where in South African would you like it to be?</span></span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Open plan, relaxed and comfortable, with loads of room for friends to come and stay. Ideally somewhere on the coast &#8211; where it doesn&#8217;t rain at Christmas!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><em>This question was proudly sponsored by <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/" target="_blank"><strong>Private Property</strong></a>. <h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina</strong></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><strong>Q: </strong><span style="color: #888888;"><span style="color: #000000;">Congratulations on reaching the final two! What was your first reaction when you were first asked to be on Survivor South Africa and how long was it before you agreed to become a contestant?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>My first reaction was&#8230;&#8221;are you nuts?!&#8221; Charlie was a lot keener on the idea than I was, as he is a huge fan of Survivor, and in the past, when the show has come on, I usually head for the bathroom for some uninterrupted reading in a deep tub. When I said to him &#8221; How can I possibly leave you and the kids for a month&#8221; he looked at me and said in a very kind way &#8220;Dont worry, you wont be there that long&#8221;&#8230;! I decided almost immediately that I would prove him wrong!</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Your charity, <a href="http://www.homestead.org.za/" target="_blank">The Homestead</a>, is an organisation that helps South African street children. Tell us about your history with the organisation and what are some of the ways the prize money will benefit the children should you go on and win on Wednesday?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I first found out about The Homestead last year when I did the <a href="http://mediaupdate.co.za/?IDStory=20825" target="_blank">Femina Nearly Nude Calender</a>, and the Homestead were the beneficiaries. I was so taken with what an amazing thing it is that they do that I knew I wanted to help get kids away from the means streets and back into mainstream life, so that they stand a fighting chance for a bright future. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">If I win on Wednesday, the R500 000 will go towards a new house that they are building for the kids in Kayelitsha. It&#8217;s not nearly enough, but its a great start, and I hope to be able to use my celebrity (or should that be notoriety!) to be able to help raise more.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> During your time on the island, what were some of the things that you learnt about yourself and which of your fellow contestants surprised you the most in terms of breaking the perceptions you had of them?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> I arrived on Santa Carolina quite prepared to heartily dislike <a href="http://www.mnet.co.za/Survivor/Survivor/ProfileDetail.aspx?CID=7&amp;Contestantname=GiGi" target="_blank">Gigi</a> on the basis of her profession, and ended up really liking and respecting her &#8211; reinforcing once again that you should always actually meet somebody before you make any kind of decisions about them. Dur! I feel dumb even writing this, but there it is! </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I also learned that women are amazing, strong, determined creatures, and that the ability to succeed depends not on the strength of your biceps, but in the strength of your determination.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong> </strong></span></span></strong></span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Give us a little insight into daily life on the island.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> We&#8217;d wake up at first light, about 4.15am, and then gradually get going. First priority was to get food, firewood etc before the heat of the day hit us. I&#8217;d then go and have my morning &#8220;bath&#8221;, a dip in the sea, accompanied by vigorous scrubbing with sand to try to get the filth off. I&#8217;d also wash my clothes in the sea. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Mornings were usually taken up with preparing to go to the challenge, which was often around mid-day (hectic, because the sun is about 42 deg C then). We&#8217;d go to challenge, and then in the intense heat of early afternoon, try to rest in a shady spot if possible. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">After the challenge, we&#8217;d all head off in search of food again, and then at about 5ish we&#8217;d start the walk to tribal council. From there it was back to camp, sleep and when the sun came up the next day, we&#8217;d start all over again.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> What was the first thing you treated yourself to when you arrived home from the island?</span></span></strong></span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> What are your plans for your share of the prize money should you go on to win and what can we look forward to from Ashley Hayden in 2010 and beyond?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Alas, the first thing I will have to do is probably give the taxman 40% of it, which frankly is a bit galling, but there it is! Then I want to take the family on a holiday &#8211; the furore surrounding the show means that I have been working quite hard, and would really love for us all to spend some fun time together. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I&#8217;m putting the finishing touches on my new Corporate Survivor presentation, which extrapolates lessons learned on the island into the business world, and examines leadership, teamwork and strategy. <p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I will also continue with what I usually do &#8211; broadcasting, MCing, Conference facilitation, voice work, and various other bits and pieces. So that&#8217;s the immediate future &#8211; from there &#8211; who knows &#8211; the Universe is wonderfully random, and presents you with opportunities that you never dreamed of (like Survivor) &#8211; I look forward to seeing what else is coming my way that I don&#8217;t yet know about!</span></span></strong></span></p>
<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></span></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? <p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Fortunately, we ourselves have never been victims of crime. Friends have had break-ins and being held up by weapons, but we have not, and I think it certainly colours the way you view things &#8211; we still feel optimistic and blessed to live in this country. That is of course until certain politicians stand up and make idiots of themselves, and then I think &#8220;Oh Hell! We&#8217;re heading down the same road as Zimbabwe&#8221;</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you were given the opportunity of sitting down with the president. What advice would you offer him?</span></span></span></p>

Without a strong moral and fiscally sound generation of youngsters growing up right now, we will doom ourselves to more of the crime and violence we are experiencing now. I&#8217;d also tell him to give back the R200 000 from the Survivor prize money that will go off in tax, and give it to The Homestead!</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> If you were tasked with commissioning a postal stamp depicting the beauty of South Africa and it&#8217;s people, which image would you select?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could invite any three contestants from Survivor South Africa to a dinner party, who would they be and what would you serve?</p>

I would make roasted cherry tomato pasta with fresh herbs and garlic, followed by a cold lemon soufflé and freshly ground coffee and cream and a large box of the ultra dark Lindor chocolate balls.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> One book that you would make required reading for all matric pupils and which book would you say has had the greatest impact on your life?</span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> If the next Survivor South Africa were to be for South African politicians, which challenge from your show would you start the season with and who would you have your money on for being voted out first?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>We&#8217;d play truth or dare. Malema would be voted out first.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Which other contestant would you most like to read about on Izimvo and what would you ask them?</span></span></span></p>

<p>We&#8217;d like to thank Ashley for taking the time to answer our questions.</p>
<p>Reminder to support Ashley during the 90 minute season finale on MNet tomorrow night at 19:30. The winner will walk away with the R500 000 for themselves and their chosen charity.</p>

<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Mel was kind enough to answer the following questions:</span></p>
<p><span id="more-1143"></span><strong>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q: </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;">How would you like to be introduced at a social event?</span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">Radio &amp; Television Broadcaster.</span></span></strong></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I&#8217;ve had the same car since 1999. I just don&#8217;t see the value in replacing cars often. When this one breaks, I&#8217;ll get a new one. (However if someone wants to give me a brand new car, I will not say no)</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I love going away to little boutique hotels all over South Africa. As long as it has a spa, great room service, good wine and beautiful scenery &#8211; I&#8217;m happy.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> How would you describe your dream home and where in South African would you want it to be?</span></span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:<span style="font-weight: normal;"> Thats exactly it &#8211; I want my house to feel homely, not look like its straight out of an uptight decor magazine. It would have to have a huge verandah with a view for sundowners, a large garden for picnics and kids and a home cinema wouldn&#8217;t hurt. I&#8217;m a big city girl and in Johannesburg I think <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/search/suburbsearch.asp?suburb=Northcliff" target="_blank">Northcliff</a> is the best kept secret &#8211; on a clear day you can see forever!</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><em>This question was proudly sponsored by <strong><a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za" target="_blank">Private Property</a> &#8211; </strong>Looking for the perfect home in Johannesburg? Yip, that&#8217;s right, 7 bathrooms.</em></span></span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Talk Shows in South Africa</strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><strong>Q: </strong><span style="color: #888888;"><span style="color: #000000;">Congratulations on the success of your new talk show Lets chat&#8230; with Mel. Tell us about how the show came about and what it is like being in-front of the camera again?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>MNet Series put out a commissioning brief for the talk show and <a href="http://www.cmproductions.co.za/" target="_blank">Clive Morris Productions</a> approached me to attach my name to their proposal. After an initial discussion to see whether we were on the same page in terms of ideas and content, CMP put my name forward. A while later, we heard that the pitch was successful. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">It was not as strange as I thought it would be to be back in front of the camera after almost 8 years since my last TV gig. There is an ease and comfort, for me, in being back in front of the camera.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>You are personally involved in selecting the topics for the show. Just how much preparation goes into each episode and how do you go about selecting your guests?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>There is a lot of preparation involved. The production team starts off deciding on a theme or topic for the show, then we brainstorm around what are the stories we want to tell or the message we want to send. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Once the tone has been set, the search starts for suitable guests, that are interested on being TV, available on the day of the shoot and will work on camera. Sometimes you might have a guest who is very knowledgeable on a subject but who just doesn&#8217;t work on camera due to nerves, etc. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Once the guests have been selected, in-depth pre-interviews are done with each guest by the research team to get to the crux of what it is we want to talk about. From that interview, a &#8220;final&#8221; list of questions is prepared by myself for the actual in-studio or on location shoot.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Selecting the perfect question is a science. Where do you draw inspiration for your questions from and is there anything you will not ask in an interview?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> <span style="color: #0000ff;">This is a good question :) As mentioned, that&#8217;s why pre-interviews are so important. A pre-interview might be a half hour or even an hour and from that information, we&#8217;re able to pick out the pertinent or relevant questions to ask. On the show, the longest segment we have is about 9-10 minutes which isn&#8217;t very long at all. I always say: You should never ask a question, you don&#8217;t already know the answer to. Be prepared. Know where you want to go with the interview. </span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">It&#8217;s a fine line when it comes to asking something that might be awkward for the interviewee but on the show we&#8217;re not into confrontation or surprising guests &#8211; that&#8217;s best left to Jerry Springer! LOL</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> The show is advertised as for woman by woman. What are the greatest challenges facing South African woman today and what are some of the things that you and your producers are doing to reach the average South African woman?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Whew! Where do we start? I think South African women across the board are concerned by the state of our education system for our children, our safety for our selves and our loved ones, our advancement in the work place while balancing the needs of the home, and when you start to get niche &#8211; women in the townships face issues of lack of delivery of essential services, grandmothers are taking care of grandchildren due to the terrible effects of HIV and AIDS, rural women are still ruled by a patriarchal system, young women are trying to figure out a balance between what culture dictates and demands while finding their own way in a modern world. Let&#8217;s not even get into race. </span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">This has been the challenge in doing the show &#8211; there are many things/issues that separate us but we believe that there are just as many commonalities for women, regardless of color, status, etc and that&#8217;s what we try to focus on.</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Which other South African interviewers have most inspired you?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> I&#8217;m a 70&#8242;s baby and I grew up with television. I think over the years there are a number of interviewers across both television and radio that I learn from. <a href="http://www.702.co.za/shows/johnr.asp" target="_blank">John Robbie</a>, <a href="http://www.metrofm.co.za/djs/robert-marawa" target="_blank">Robert Marawa</a>, <a href="http://www.feliciainc.com/" target="_blank">Felicia Mabuza Suttle</a>, Dali Tambo, Tim Modise, <a href="http://www.702.co.za/shows/redi.asp" target="_blank">Redi Direko</a> and more.</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong> </strong></span></span></span></strong></span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Can you give us a little insight into the making of the show? When do you tape, how many crew members work on the show and how is the success of the show measured?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> The making of a television program is in essence a 3-part process. </span></span></span></strong></span></p>

Over and above this, things like the set, logo, logo music, props, etc is all done at this stage, as well as securing crew to work on the show. </span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Second is production: This is the actual day you record. We record on a Saturday and call time is usually 7am for hair, make-up and rehearsals. Guests start arriving at about 09h00 and we&#8217;re ready to record by 09h30. The crew is about 10 people. It&#8217;s an all day affair! The saying in television is: Hurry up and Wait! Just as you&#8217;re ready, the batteries might die on your microphone. When that&#8217;s sorted, a light could blow. When that&#8217;s sorted, there could be a problem with playing back material. There&#8217;s always something so you have to be patient. </span></span></span></strong></span></p>

I complain like a fishwife in winter but I know we&#8217;re lucky to not have snow and extreme cold. In fact, with the extreme weather conditions or natural disasters that&#8217;s been going on in the world since the beginning of the year, Haiti, Chile, Japan, etc &#8211; we&#8217;re blessed. Maybe the movie &#8220;2012&#8243; was onto something?</span></span></strong></span></span></p>

Only in South Africa can you meet someone in the morning and be invited to their place that same evening for a braai. Let us show you our country, first hand.</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p><strong>General</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> You hosted the popular Studio Mix for over 7 years. What are some of your fondest memories from your time on the show?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>We hosted really great concerts back-in-the-day. We went to Nelspruit, Cape Town and the Rand Show here in Johannesburg with the hottest music acts of the time and there were no less than 15 000 people at each event! Mind blowing now that I think about it. And then of course, it&#8217;s been very interesting to witness artists that came onto the show then as &#8216;brand new&#8217;; grow and develop over the years into these huge brands, and of course there are some that didn&#8217;t.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Having working both on radio and on TV, which of the two do you prefer?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Both have their merits. Radio has a spontaneity and instantaneous re-action that is awesome. You can get that from television but only on a live broadcast. Television because it&#8217;s a visual medium, offers you the opportunity to have layers of stuff happening at the same time &#8211; it should be a feast for the eyes.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could invite any three South Africans to an intimate dinner party, who would you invite and what would you serve for dessert?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>First choice? My closest girlfriends. We&#8217;ve been friends for almost two decades and there is a level of comfort and sisterhood that cannot be replaced or duplicated. We&#8217;ve seen kids grow up and go to varsity, helped each other through the minor loss of boyfriends, the major loss of parents and also been very silly together. Dessert would be Jack Daniels &#8211; ha ha!</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">Q: <span style="font-weight: normal;">&#8220;Stop being so shy&#8221;. I was terribly shy and still am to a degree but I&#8217;m getting better.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo and what would you ask them?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://www.emasa.co.za/node/41" target="_blank">Professor Jonathan Jansen</a>, Rector &#8211; University of the Free State. Doesn&#8217;t he want to be our Minister of Basic Education?</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><strong>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q: </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;">The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.</span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">They would say. Have you met a man who doesn’t have a job ? Well here he is.</span></span></strong></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I hate insects and am petrified of them. I have 2 different colour eyes. My favourite movie ever is <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068646/" target="_blank">The Godfather</a> but I love <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093565/" target="_blank">Moonstruck</a> too.</span></span></strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"> </span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">Strangely enough I don’t really like being away from it all. I do need some time off at times and then I just watch DVD’s and chill at home.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> How would you describe your dream home and where in South Africa would you like it to be?</span></span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> My dream home would have at least 12 garages and if I had that then it would mean I would have enough money to fill them. I think the best place to live is <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/0_property_for_sale/202_Johannesburg_Gauteng.htm" target="_blank">Johannesburg</a>. The <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/0_property_for_sale/15_Durban_KwaZulu_Natal.htm" target="_blank">beach</a> is cool but I don’t really want to live there.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;"><em>This question was proudly sponsored by <strong><a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za" target="_blank">Private Property</a></strong></em></span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Radio in South Africa</strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><strong>Q: </strong><span style="color: #888888;"><span style="color: #000000;">South Africa has a rich history when it comes to radio and radio personalities. If you were to establish a South African Radio Hall of Fame, who would be your first inductee?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Phew, I suppose people like Gerhard Viviers (commentator) and <a href="http://www.johnberks.com/" target="_blank">John Berks</a>. He made it big but also Martin Bsilir because he changed the way DJ’s got treated and respected.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>You&#8217;ve been at 5FM going on for 16 years, what, in your opinion, are the greatest challenges facing the industry today?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I think the access people have to information. As a DJ you have to be on top of everything all the time. Someone will always know something that you say so you can’t hold things over. The other challengers are to try and keep people entertained and listening to you for as long as possible.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Q:</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> Who have you most enjoyed interviewing and if you could sit down with anyone for an interview, who would it be?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> I really enjoyed chatting to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Bon_Jovi" target="_blank">Jon Bon Jovi</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Kowalczyk" target="_blank">Ed Kowalczyk</a>. Also Jon Van der Ruit (Spud Author). What a great guy. If I could interview one person it would be <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Ecclestone" target="_blank">Bernie Ecclestone</a>.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> What are your predictions for the future of Terrestrial radio?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Terrestrial radio will always be vital to us in SA. It is the only form of information and entertainment for a lot of people.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? <p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Yes. We changed where we lived and we are happier. Our perception has unfortunately changed but not just because of the crime incidents.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Not really. My daughter wants to go and live overseas. Purely for academic and job reasons.</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> If you were South African president for just one day, what would you change?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> To which three attractions would you first take an international visitor?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The buzz. The passion. The energy.</span></span></span></p>

<p>Brendan was kind enough to answer the following questions for us:</p>
<p><strong>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event?  i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Brendan Jack. 35. Film and TV writer, performer, director, producer, marketer. Or &#8220;that guy from that film&#8230;&#8221; </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I don&#8217;t know how to fly a helicopter. My favourite movie used to be Glengarry Glen Ross. I sometimes battle to use Clingwrap (surely they can fix the interface, it&#8217;s 2009.) I lived in a monastery in Los Angeles for a year.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><strong> </strong>Pretend I&#8217;m taking a cellphone call, then walking briskly until I&#8217;m hidden by bushes.</span></p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>South African Film</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-379" style="border: 1px solid black;" title="brendan3" src="http://www.izimvo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/brendan3.jpg" alt="brendan3" width="200" height="153" />Q: </strong>With the recent success of South African movies such as Neill Blomkamp&#8217;s District 9 and Gavin Hood&#8217;s Tsotsi, what are your thoughts on the current state of our film industry and are you optimistic for its future?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:</span></strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"> I am optimistic and it is growing. It just needs more product to be put out every year, so the industry has more chance of getting the elusive formula right. If more local films had Peter Jackson&#8217;s backing, input, budgets and international distribution, there would definitely be a lot more succes</span></span><span style="color: #0000ff;">s.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> You&#8217;ve personally been involved in a number of successful local films including Footskating 101 and Crazy Monkey&#8217;s Straight Outta Benoni which opened at number 1 at the South African box office. What, in your opinion, are the key ingredients for making a successful movie in the South African context?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>A solid blueprint in the form of a compelling script, a start-up mentality, a committed team, endless hard work, knowledge of the market you&#8217;re making it for, and a lot of luck. Unfortunately most audiences want to see a slick, big budget Hollywood affair. So you need to create a product that plays to the strengths and budget that you have available. Also, making the film is the easy part when you compare it to the selling and marketing of the film.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> South African audiences are known for not supporting locally produced film and TV. Are you finding an end to this trend in light of the recent success stories?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>There&#8217;s been a lot of support and goodwill towards the films I&#8217;ve been involved in. But we have a rather small cinema-going population, which means you have to work extra hard to draw an audience. With regards to the recent success stories you mentioned, opening number one worldwide and winning a foreign Oscar will definitely bring in the local audience. But for these two successes, there are twenty other local films that weren&#8217;t supported.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> We have a wealth of exceptional talented South African actors. Who have you most enjoyed working with and who would you love to work with?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Rob Van Vuuren was great to work with in Footskating 101. And Robert Whitehead (Barker in Isidingo) has got skills. Perhaps people like Casper De Vries, Sonia Esgueira or Arnold Vosloo (if he can still do the SA accent.) There are a number of emerging talents that I look forward to working with soon.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Can you tell us about what you are currently working on?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Various TV show pilots are in focus groups. (Perhaps there&#8217;s room for a show about focus groups.) I&#8217;m producing video marketing campaigns, specifically looking online at viral, branded content and webisodes; it&#8217;s a whole new frontier. An example is a recent campaign for Puma International, where I plan to run against Usain Bolt in the future. There are a number of these videos, podcasts, sketches and other webisodes on my website. I&#8217;m also currently doing comedy motivational talks for corporates, a short film to encourage blood donation, voice-overs, writing, and discussing the next feature film with various people.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Yes. It makes you lose your rose-tinted outlook. But you can&#8217;t dwell on it for long or it will paralyze you and make you bitter.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?<br />
<span style="color: #0000ff;"><br />
<strong>A:</strong> I&#8217;ve sent Charlize Theron several emails about living at her place. No reply. So I&#8217;m here for the duration.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you were South African president for just oneday, what would you change?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>My car. I&#8217;d also double school teacher salaries.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> To which three attractions would you first take an international visitor?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Tokara winery and restaurant in Stellenbosch, everywhere in the Karoo, especially the Swartberg mountain pass, and maybe Ernie&#8217;s house at Leopard Creek, near Nelspruit.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in Johannesburg</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Which stand up venue in or around Johannesburg is your personal favorite?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The Comedy Underground at Cool Runnings in Melville. I did my first gigs there. Just don&#8217;t expect frills in the basement.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you were looking for locations to show off Johannesburg to the world, which places would be on your short list?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The stadiums as seen from the top of Ponte, sunset at The Westcliff, and the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens. (And a fourth while you&#8217;re in Roodepoort, the Flying Saucer House. If it hasn&#8217;t taken off.)</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Favorite restaurant for dinner with a group of friends?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Grillhouse in Rosebank, Byzance in Lonehill</span>.</p>
<p><strong>General</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-377" style="border: 1px solid black;" title="brendan" src="http://www.izimvo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/brendan.jpg" alt="brendan" width="180" height="254" />Q: </strong>Who do you consider as the funniest person ever?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Impossible to answer. Smith and Jones, Benny Hill and Bill Murray when I was a kid. Dylan Moran, Jennifer Saunders, Bill Bailey, the Mighty Boosh, Jermaine from Flight of the Conchords, Gavin Williams from Straight Outta Benoni&#8230; many more</span>.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you were able to pick anyone as your mentor, who would it be and why?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Possibly David Letterman and Terry Gilliam during the week, Jack Nicholson and Daniel Day-Lewis on the weekends.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Where would you like to wake up tomorrow?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> At my parent&#8217;s guest farm, Clements Retreat, in the Magaliesburg Valley. <a href="http://www.clementsretreat.com/" target="_blank">http://www.clementsretreat.com</a></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong> </strong>Q: If you could to invite 3 South Africans from any era to a dinner party, who would they be and what would you be serving?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I know you said 3, but&#8230; Tolkien, (technically South African), David Rattray, JM Coetzee, who&#8217;s apparently only laughed once in his life, so he could be fun next to the gregarious Obie Oberholzer. (I know, a lot of older white dudes so far.) Henry Cele, sitting next to the real Shaka, Trevor Rabin handling the music, and Kevin Pietersen to serve food and do the dishes. (Charlize never responded to the Facebook invite.)</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Perhaps start with a tuna tartar, with avocado, caviar with ponzu dressing. Then various incarnations of Karoo lamb, including some sort of roulade, all served with a case of Schalk Burger and Sons&#8217; Welbedacht Hattrick red. Then get KP to throw something easy together for dessert, like a sorbet of cheese-stuffed strawberries with Campari &amp; orange confit. All of which I currently have in my fridge. If anyone wanted to get rowdy afterwards, we could make Hayemakers, a drink they concocted in honour of David Haye, the newly crowned heavyweight champion of the world. It&#8217;s Guinness, Pernod and a red Sparberry depth charge. Classy.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong> </strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Marius Weyers, Julius Malema and Riaan Cruywagen. In that order.</span></p>
<p>A massive thank you to Brendan for a hilarious interview. Reminder that you can become a fan of Izimvo on our Facebook page. It is the perfect place to submit interviewee and question suggestions. <a href="http://www.facebook.com/izimvo" target="_blank">http://www.facebook.com/izimvo</a></p>

<p>Izimvo is excited to introduce radio and television personaliy, Mark Pilgrim.</p>
<p>With his distinctive bald head, warm personality and easy going demeanor, Mark is one of South Africa&#8217;s most recognisable radio and television personalities. He has spent over 14 years entertaining millions of listeners and viewers.</p>
<p>Mark has also hosted numerous television shows over the years, including Big Brother South Africa on MNET and Face2Face on SABC2. In 2008 he hosted the country&#8217;s biggest ever television game show, the Power of 10 on MNET.</p>

</a>Twitter: <a href="http://twitter.com/Mark_Pilgrim" target="_blank">http://twitter.com/Mark_Pilgrim<br />
</a>Location: Johannesburg</p>
<p>Mark was kind enough to answer the following questions for us:</p>
<h2 style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-size: small;">Personal<br />
</span></span></h2>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event?  i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> If it was an informal event, my friend would probably just say “This is my friend, Mark”! if it was a corporate event, it would probably be along the lines, of “he has a face that is recognizable from television and voice that is recognizable from radio”</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.<strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> People always expect you to be the loudest person in the room, and are surprised when I am actually a very quiet person!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> <span style="color: #0000ff;">I am an avid reader. Got myself an <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015T963C?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=thesaretheday-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B0015T963C" target="_blank">Amazon Kindle</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thesaretheday-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B0015T963C" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /> recently so love downloading books from the net. I also fly radio controlled chopper</span></span><span style="color: #0000ff;">s</span><span style="color: #0000ff;">.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>You&#8217;ve survived both Cancer and a recent heart attack. What has been the greatest advice given to you during these difficult times?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> It’s more the advice I have given myself I suppose, which is not to let the small problems in life get you down. As the cliché says &#8220;don’t sweat the small stuff&#8221;.</span></p>
<p><strong>Radio in South Africa</strong><strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> South Africa has a rich history when it comes to radio and radio personalities. If you were to establish a South African Radio Hall of Fame, who would be your first inductee?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Kevin Savage! I used to listen to him on Capitol 604 and the old Radio 5. He was a jock that didn’t talk “at” you, but seemed like he was having a conversation with you. I would also put David Gresham in there from the word go. I used to listen to him host the Springbok Radio Top 20…thinking …WOW…one day I want to do that!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Who have you most enjoyed interviewing and if you could sit down with anyone for an interview, who would it be?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>My favourite interview ever was Mel C from the Spice Girls. She was just so lively and fun to interview… and I got her to say &#8220;bliksem&#8221; on air</span>!</p>
<p><strong>Life in South Africa</strong><strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Yep, my wife has been held up twice. Yes, it does taint your perceptions. We have just built a new house and spent more money on security than anything else.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> I am British, so have thought every now and then of going back home. The biggest problem is, I love this country. My wish is that lazy self absorbed politicians got off the gravy train and realized the value of better training our police force and giving them better remuneratio</span>n.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you were South African president for just one day, what would you change?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Tolerance towards crime… and fire every corrupt minister. I guess we would have to look for a new cabinet!</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in Johannesburg</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Favorite venue in or around Johannesburg for a romantic dinner?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> <a href="http://www.dining-out.co.za/member_details-MemberID-2618.html" target="_blank">Pigalle</a> in the Michelangelo Towers in Sandton. They make the best apple &amp; berry crumble!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Who makes the best breakfast in Johannesburg?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Probably Tasha’s in Athol Square. The food is delicious and the presentation on the plate good as well.</span></p>
<p><strong>General</strong><strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-359" style="border: 1px solid black;" title="Mark Pilgrim" src="http://www.izimvo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/mark.jpg" alt="Mark Pilgrim" width="180" height="268" />Q:</strong> Who was your favorite Big Brother South Africa contestant?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> None!! They all got on my nerves after a while! :)<br />
</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Where would you like to wake up tomorrow?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://naiade.com/en/hotels/mauritius/beau_rivage/default.aspx" target="_blank">Beau Rivage Resort in Mauritius</a>. It’s where Nicole and I got married on 7/7/7.</span><br />
<strong> </strong><br />
<strong>Q:</strong> If you had to pick one South African as a mentor, who would it be and why?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Nelson Mandela. A man who inspired change.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Well, you got me thinking about old radio personalities. How about Kevin Savage!</span></p>
<p>We&#8217;d like to thank Mark for taking the time to answer our questions and congratulate him and his Wife Nicole on the wonderful news that they are expecting their first baby girl in April 2010.</p>
