<p>Since his initial breakthrough onto the South African music scene in 2001 with his award winning track, ‘In the Beginning’, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/DJRogerGoodeFans" target="_blank">Roger Goode</a> has continued to evolve. His radio show, <a href="http://www.5fm.co.za/djs/Roger" target="_blank">The Saturday Surgery</a> continues to rack up new listeners due to his energetic approach to radio and production. On-air, his liveliness and presence is tangible and translates into a private party in each listener’s home.</p>
<p>Roger’s unbridled passion for new sounds means he spends long hours sourcing the latest in hot tracks, breaking down boundaries and seamlessly incorporating multiple musical fields into one fluid, heart racing mix &#8211; week after week. Rooted in house music, Roger has been known to branch out into dubstep, drum and base, old school rock, trance and even something popular and typically mainstream. When he’s not entrancing listeners over the airwaves, Roger tours the country extensively, lighting up dancefloors and playing alongside local and international acts across South Africa.<span id="more-1657"></span></p>
<p>Roger also runs a successful business which includes, voiceovers, radio commercial production, event planning and CD production.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Personal</span><br />
Q: The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? I.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: This is Roger Goode, he’s 30, owns an audio production company and he has no fingerprints. Roger once travelled to Guam on a spiritual quest but all he got was a t-shirt and a rash.</span></p>
<p>Q: Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: I’m OCD about cleanliness and phobic about stench and germs and dirt.</span></p>
<p>Q: What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: Venturing back to the mother city where I’m from, switch off all modern technology and just be.</span></p>
<p>Q: How would you describe your dream home and where in South Africa would you like it to be?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: Dream home would have to have a foofie slide off the roof into the pool, a private planetarium and a lego room &#8211; like, a room to build lego in, but that’s also made of lego itself. I like to be between JHB and CT because JHB is business, professionalism, dollar bills, getting things done and CT is relaxing, socialising, centering. I split my time, it gives me balance.</span></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><!--more-->Music Career:</span><br />
Q: Your name is synonymous with dance music in South Africa. Do you feel you’ve achieved all you wanted to in your career?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: GEEEeeeez, I hope not. Haven&#8217;t even scratched the surface!</span></p>
<p>Q: How do you find new music?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: This business has become an online affair. I use loads of websites, blogs, colleagues and friend recommendations. Producers and Djs are also always sending in their new material for a listen. We’re lucky enough to have ins at various international suppliers that give me exclusives on tracks so we can always keep the shows sounding fresh. Keeping up with trends and music is possibly my most important task – If I ever start sounding stale then it would be time to pack it in.</span></p>
<p>Q: What do you hope to give people when you play?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: Eargasms. Ha! But really, it’s that vibe you get when you love a song, or you feel a beat and you get up and dance and nothing else matters but that moment. It’s giving people an escape, a couple of hours to have a good time without stresses.</span></p>
<p>Q: You’ve performed hundreds of shows (on air) and live over the years. Do you still get the feeling of anticipation and excitement when you go on?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: Every week. If it ever becomes mundane or second nature, then it’s time for a new challenge.</span></p>
<p>Q: How do you feel South Africa’s dance music landscape has changed in recent years for better or worse?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: It’s definitely developing which is very positive. The most notable change is that audiences are deciding for themselves what they think is cool. Its moving away from commercial pop and an emergence of so many sub genres, dub step, D&amp;B, trance, deep, funky. I’d like to see SA artists getting more notice on the global platform though.</span></p>
<p>Q: What kind of shows do you enjoy playing most?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">Oddly, some of the coolest shows we’ve done lately were a series of under 18 school parties as part of the Saturday Surgery Album tour. Three schools won the opportunity to host a 5FM party and they were mind blowing. Those kids are so hungry for music, they know how to dance, they are so carefree. It was such a refreshing vibe.</span></p>
<p>Q: Do you have any shows that stick out in your mind as particularly special?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: Playing alongside Groove Armada earlier this year was pretty special because they’re an outfit that I have always admired. They have a few tracks that I always have in my record folder as fail proof for most crowds so being able to see them live in action again was awesome.</span></p>
<p>Q: How important do you think it is for musicians/ creative minds to meet and collaborate?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: It’s essential! How else are we ever supposed to learn new things?</span></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Life in South Africa</span><br />
Q: Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: I think everyone has been affected in one way or another but it absolutely hasn’t changed my perception of the country. Crime is everywhere. I don’t condone it but in Africa we have legitimate economic problems at the root of poverty-motivated crime. Of course that does not account for all of it but I’d think it was the majority. A lot of first world countries suffer from ridiculous crime rates when the population are looked after with free healthcare, government housing, the dole and so on. There is less reason to claim poverty and so a lot of their crime is purely malicious or gang motivated. That, to me, would be far more concerning.</span></p>
<p>Q: Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: Never seriously. I think if career opportunities gave me a platform to play on more often on the international stage then places like Spain, New York, Miami or Los Angeles would have a certain appeal.</span></p>
<p>Q: If you were given the opportunity of sitting down with the president, what advice would you offer him?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: Don’t swim for an hour after eating, always wear clean underwear and never put a fork in a toaster.</span></p>
<p>Q: South Africa’s greatest musical export is?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: <a href="http://www.djblackcoffee.org/about%20the%20founder.html" target="_blank">Black Coffee</a> and my old friend <a href="https://www.facebook.com/tashabaxtersa" target="_blank">Tasha Baxter</a>!</span></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Life in Joburg</span><br />
Q: What do you enjoy the most about living in Joburg?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: It’s busy. Joburg is always buzzing. There’s no reason to be sitting back and doing nothing.</span></p>
<p>Q: Favourite restaurant in or around Joburg for a romantic dinner?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: I don’t know about romance – my idea of a date is shouting “Kiss me!” repeatedly into a girls face until she caves under pressure. BUT, I love <a href="http://www.safindit.co.za/the-baron-bryanston-on-main-road/" target="_blank">the Baron on Main.</a> Red meat! You get in my mouth.</span></p>
<p>Q: What is the one place in Joburg that is a must visit for all tourists?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: My bedroom. I mean… <a href="http://www.safindit.co.za/gold-reef-city/" target="_blank">Gold Reef City</a>. I’ve never been but I probably should.</span></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">General</span><br />
Q: If you were able to pick anyone as your mentor, who would it be and why?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: Probably Pete Tong of BBC’s Radio One. He has been doing his show for around 20 years. He is still effortlessly cool. He has an in with all of the big players in the dance scene. He is the ultimate radio DJ.</span></p>
<p>Q: One book that you would make required reading for all matric pupils?<br />
<span style="color: #c93120;">A: The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy – Douglas Adams.</span></p>

He made his name as the frontman of rock band <a href="http://www.myspace.com/playcassette" target="_blank">Cassette</a>, who started to make waves locally around 2005 and went on to win their first SAMA in 2007 for ‘Best Rock Album’ for ‘Welcome Back to Earth’.They later racked up 6 more nominations and another win, 2 MTV award nominations, 2 MK Award nominations and 7 Top 40 hits including ‘I don’t like Mondays’ and ‘Who do you trust?’.</p>
<p>Cassette have supported some international artists including Pink, Evanescence, Eagle-Eye Cherry and BLØF. They were the opening act for the 46664 Concert in December 2007.<br />
The band has toured Europe and were the first South African rock band to visit Japan in January 2008.<br />
More recently Jon has been lending his voice and passion for music to a rock show on 5FM every Thursday night, where he plays the best and latest in local and international rock music and interviews the hottest acts.<br />
Cassette are taking a small break right now while Jon puts the finishing touches on his debut solo album to be released soon!</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong><span id="more-1649"></span>Personal</strong></span><br />
Q: The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: A friend would probably say : &#8220;His name is Jon. Get him a drink.&#8221;</span></p>
<p>Q: Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favourite movie.<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: I cry at gigs. When something is so good it blows my head off, i just get really emotional!! LOL!!! One Oppikoppi Shadow Club made my cry. At another one Fokofpolisiekar did.</span></p>
<p>Q: What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: Surfing!!</span></p>
<p>Q: How would you describe your dream home and where in South Africa would you like it to be?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: A huge beautiful bungalow in a forest. But in the heart of Cape Town so it could feel like I lived in a forest in the middle of nowhere but I’d actually only be 2 minutes from town :) Oh and a swimming pool!!!</span></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Music/ DJing etc:</strong></span><br />
Q: Cassette made a big mark on the local and international scene in a very short space. What do you think it is about the band that grabbed people so fast?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: I&#8217;m not really sure we did grab people fast. It didn’t feel fast at all. It felt like years and years of slog work! I know that when we first started we WANTED people to notice us. We rehearsed 4 or 5 times a week for at least 2 years! It was hectic. Plus we wanted our album to sound like an international production because I think there was a lot of sloppy album productions going on at that time. Maybe people responded to our enthusiasm. We just came out of the gates swinging and even if you didn’t like us, you had to notice us!</span></p>
<p>Q: You guys have accumulated a whole bunch of accolades along the way. What do they mean personally to you and the band, but also for business?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: I&#8217;ll never forget the first SAMA Award we won! We were in the Best Rock Category with all of our idols like Just Jinjer and Wonderboom and Prime Circle! We were the underdog! When they called our name I could NOT contain myself. I wasn&#8217;t all cool and suave! I was jumping up and down on my seat screaming!!!! No one even knew who we were at the time! LOL!!!! Good days!</span></p>
<p>Q: You suddenly appeared on people’s radios a little while back. How did that come about?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: I&#8217;ve always had a huge passion for radio. I tried for many years to get on to 5fm but eventually gave up. But I still loved radio so I went to UJFM and they let me come do a weekly show and I loved it there. Somehow, when 5FM decided they were going to try a rock show they called me! I was blown away and so, so, so excited! I can tell you this: if they had chose someone else I would have been SOOOOO jealous!</span></p>
<p>Q: What are your thoughts on the current state of the SA music scene and do you feel that enough is being done to promote local talent (particularly on radio)?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: Personally I think the SA music scene is healthier than it’s ever been! It’s an exciting time to be a local band!</span></p>
<p>Q: You’ve had the chance to interview some amazing bands/musicians on your show. Which would be your highlights?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A:<a href="http://www.5fm.co.za/djs/JonSavage/podcast-archive" target="_blank"> I think Slash </a>because he is a childhood hero and is pretty much the reason I started playing guitar in the first place! But someone asked me this question the other day and started reminding me of all these interviews I have done! I&#8217;ve forgotten most of them! NOT because they weren’t memorable, but because my brain doesn’t work so much in the past! It&#8217;s always trying to figure out what to do next!</span></p>
<p>Q: Besides being a radio DJ and musician, are there any other talents you have/ careers you’d try your hand at?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: I was commercials director! My two passions since childhood was music and film and I will always be involved in both of them!!! But I do have a company called &#8220;Pocket Love Studios&#8221; where we compose and produce sound tracks for local and international adverts and films.</span></p>
<p>Q: Tell us a bit about where the idea came from for your new <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-offical-sa-music-industry/id448036961" target="_blank">Music Industry Podcasts</a>?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: I&#8217;ve been a bulldozer in the SA music industry for many years. Just on my own path, ignoring what everyone was telling me, making mistake after mistake after mistake! In all these years I can honestly say we&#8217;ve made some of the best decisions of any band ever and also the worst decisions of any band ever. So much of the SA music industry happens behind closed doors in rooms that no one even knows exist! It&#8217;s taken me YEARS to figure out so many things that I wish I&#8217;d known when I&#8217;d started my band! This podcast is my attempt to talk to successful people in the industry and just unlock all those doors so that new bands can get a much better understanding of how the industry works and not make the same mistakes that hundreds of bands have made before them!</span></p>
<p>Q: what do you hope to achieve/ give people with them?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: Just a better understanding of the TRUE nature of the music industry -do&#8217;s and don’ts and pitfalls! There are a few people in this industry whose entire business preys off of the younger, inexperienced musicians and those people can fuck your career up for years! We&#8217;ve been down this path! I&#8217;m trying to shine a little bit of a light on educating musicians so as not to fall into these traps!</span></p>
<p>Q: Do you feel that podcasting will ever become a threat to local radio?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: Nope! I love my podcasts. I love radio!</span></p>
<p>Q: Cassette have just released the very catchy and cool single, ‘Gogogo’. Any clues as to what the band is going to be doing in the near future?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: We are taking a little break so I can focus on my solo album! I&#8217;m a few weeks from releasing the first single from my debut solo album! I’m SO excited about this!!!!</span></p>
<p>Q: How did you end up working with<a href="http://www.museke.com/Jr" target="_blank"> JR</a> on the track?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: We are huge fans of his work!!! And I always wanted to work with him. He came that day and blew me away!!! I think there are a lot of &#8220;wannabe&#8221; rappers out there. JR is NOT one of them. He is the real deal!!!</span></p>
<p>Q: Would you say that Cassette is moving in a new direction sound-wise?<br />
A: Possibly. But as I said, we are taking a break. I’m extremely excited about the new sound and direction of my solo album! It&#8217;s huge and fun!</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></span></p>
<p>Q: Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: At one stage I was thinking about London. Then, another stage New York. Then another Amserdam. Then another Berlin. But fuck em all! SA is the only place to be.</span></p>
<p>Q: If you were given the opportunity of sitting down with the president, what advice would you offer him?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: To make sure he has the new Two Door Cinema Club album on his ipod.</span></p>
<p>Q: If you were tasked with spending a portion of the Lotto revenues on improving South Africa, what would your first project be?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: Music Schools everywhere!!! Free ones!!!</span></p>
<p>Q: If you could choose anyone to be president of South Africa, who would it be?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: <a href="http://www.facebook.com/francois.vancoke" target="_blank">Francois Van Coke</a></span></p>
<p>Q: One book that you would make required reading for all matric pupils?<br />
A: <a href="http://jonathanball.bookslive.co.za/blog/2009/09/14/rian-malans-new-book-resident-alien/" target="_blank">Resident Alien &#8211; Rian Malan</a></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Life in Johannesburg</strong></span><br />
Q: What do you enjoy the most about living in Joburg?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: The travelling to Cape Town bit.</span></p>
<p>Q: Favourite restaurant in or around Joburg for lunch with friends?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: Odd Cafe!!!! Greenside.</span></p>
<p>Q: Three places in Joburg that are a must visit for all tourists?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: Openroom Studios in Greenside, <a href="http://www.safindit.co.za/the-bohemian/" target="_blank">The Bo in Auckland Park</a> and Bottega in Parkhurst.</span></p>
<p>Q: If you could live anywhere else in SA, where would it be?<br />
<span style="color: #800000;">A: Cape Town!</span></p>

So in one setting, I may be introduced as Bevan the Musician; Bevan the Brand Manager; Bevan the occasional cyclist and triathlete; Bevan the MC, radio and television presenter.</span></span></strong></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I love spending time crafting and making something from nothing. <p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Open plan, rustic feel softened with antique finds from travels around South Africa with a touch of modern – not too much though. If I could settle in the <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/0_property_for_sale/3_Western_Cape.htm" target="_blank">Western Cape</a> – that would be great!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><em>This question was proudly sponsored by <strong><a href="http://privateproperty.co.za" target="_blank">Private Property</a> </strong>- Looking for something different? <p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Marketing in South Africa</strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><strong>Q: </strong><span style="color: #888888;"><span style="color: #000000;">You are currently brand manager at Natures Choice Products responsible for both the individual house brands and the companies corporate branding. How did you first get into marketing and what is it about your job that you find most rewarding?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>It is actually an interesting story. I joined <a href="http://www.unilever.co.za/" target="_blank">Unilever</a> in 2006 straight from Rhodes University with a degree in General Psychology and Accounting. I started out in HR and after 13 months, I asked to move to marketing. Unilever accommodated my request and then learnt the ropes on great brands: Glen Tea, Joko Tea, Lipton Tea and Skip and Sunlight Washing powder. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Looking for a different experience, I then moved to Nature’s Choice Products and it has been an absolute privilege blazing new trails for the brands at Nature’s Choice products. The brands are new, so all the communication is new, and to be a part of the embryonic development of any brand in any market is truly a once in a life time experience. Check out <a href="http://www.naturesgarden.co.za" target="_blank">www.naturesgarden.co.za</a> to see what we have done so far…</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>What advice would you offer those wanting a career in marketing?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Give it horns. Don’t accept industry norms when it comes to marketing ‘best practice’. Be controversial (or at least try to be original) – it helps when trying to cut through the clutter!</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Today&#8217;s typical marketing campaign includes buzz words such as guerilla marketing, social media, Twitter, Facebook etc. What are your thoughts on how the industry is changing and do you feel that South African companies are keeping up with international trends?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> This is a great question. There are a host of buzz words and new media available to companies that can be used as touch points to engage consumers and potential consumers and some brands are utilizing this network very effectively. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> However, I think that in a country like ours where the first world and third world live relatively harmoniously side-by-side, marketers must not forget the tried and tested methods that have made their brands so profitable. So what the social media networks are providing are opportunities to create even more integrated brand communication – which just makes the marketers job that much more interesting. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> So yes, I do think SA is keeping up with international trends.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Besides your career in marketing, you are also a voice artist, MC and radio and television presenter. Which of these do you enjoy the most and are there any other disciplines that would like to add to your CV?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> I enjoy being an MC as well and doing work for television (corporate) – when I get the chance. I enjoy the people interaction and capturing their emotion and character when engaging people. In addition to this, thinking on my feet is quite a thrill. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> In terms of adding disciplines to the CV – I can sing and play the guitar. I was a relatively successful ensemble at University and have recently got together a band of musicians. We have recorded one track already and are in the process of writing more songs, developing a solid repertoire and great sound. Music is very important to me and creating it is very truly awesome.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> What can we look forward to from Bevan Lynch in 2010 and beyond?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Music from the band, more MC work, Television work and working towards completing an <a href="http://ironman.com/" target="_blank">IronMan</a> event – starting with the Half Iron man in my home town, East London in January next year.</span></span></strong></span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you were tasked with spending a portion of the Lotto revenues on improving South Africa, where would you start?</span></span></span></p>

<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in Durban</strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> What do you most enjoy about living in Durban?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Everything. People, Berg, Beach, Weather, Sport, Art, Music and its size. It is not too big and not too small – just right!</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong> </strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Q:</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> Favorite venue for a fun outing with a group of friends in or around Durban?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Berg – definitely. Although, going to a beach side resort any time of year is great – but I think the berg wins, especially in winter – with a glass of warm <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulled_wine" target="_blank">glühwein</a> next to a fire.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you were asked to produce a television spot advertising South Africa to visitors of the World Cup, which locations in or around Durban would you select as backdrops?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Berg – have I said that already ;); Beach; Bush and yes, the stadium.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>General</strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could invite any three South African personalities to a poker game, who would you invite and what snacks would you serve?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Darren Scott, <a href="http://www.markshuttleworth.com/" target="_blank">Mark </a><a href="http://www.markshuttleworth.com/" target="_blank">Shuttleworth</a> and Allan Gray (not a personality, but still would like to meet him). I would serve Japanese Rice Crackers, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crudit%C3%A9s" target="_blank">Crudités</a> and Hummus.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Which book would make required reading for all school-leavers and which book would you say has influenced you the most?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://www.loot.co.za/shop/main.jsp?page=detail&amp;id=7225572082928&amp;referrer=85884849355" target="_blank">Angela’s Ashes</a> by Frank McCourt – story of determination and rising above. Seriously made my worries seem very small – and it is a great read.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Given a free hour at home, which would you rather do, put your feet up and relax or look for something productive to do?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Do something productive – I am always fixing something, coming up with a new business/creative ideas, writing a song, creating something, crafting – sitting and watching a movie from start to finish with my girlfriend is a rarity – I fidget too much!</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could go back in time and give your eighteen-year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">Don’t take yourself so seriously. Seriously!</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://www.allangray.co.za/" target="_blank">Allan Gray</a> – I would ask about the story of Allan Gray and its development over time. He is an East London gentlemen, like myself ;)</span></span></span></span></p>
<p>We&#8217;d like to thank Bevan for taking the time to answer our questions and wish him every success for the future.</p>

<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Paul was kind enough to answer the following questions:</span></p>
<p><span id="more-1366"></span><strong>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q: </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;">The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.</span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I suppose a friend would introduce me as the oldest &#8230; hardest working TV producer in the country! LOL! I have a bit of a reputation of being able to make things happen, and to be honest I am proud of it! I have been in TV for so long my personnel number at MNET was &#8230; 12!!!</span></span></strong></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I am terrified of heights! But really, like can&#8217;t even walk over a bridge without sweat pouring down, and some totally uncool trembling!</span></span></strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"> </span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">Beaches! I am a beach freak. My wife and I lived for a while in Seychelles and we spent almost everyday on a beach. I miss it terribly here in Johannesburg. I also enjoy quiet weekends away in the Magaliesburg. Quite often my wife and I pop off to a little pet friendly self catering place we know, cause our little mutt Chutney is a huge part of our family! She has to go too! (thank goodness she also loves beaches!)</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> How would you describe your dream home and where in South African would you like it to be?</span></span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:<span style="font-weight: normal;"> I know you&#8217;re gonna think this is real kitch &#8230;. but the dream home is a little simple place, down on the &#8230; Beach! Got to be around the <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/0_property_for_sale/1_KwaZulu_Natal/4_KZN_South_Coast/all_sales.htm" target="_blank">South Coast</a> somewhere cause I love it down there. <h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>South African Radio and Television</strong></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><strong>Q: </strong><span style="color: #888888;"><span style="color: #000000;">You have worked for a number of South Africa&#8217;s biggest radio stations including Springbok Radio, Radio 702, 5FM and East Coast Radio. What are some of your fondest memories from the early years of South African radio and what would you say has been the greatest innovation in radio since you first started?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Radio years ago was the best. It had a magic to it, that we just don&#8217;t have now. Everything is so serious! I really enjoyed my early days at 702. We broadcast from the mountain in Garankua and it was like a 2 hour drive to get to the studios, but we had a pool up there, a lapa and we braaied over weekends WHILE doing our shows and had huge parties. It was such fun (I don&#8217;t think as much fun for the listeners as it was for us though!). </span></span></strong></span><span style="color: #0000ff;">In those early days there were no egos, we were all friends, having fun. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">5FM was incredible too. I did news on Alex&#8217;s show, and even though we chatted and had fun every morning he was in Cape Town and Ian F, John Walland and I were in Jhb! It was chaos every morning, all morning! </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> I think the greatest innovation in radio is the computer! In my days, the early ones, we had things called records &#8230; Which got stuck &#8230;. And 8 track carts &#8230; Which needed rewinding before you could use them &#8230;. and &#8230;. got stuck! Many times we would put on a song like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeRa3RtBiIU" target="_blank">&#8220;Radar love&#8221; by Golden Earring</a>, cause it was so long, and would rush off to the loo, coming back to hear to the record stuck, playing the same riff over and over and over.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Besides being a radio DJ, you are also well-known as television director, producer and voice artist. Which of these do you enjoy the most and are there any other disciplines that would like to add to your CV?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Web designer! Love it! So creative, I do it for fun, I don&#8217;t have any clients or anything, but I do run my own company websites, and do all the design and programming and updating myself. Nothing fantastic mind you, but I do have fun doing it! </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Of all the disciplines I have done over the year I love being a DJ the most. I miss it, until just recently I did a show for OFM in the Free state but it didn&#8217;t work out, and I left. So &#8230;. If you&#8217;re looking for someone who knows their stuff&#8230;</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Which South African radio and television personalities do you admire the most and what advice would you offer those starting out in the industry?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> May I say the older personalities? <a href="http://www.izimvo.com/john-berks" target="_blank">John Berks</a>, Clark McKay, David Gresham, and the sharpest of them all <a href="http://twitter.com/702JohnRobbie" target="_blank">John Robbie</a>. I admire them cause they didn&#8217;t just walk into a studio and try build audiences through the sound of their own voices, they actually worked on their shows, prepared links, and the golden rule, if they had nothing to say &#8230; they didn&#8217;t! </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Today&#8217;s personalities talk and talk and talk, sometimes just too much! I think if you are starting out in the industry, take time to learn where the industry comes from, how it works, listen to some great broadcasters from around the world (easy with streaming these days) and see what real broadcasters do! Take tips from the guys that have been around, they&#8217;ve been around for a reason! </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">May I say though there is one &#8220;newer&#8221; local personality that I really enjoy on radio and TV &#8230; <a href="http://twitter.com/pabimoloi" target="_blank">Pabi Moloi</a>. I think she&#8217;s got an awesome future ahead of her, and would love to see more like her!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> What are your thoughts on the current state of the SABC and do you feel that enough is being done to promote locally produced content?</span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Shocking, terrible, and sad. The SABC has let us all down, producers, actors, financiers, and the public. They do nowhere near enough to promote local content, they don&#8217;t go out of their way to grow the industry, I mean just look, DSTV has the VUKA awards which is an incubator run by <a href="http://www.bigfish.org.za/" target="_blank">Big Fish school of digital filmmaking</a>, and it&#8217;s free for students, they have awards, they screen the products that the students make, they really try, and encourage youngsters who are the future of this media, but the SABC don&#8217;t, and they could, and should!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Do you feel that podcasting will ever become a threat to local radio?</span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> No. Not for a long time. Local radio is big because of traffic jams and the fact that the largest demographic listening, don&#8217;t have access to internet! Radio is a major form of communication in SA. I think it&#8217;s going to stay that way for a long time. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> I think where podcasting could play a role though is in keeping the archives of radio and making them available for the worked to hear. For example some of the old Springbok radio shows are available on podcast, as are some of the old Capital shows, and every now and then it&#8217;s good to go back and remember, and learn from what those that came before us have done. They set great examples for us to follow. You know, the funny thing about radio, is that NOTHING is new, it&#8217;s ALL been done before, just in a different way, by a different person! Podcasting won&#8217;t change it, neither will any other technology in a hurry!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> What can we look forward to from Paul Freathly in 2010 and beyond?</span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:</span></strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"> As I get older, I just want to live a quieter life, BUT having said that I am dying to pass on all this knowledge I have, in radio and TV, so hopefully you won&#8217;t hear much from me, but will hear from people who are learning from me, changing my ideas and thoughts to creatively blend into today&#8217;s mainstream media, on TV and radio all over SA.</span></span></span></p>
<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></span></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?</span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Oh yes. We live in a prison, we don&#8217;t reverse out our driveway, and we lock everything all the time. I honestly believe we live in constant fear. My wife and daughter were held up at gunpoint and I was gassed while sleeping and cleaned out, so we&#8217;ve been there, and don&#8217;t want to go there again! I think South Africa is in trouble, and I think the government need to wake up, and react, before our gorgeous country becomes another Zimbabwe.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you were tasked with spending a portion of the Lotto revenues on improving South Africa, what would your first project be?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Health care. I ended up in the Jhb gen about a year ago, in intensive care. I got better, just so I could get out of there! It was frightening! When I went to have a MRI scan done, having to walk down the stairs to that floor cause the lifts were broken, I was told I couldn&#8217;t have the scan because the computer had been stolen! I feel so sad for people who are ending up there because they have no alternatives. We need to care of our people, they make us great.</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> With less than 30 days to the first African Soccer World Cup, what advice would you offer to first-time visitors looking to sample the best in South African cuisine?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I think it would have to be &#8230;. BILTONG! As a hobby I make my own biltong at home, I could eat biltong from breakfast lunch and dinner if I got the chance, preferably on pizza! Lol. SA has some wonderful dishes to offer, but also some that just aren&#8217;t going to be all that well accepted by foreigners! I am not mad about our local food, I love boerewors, biltong and all those Durban curries! And let&#8217;s face it, there&#8217;s nothing like a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunny_chow" target="_blank">Bunny Chow</a>!</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> If you could wave your magic wand and change one thing about South Africa, what would it be?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Crime. It&#8217;s going to ruin our country!</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in Johannesburg</strong></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> What do you most enjoy about living in Johannesburg?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The sea! &#8230;. Hang on, am I dreaming again? To be honest I am not mad about Johannesburg, it&#8217;s not my city of choice, rather a case of living where the work is!</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong> </strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Q:</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> Favorite destination for an outing with a group of friends in or around Johannesburg?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I am a real homebody, love being at home, with the family, relaxing, but if I do go out, it&#8217;s more often than not just to the Brightwater commons! It&#8217;s become such a cosmopolitan place over the past few years and I love strolling around, watching people, eating prawns. I am not one of those &#8220;got to be seen at every event&#8221; kinda people, in fact I would rather not! I am these days even taking my name off the TV shows I work on, and instead giving my protégés a chance to get recognized for what they do. I feel I have been there and done it, and got the wet T-shirt. Now it&#8217;s someone else&#8217;s turn, and I want to help.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you were tasked with commissioning a 2010 World Cup poster depicting the beauty of Johannesburg, what images would you select?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Wow difficult question. Suppose you don&#8217;t want pictures of taxis, potholes or traffic jams do you? To me Johannesburg has an early morning beauty, as the sun rises, over the city, the early morning fog starts to lift, the hawkers come out and set up their little stalls, the warming fires get lit, the traffic starts to move, people start heading off to work &#8230; that&#8217;s the real Johannesburg. The reality of day-to-day life in the city for so many.</span></span></span></p>
<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">General</span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could invite any three South African radio and television personalities to a poker game, who would you invite and what snacks would you serve?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I would invite John Robbie, Pabi Moloi and <a href="http://www.michaeldepinna.co.za/" target="_blank">Michael de Pinna</a>. John would play according to the rules, he will have prepared, studied the experts, and be ready to go all out to win. Pabi would play for fun, frivolously, in a lighthearted style, adding glamour to the event, and would probably win! Michael would pretend he knew how to play, and would fake all the moves, losing &#8230;. to me! As for snacks &#8230; I would be clever, and hold the evening at <a href="http://www.obraseiro.co.za/" target="_blank">O Braseiro</a>, the Portugese restaurant, so they could worry about that!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Which book would make required reading for all school-leavers and which book would you say has influenced you the most?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I wish there was a book called &#8220;Believe your Dad, he&#8217;s been there before&#8221;. Written by me, but there isn&#8217;t, so I would suggest that each individual find that one book themselves, that lifts them up, inspires them and drives them to be more than they are. It has to be a different book for everyone, otherwise we would all be the same person.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Given a free hour at home, which would you rather do, put your feet up and relax or look for something productive to do?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>A free hour? What&#8217;s that? The couch &#8230;. Feet up, relaxing, hopefully watching something good on TV, if not, maybe just dozing!</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> What advice would most like to give the 18-year-old you?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">Make the most of everything while you are young enough to be able to! You get old damn fast, and once you&#8217;re old, there&#8217;s no going back! You want to &#8230;. it&#8217;s just that you can&#8217;t!</span></span></strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"> </span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I would love to see some of the SABC&#8217;s commissioning editors on here. They are the people who make all the decisions at the moment with regards to our national broadcaster, let&#8217;s find out more about them, who they are, why they make the decisions they make, who they think the SABC broadcasts to, those sort of things, hey another question we could ask them is, what qualifications they have for the job! If you can&#8217;t get one of them, you might want to ask young Kamza Bako a question or two, he&#8217;s the presenter of Treasure Hunt on SABC 2, also a roving reporter on Talk SA, an ex radio 2000 presenter and 5 fm presenter, and he&#8217;s only like 24, he&#8217;s gonna go far! Love his work.</span></span></span></span></p>
<p>We&#8217;d like to thank Paul for taking the time to answer our questions and wish him every success for the future.</p>

<p>Rian, wanting to be a lawyer and start his own political party, replied to an ad looking for campus radio DJs while studying law at Tuks. The rest, as they say, is history.</p>
<p>Today, Rian is the host of OFM’s afternoon drive show and Kyknet’s talk show, Rian. He also writes lyrics for a sitcom, performs Afrikaans stand-up and is studying towards an honours degree in Psychology.</p>

<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Rian was kind enough to answer the following questions:</span></p>
<p><span id="more-1297"></span><strong>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q: </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;">How would you like to be introduced at a social event?</span></strong></span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I suffer from a fair amount of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsessive%E2%80%93compulsive_disorder" target="_blank">OCD</a>!</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">Walking on an isolated beach.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">As close to the ocean as possible, a large stoep and a fireplace inside. Somewhere in the <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/0_property_for_sale/3_Western_Cape.htm" target="_blank">Western Cape</a>, most likely West Coast with a lively bar within walking distance.</span></span></strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><em>This question was proudly sponsored by <strong><a href="http://privateproperty.co.za" target="_blank">Private Property</a> </strong>- Looking to open your own guest house on the West Coast? <h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>South African Talk Shows</strong></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><strong>Q: </strong><span style="color: #888888;"><span style="color: #000000;">Your are the host of the popular Rian, your self-entitled talk show on KykNet. How did the show first come about and how would you describe the show to someone who has not seen it?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Well, my producer Ronnie Watt and I used to work on a show called Voorblad that focused on the stranger individuals of our society. Voorblad came to a logical end and we thought it would be a good idea to spend an entire show with only one guest…a South African icon. We realized that viewers wanted to know more about their hero’s and so the show was born.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>How much preparation goes into each episode and how do you go about selecting your guests?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>A lot of preparation goes into each episode. I try to go back at least 15 years in the life of my guest when I prepare for an interview. We have a list of guests we would like to talk to and depending on availability we work our way down the list. We try to speak to icons from all walks of life i.e. actors, musicians, politicians, comedians, sport stars etc.</span></span></strong></span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you were to start your own radio station, which South African radio personalities would you hire to do the morning and afternoon drive shows and why?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I would keep <a href="http://twitter.com/garethcliff" target="_blank">Gareth Cliff</a> in the morning (but force him to create more parodies with the huge array of voices he can do!) Afternoon drive probably <a href="http://www.111kau.com/" target="_blank">David Kau</a>…damn we need to laugh more!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> What are your predictions for the future of South African radio?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I think personality radio will finally return to our airwaves. <p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could give the eighteen-year-old-you a single piece of advice, what would it be?</span></span></span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo and what would you like to ask them?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://www.davidkramer.co.za/" target="_blank">David Kramer</a>. Always a legend. I would love to know how we can create more of the stuff he used to create. How do we keep a local flavor in our music especially in Afrikaans?</span></span></span></span></p>
<p>We&#8217;d like to thank Rian for taking the time to answer our questions and wish him every success for the future. Be sure to watch Rian on Kyknet every Sunday at 6pm or listen to his afternoon drive show on OFM every weekday starting at 3pm.</p>

<p>Today&#8217;s familiar voice belongs to the host of ECR&#8217;s Big Breakfast: Peter G.</p>
<p>From humble beginnings as a house party DJ to starting an inhouse hospital radio station, Peter G has become a firm favorite on Durban&#8217;s airwaves since taking over as the host of ECR&#8217;s Big Breakfast in September last year.</p>
<p>Born and raised in Durban, Peter G has a true understanding of Durban culture and speaks the language of listeners around the east coast. He has rallied fans from every corner of the province with his tongue-in-cheek quirky take on current matters and a pleasant, fun and all-encompassing disposition.</p>

<p>Peter was kind enough to answer the following questions:</p>
<p><strong><span id="more-1204"></span>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>This is Peter G, you may have heard him on East Coast Radio&#8217;s Big Breakfast Show. He&#8217;s 39 years old and two kids and loves pasta!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I tend to share quite a bit &#8211; my biggest fear is heights. I remember during a stay in Kimberley the &#8220;tannie&#8221; next door asked me to fix her tv aerial on her roof. I said sure, it&#8217;ll be a pleasure&#8230; until I started climbing onto her roof. Seems I&#8217;m even scared from 3 metres up!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I love slipping off to the berg. We are so lucky living in KZN that we&#8217;re able to jump in the car and after a relatively short drive find ourselves in one of the most beautiful places in the country. Slipping off to Cape Town is another favourite escape for me</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>How would you describe your dream home and where in South Africa would you like it to be?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Oh boy, my dream home&#8230;? I remember dreaming of how I&#8217;d like my home to be when I was a youngster. I never really gave the number of bedrooms much thought but always wanted somewhere for my music. I&#8217;d love a home overlooking the sea in the <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/search/listresults.asp?franchiseid=58&amp;area=&amp;province=1&amp;abbr=&amp;suburb=47&amp;listtype=1" target="_blank">Ballito</a> area. Perhaps once I&#8217;ve decided on how many bedrooms I need I&#8217;ll think of moving out that way.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #000000;"><em>This question was proudly sponsored by <strong><a href="http://privateproperty.co.za" target="_blank">Private Property.</a> &#8211; </strong>Looking for your dream holiday home on the Dolphin Coast? How about this 4 bedroom R12.7m <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/1_property_for_sale/1_KwaZulu_Natal/58_Dolphin_Coast/47_ballito_house_for_sale_J26777.htm" target="_blank">executive home</a> with uninterrupted sea views from everywhere in the house.</em></span></p>
<p><strong>Radio in South Africa</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>You first started your radio career by launching an inhouse Radio station while working in PR at the Department of Health. Can you tell us more about how that came about and how you eventually became the breakfast show host on East Coast Radio?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I started deejaying at parties in around 1984 &#8211; a long time ago and reached a stage where I guess I felt the time had come to take the next step. For me radio had always been a dream I wanted to pursue. As a teenager I had set up my own small radio station in my bedroom &#8211; it had a listenership of 1. </span><span style="color: #0000ff;">In the early days of Radio Port Natal I went on a tour of the SABC building and that pretty much sealed the deal for me &#8211; I wanted to be in radio.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">After years in the Department of Health I realised that one way of boosting staff morale at the time was to start our own inhouse radio. Fortunately for me the Medical Superintendent of the hospital saw the potential and my step into radio began. Almost a year later I was approached by the management of Kimberley Hospital to set up their inhouse radio station. We moved to Kimberley for 6 months before returning to Durban. A fortunate meeting with a member of the management team at uShaka Marine World led to my proposing an inhouse radio station to the park. uShaka Radio operated for 3 years. Sadly the park closed it down. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">It was during my time as Station Manager at uShaka Radio that a friend asked me for my demo as he felt I should be at East Coast Radio. He submitted the demo on my behalf and my time at Durban&#8217;s Number 1 began with the 3am to 6am early morning slot. After almost 4 years at the station I was offered the Breakfast Show when it was announced that Daryl Ilbury would be leaving.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What is the essential ingredient to a successful radio Breakfast show? Can you give us an insight into how a show&#8217;s success is measured?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The shows success, as with radio in general, is measured by the number of listeners. In my opinion a great Breakfast Show needs to be something that listeners can relate to. I aim to take people to work with a smile on their face. The entire team pulls out all the stops to provide a show that is relevant to the community, fun, energetic and informative.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you were start your own national radio station, who would you approach to host your afternoon drive show?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>You mean poach? Hahaha&#8230; <a href="http://www.djfresh.com" target="_blank">DJ Fresh</a>&#8230; because Just Plain Darren would be doing Breakfast!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What advice would you give those wanting a career in radio?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Get a real job! Getting into radio is not an easy &#8220;knock on the door and host your own show&#8221; process. My advice would be to volunteer at community stations. It&#8217;s when you&#8217;ve worked with limited resources you truly appreciate your radio career as it develops. Those early days in community radio will help to keep you grounded. You also have the opportunity to make mistakes without being slaughtered by your listeners hahaha. As you improve, if you&#8217;re really good, you&#8217;ll be noticed by other stations.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What are your thoughts on podcasting and do you think it will ever become a threat to local radio?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> CD&#8217;s are a threat to local radio. Music downloads, the internet, ipods, even TV is a threat to local radio. The one thing these platforms don&#8217;t offer is live interaction with a human being. We all like to interact, either in normal conversation or through social networks. It&#8217;s part of what makes us human. We realise this and are making the necessary changes to develop our offering and attractiveness.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Yes people close to me have been affected by crime but it hasn&#8217;t changed my perception of our country. Yes crime is a very real issue that threatens everyone of us everyday but we as a country have been through many dark and challenging times and come out on the other side shining and proud. Crime is crime. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Communities still haven&#8217;t realised that standing together against crime is the only way to deal with it. As South Africans we tend to hide away and not get involved. Community Policing Forums are crying out all the time for community support &#8211; we all need to do our share. Leaving it to others is not the answer.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I did many years ago, purely because all my friends where moving to Australia. Some of them are back now.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>With a little over two months to the first African Soccer World Cup, what advice would you offer to first-time visitors looking for the ultimate South African experience?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>We don&#8217;t have lions and wild animals on our main roads so don&#8217;t walk the streets with your big camera hunting for them. You DO have to get in a car and drive to a game farm or reserve to find them but the trip WILL be worthwhile!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>South Africa&#8217;s greatest entertainer is?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Only one? That&#8217;s not a fair question.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in Durban</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy most about living in Durban?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The climate and people. Once a Durbanite always a Durbanite.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Favorite restaurant in or around Durban for a romantic night out?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://www.food24.com/Content/Restaurants-and-Bars/Restaurants/3422/d8b0e12464024a6db7b9a3e45dc8efa6/16-10-2009-03-31/La_Casa_Nostra" target="_blank">La Casa Nostra</a> in Umdloti.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Favorite local destination for a long weekend getaway?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The Berg.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Which event on Durban&#8217;s social calendar is your personal favorite?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I have no particular favorite.</span></p>
<p><strong>General</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you could magically send an email to yourself at the age of 18, what advice would you include?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Don&#8217;t wait. Go for what you want now. Time flies!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Which book would you make required reading for all matric pupils?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Everything written by <a href="http://www.loot.co.za/shop/main.jsp?offset=0&amp;page=search&amp;cat=qb&amp;terms=Richard+Branson&amp;x=18&amp;y=15&amp;referrer=85884849355" target="_blank">Richard Branson</a>.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you had to pick one South African as a mentor, who would it be and why?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I learnt alot from <a href="http://www.darylilbury.com" target="_blank">Daryl Ilbury</a>.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo and what would you ask them?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://twitter.com/simmiareff" target="_blank">Simmi Areff</a> &#8211; local comedian (and comedy content producer for the breakfast show) &#8211; my question: how do you deal with a crowd that just doesn&#8217;t find you funny?</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">We&#8217;d like to thank Peter for taking the time to answer our questions and wish him every success for the future. Be sure to <a href="http://www.ecr.co.za/kagiso/content/en/east-coast-radio/east-coast-radio-listen" target="_blank">tune in</a> and catch Peter G on ECR&#8217;s Big Breakfast every weekday from 6am &#8211; 9am. </span></p>

<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Mel was kind enough to answer the following questions:</span></p>
<p><span id="more-1143"></span><strong>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q: </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;">How would you like to be introduced at a social event?</span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">Radio &amp; Television Broadcaster.</span></span></strong></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I&#8217;ve had the same car since 1999. I just don&#8217;t see the value in replacing cars often. When this one breaks, I&#8217;ll get a new one. (However if someone wants to give me a brand new car, I will not say no)</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I love going away to little boutique hotels all over South Africa. As long as it has a spa, great room service, good wine and beautiful scenery &#8211; I&#8217;m happy.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> How would you describe your dream home and where in South African would you want it to be?</span></span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:<span style="font-weight: normal;"> Thats exactly it &#8211; I want my house to feel homely, not look like its straight out of an uptight decor magazine. It would have to have a huge verandah with a view for sundowners, a large garden for picnics and kids and a home cinema wouldn&#8217;t hurt. I&#8217;m a big city girl and in Johannesburg I think <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/search/suburbsearch.asp?suburb=Northcliff" target="_blank">Northcliff</a> is the best kept secret &#8211; on a clear day you can see forever!</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><em>This question was proudly sponsored by <strong><a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za" target="_blank">Private Property</a> &#8211; </strong>Looking for the perfect home in Johannesburg? <p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Talk Shows in South Africa</strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><strong>Q: </strong><span style="color: #888888;"><span style="color: #000000;">Congratulations on the success of your new talk show Lets chat&#8230; with Mel. Tell us about how the show came about and what it is like being in-front of the camera again?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>MNet Series put out a commissioning brief for the talk show and <a href="http://www.cmproductions.co.za/" target="_blank">Clive Morris Productions</a> approached me to attach my name to their proposal. After an initial discussion to see whether we were on the same page in terms of ideas and content, CMP put my name forward. A while later, we heard that the pitch was successful. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">It was not as strange as I thought it would be to be back in front of the camera after almost 8 years since my last TV gig. There is an ease and comfort, for me, in being back in front of the camera.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>You are personally involved in selecting the topics for the show. Just how much preparation goes into each episode and how do you go about selecting your guests?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>There is a lot of preparation involved. The production team starts off deciding on a theme or topic for the show, then we brainstorm around what are the stories we want to tell or the message we want to send. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Once the tone has been set, the search starts for suitable guests, that are interested on being TV, available on the day of the shoot and will work on camera. Sometimes you might have a guest who is very knowledgeable on a subject but who just doesn&#8217;t work on camera due to nerves, etc. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Once the guests have been selected, in-depth pre-interviews are done with each guest by the research team to get to the crux of what it is we want to talk about. From that interview, a &#8220;final&#8221; list of questions is prepared by myself for the actual in-studio or on location shoot.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Selecting the perfect question is a science. Where do you draw inspiration for your questions from and is there anything you will not ask in an interview?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> <span style="color: #0000ff;">This is a good question :) As mentioned, that&#8217;s why pre-interviews are so important. A pre-interview might be a half hour or even an hour and from that information, we&#8217;re able to pick out the pertinent or relevant questions to ask. On the show, the longest segment we have is about 9-10 minutes which isn&#8217;t very long at all. I always say: You should never ask a question, you don&#8217;t already know the answer to. Be prepared. Know where you want to go with the interview. </span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">It&#8217;s a fine line when it comes to asking something that might be awkward for the interviewee but on the show we&#8217;re not into confrontation or surprising guests &#8211; that&#8217;s best left to Jerry Springer! LOL</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> The show is advertised as for woman by woman. What are the greatest challenges facing South African woman today and what are some of the things that you and your producers are doing to reach the average South African woman?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Whew! Where do we start? I think South African women across the board are concerned by the state of our education system for our children, our safety for our selves and our loved ones, our advancement in the work place while balancing the needs of the home, and when you start to get niche &#8211; women in the townships face issues of lack of delivery of essential services, grandmothers are taking care of grandchildren due to the terrible effects of HIV and AIDS, rural women are still ruled by a patriarchal system, young women are trying to figure out a balance between what culture dictates and demands while finding their own way in a modern world. Let&#8217;s not even get into race. </span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">This has been the challenge in doing the show &#8211; there are many things/issues that separate us but we believe that there are just as many commonalities for women, regardless of color, status, etc and that&#8217;s what we try to focus on.</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Which other South African interviewers have most inspired you?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> I&#8217;m a 70&#8242;s baby and I grew up with television. I think over the years there are a number of interviewers across both television and radio that I learn from. <a href="http://www.702.co.za/shows/johnr.asp" target="_blank">John Robbie</a>, <a href="http://www.metrofm.co.za/djs/robert-marawa" target="_blank">Robert Marawa</a>, <a href="http://www.feliciainc.com/" target="_blank">Felicia Mabuza Suttle</a>, Dali Tambo, Tim Modise, <a href="http://www.702.co.za/shows/redi.asp" target="_blank">Redi Direko</a> and more.</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong> </strong></span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<div id="attachment_1148" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 210px"><a href="http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4732337&amp;id=242863295568"><img class="size-full wp-image-1148" title="Behide the scenes" src="http://www.izimvo.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/mel1.jpg" alt="Behide the scenes" width="200" height="255" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Behide the scenes</p></div>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Can you give us a little insight into the making of the show? When do you tape, how many crew members work on the show and how is the success of the show measured?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> The making of a television program is in essence a 3-part process. </span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">The first is pre-production: This is all the preparation that goes into deciding what happens in a particular show/s. Over and above this, things like the set, logo, logo music, props, etc is all done at this stage, as well as securing crew to work on the show. </span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Second is production: This is the actual day you record. We record on a Saturday and call time is usually 7am for hair, make-up and rehearsals. Guests start arriving at about 09h00 and we&#8217;re ready to record by 09h30. The crew is about 10 people. It&#8217;s an all day affair! The saying in television is: Hurry up and Wait! Just as you&#8217;re ready, the batteries might die on your microphone. When that&#8217;s sorted, a light could blow. When that&#8217;s sorted, there could be a problem with playing back material. There&#8217;s always something so you have to be patient. </span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Thirdly, post-production: Once you&#8217;ve recorded the material, it then goes into editing and after that, final sound mixing, then you hand over the tape to the broadcaster.</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> What do you enjoy most about living in South Africa?</span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The weather. I complain like a fishwife in winter but I know we&#8217;re lucky to not have snow and extreme cold. In fact, with the extreme weather conditions or natural disasters that&#8217;s been going on in the world since the beginning of the year, Haiti, Chile, Japan, etc &#8211; we&#8217;re blessed. Maybe the movie &#8220;2012&#8243; was onto something?</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you were to interview president Jacob Zuma, what would your last question be?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>You said one-term right?</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> Which South African personality would you most like to interview and why?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnie_Madikizela-Mandela" target="_blank">Winnie Madikizela-Mandela</a> but she&#8217;d deny it took place ;-) Seriously though, she is a fascinating woman who doesn&#8217;t speak to the media very often yet has an incredible story to tell.</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> With less than 100 days to the first African Soccer World Cup, what advice would you offer to first-time visitors looking for the ultimate South African experience?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Find a local and strike up a conversation, we&#8217;re very friendly. Only in South Africa can you meet someone in the morning and be invited to their place that same evening for a braai. Let us show you our country, first hand.</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p><strong>General</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> You hosted the popular Studio Mix for over 7 years. What are some of your fondest memories from your time on the show?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>We hosted really great concerts back-in-the-day. We went to Nelspruit, Cape Town and the Rand Show here in Johannesburg with the hottest music acts of the time and there were no less than 15 000 people at each event! Mind blowing now that I think about it. And then of course, it&#8217;s been very interesting to witness artists that came onto the show then as &#8216;brand new&#8217;; grow and develop over the years into these huge brands, and of course there are some that didn&#8217;t.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Having working both on radio and on TV, which of the two do you prefer?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Both have their merits. Radio has a spontaneity and instantaneous re-action that is awesome. You can get that from television but only on a live broadcast. Television because it&#8217;s a visual medium, offers you the opportunity to have layers of stuff happening at the same time &#8211; it should be a feast for the eyes.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could invite any three South Africans to an intimate dinner party, who would you invite and what would you serve for dessert?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>First choice? My closest girlfriends. We&#8217;ve been friends for almost two decades and there is a level of comfort and sisterhood that cannot be replaced or duplicated. We&#8217;ve seen kids grow up and go to varsity, helped each other through the minor loss of boyfriends, the major loss of parents and also been very silly together. Dessert would be Jack Daniels &#8211; ha ha!</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">Q: <span style="font-weight: normal;">&#8220;Stop being so shy&#8221;. I was terribly shy and still am to a degree but I&#8217;m getting better.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo and what would you ask them?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://www.emasa.co.za/node/41" target="_blank">Professor Jonathan Jansen</a>, Rector &#8211; University of the Free State. Doesn&#8217;t he want to be our Minister of Basic Education?</span></span></span></span></p>

There is the &#8220;intellectual&#8221; bunch who understands and agrees with my notion of &#8220;fame&#8221; in South Africa &#8211; the notion that unless your name is Nelson Mandela you&#8217;re really not a South African celebrity so a simple introduction using my first name would suffice. Then there&#8217;s the hooligan bunch of friends who will shout from across the room &#8220;Hey this is Rob Vember from 5FM&#8221;!</span></span></strong></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</span></p>

<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Radio in South Africa</strong></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><strong>Q: </strong><span style="color: #888888;"><span style="color: #000000;">You first started your radio career at Heart 104.9 FM in Cape Town. What were the most important lessons that you learnt while working for a regional radio station?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Regional Stations generally have the upper hand on National Stations as they have the ability to &#8220;own&#8221; that region more so than a national station would. A regional station really has the opportunity to get real close and personal to its market so its important that you as a DJ get to know that market as well as possible! </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">At a national level you need to be careful not to fall into the trap of making one region your point of reference, it often does happen naturally broadcasting from Joburg that Joburg becomes your focal point be it with something as simple as the weather, someone in Cape Town really doesn’t give a damn that Joburg’s weather is crappy or vice versa. But certainly on a regional level you need to immerse yourself in the culture/s of that region.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>You are part of the 5FM playlist committee. How do you personally go about making selections?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>It&#8217;s often a difficult task because you need to think beyond your personal taste and consider what the core market would want to hear. At the end of the day pop music is fairly formulaic and we generally do get it right! And this often means putting your personal taste aside. If it was up to me you’d never hear the likes of Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber or The Jonas Brothers on air!</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> South Africa has a rich history when it comes to radio and radio personalities. If you were to establish a South African Radio Hall of Fame, who would be your first inductee?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Unfortunately a lot of the really good ones have really big egos so I’m going to refrain from boosting anyone’s ego even further.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you were to start your own radio station, who would you contact for your morning and afternoon drive shows?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> LOL I’d claim breakfast, I believe any DJ who lives, eats, breathes and sleeps the medium aspires to host a breakfast show so I’d be crazy to own my own station and not have a go at breakfast. As for afternoons, I think one of the great on air losses albeit from talk radio in recent years is <a href="http://www.702.co.za/profiles.asp?id=102" target="_blank">Tom London</a>. I think he’s great and believe he would be a hit on a music format as well!</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> What advice would you give those wanting a career in radio?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> There is no easy answer to this much asked question in my opinion. It really is a tough industry to get into. My route in was remarkably quick and easy but I see on a daily basis how people struggle to get in. The best I believe you can do is to be prepared to start at the bottom, put in the hard graft at your campus or community station and make noise on that level where inevitably you have more freedom to do so. Use that platform to get noticed on a commercial level. It’s all hard work and it should be!</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> What are your thoughts on </span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcast" target="_blank"><span style="color: #000000;">podcasting</span></a><span style="color: #000000;"> and do you think it will ever become a threat local radio?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: I think podcasting is fantastic. I get my weekly dose of The Chris Moyles Show (BBC Radio1), Jonathon Ross (BBC Radio2) etc via <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/" target="_blank">podcasts</a>. I don’t believe it should be viewed in opposition to the medium of radio but we should use it where possible to boost our respective on air brands and be seen as an extension to the brand. It’s the perfect opportunity much like a blog for example for one’s show to live outside of its live on air slot. Also in the South African context, internet penetration is minimal in comparison to other first world markets so podcasts are still a long way off from being a threat to radio… certainly until broadband in South Africa becomes much cheaper and much more accessible.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Unfortunately the answer is &#8220;yes of course&#8221; I have been affected by crime many a time. Most noticeably a few years ago myself and two mates were held-up at gunpoint in a Spur early on a Sunday evening. Four gunmen took their time going from table to table taking what they could from patrons. </span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">One has to however remain positive and if necessary see the funny side in things like in this instance, the smoking section was left untouched (at this point all smokers are smiling and thinking &#8220;see it has its benefits&#8221;) and shockingly after being robbed of our cash we were still made to pay for our meals by using our debit cards! Life goes on, it always will. I refuse to be held captive mentally in my own country.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>How would you rate the performance of the current government since the last general elections and what areas would you like them to improve upon?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Eish… Where to start? It is really difficult to see through all the bickering and politicking what progress is actually being made. Certainly with its installation the current administration made all the right noises but I guess they all do around election time don’t they. </span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">However this government seems to be plagued by one distraction after the other. If it&#8217;s not Zuma’s sex life, its Malema’s party life and so it seems to continue. I just wish they’d all just get on with business and deliver on their promises. </span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Of course we continue to see progress and the necessary changes regarding HIV/Aids which is great and much more of the same is needed but where else is the government actually progressing? </span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I am a cynic by nature but I would also not hesitate to point out government’s positives. I would like nothing more than for Zuma to prove me wrong, and I’ll continue to wait for that day.</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> What are the must-see attractions for visitors to the Soccer World Cup?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I think the usual <a href="http://www.robben-island.org.za/" target="_blank">Robben Island</a> trip and safari game drives are great and are probably considered standard for any visitor but there’s no better way to experience South Africa than by a road trip up the Garden route. I’ve travelled the route countless times and it never ceases to amaze me. Leaving the Cape over Sir Lowry’s Pass and heading all the way up into the rural Eastern Cape. Phenomenal!</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> South Africa&#8217;s greatest export is?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Corny but true… Nelson Mandela, made in SA for the world to treasure!</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in Johannesburg and Cape Town</strong></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> You travel between Cape Town &amp; Johannesburg on a weekly basis, how do you find the traveling between the 2 cities?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Not quite on a weekly basis but yes I have become all too familiar with OR Tambo and Cape Town International. I generally get the earliest possible flight out of Joburg on a Friday so that I get a full day of Cape Town in and back on the first flight on a Sunday to be in time for the Top 40. It&#8217;s both tiring and stressful. If the return flight is delayed by anything more than 20 minutes then I miss the Sunday show so it&#8217;s always a gamble really. I hate flying though. Only because it&#8217;s so damn uncomfortable. Being my size is no fun when stuck in economy. Not to mention of course the generally shocking service delivered by most of our local airlines.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong> </strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Q:</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> Where is your favorite weekend hangout in or around Cape Town?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Having been in Johannesburg for 2 years now, whenever I’m back in Cape Town I can’t seem to get enough of the iconic city center and the surrounds. I guess it just confirms the fact that I’m home!</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Q:</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> If you were tasked with commissioning a postal stamp depicting the beauty of Cape Town and it&#8217;s people, which image would you select?</span></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> It really is a tough one, simply because of the diversity of people that Cape Town has but being 2010 it would have to be an aerial shot of the new Cape Town football stadium filled with Capetonians with Table Mountain as the backdrop and the Sea Point shoreline in the foreground. It doesn’t get any better than that!</span></p>
<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">General</span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could invite any three of today&#8217;s current radio personalities to dinner, who would you invite and what would you serve for dessert?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I’m guessing you meant local but since you didn’t specify I’ll take liberties… <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chrismoyles/" target="_blank">Chris Moyles</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Stern" target="_blank">Howard Stern</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Seacrest" target="_blank">Ryan Seacrest</a>. My grandmother’s &#8220;lekker finger pudding&#8221;, you ain’t tasted anything like it!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Which book would you make required reading for all matric pupils?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I think for starters we need to teach them how to read!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you had to pick one South African as a mentor, who would it be and why?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Once again Nelson Mandela comes to mind but he would be the first to point out that he’s only human. So there’s not necessarily one person who I’d select as a mentor but I tend to live and learn by studying other people and learn from the best and worst that they have to offer.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Where would you like to wake up tomorrow?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Bedroom" target="_blank">The Lincoln Bedroom</a>.</span></span></strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"> </span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo and what would you ask them?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Once again assuming you meant local but I’ll take liberties on the question… <a href="http://kimkardashian.celebuzz.com/" target="_blank">Kim Kardashian</a>. What wouldn’t I ask her should be the question. :)</span></span></span></span></p>

<p>Today&#8217;s familiar voice belongs to South African radio legend: John Berks.</p>
<p>John started his radio career in 1964 when he was employed as a disc jockey on <a href="http://www.lmradio.org/" target="_blank">LM Radio</a>. He moved onto a couple of other radio stations including Swazi Music Radio, <a href="http://www.5fm.co.za">Radio 5</a> and Capital before starting at <a href="http://www.702.co.za">Radio 702</a> in 1981.  John soon became the most popular voice on South African radio.</p>
<p>John was known for his fantastic sense of humour while he hosted the morning show on 702, until he retired from the station in the late 90&#8242;s. John is still very much in demand as a public speaker and currently lives in Johannesburg.</p>

<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">John was kind enough to answer the following questions:</span></p>
<p><strong><span id="more-1068"></span>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q: </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;">If you were asked to give a talk at a local school, How would you like the principle to introduce you?</span></strong></span></p>

<p>Izimvo has the honour of introducing 94.7&#8242;s Brad Brown.</p>
<p>Brad, a familiar voice on Johannesburg&#8217;s 94.7 Highveld Stereo, is a great example of determination. After an unsuccessful Hot Jock audition in late 2002, Brad got right back into the massive audition lines and tried again. Second time round Brad made it through the preliminary judging and went on to book his place in the final. Although he did not win, Brad used the opportunity to push for an audition show which he finally got in 2003.</p>
<p>As well as Radio DJ on 94.7, Brad is also an accomplished voice over artist, club DJ and successful entrepreneur with interests in three companies.</p>

Location: Johannesburg</p>
<p>Brad was kind enough to answer the following questions:</p>
<p><strong><span id="more-954"></span>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I’m not really big on huge social events but my best mate would introduce me as Brad, 33, entrepreneur, radio jock and proper South African bloke.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I have secret ambitions of being the front man of a rock band! Seriously, I got into radio because at the time I got an opportunity to get into the entertainment industry and I thought it would be a way to get to my goal. Thirteen years later I’m still on radio and don’t have a band.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I love the bush. I really don’t get to go often enough. I also enjoy a round of golf to put things into perspective. With my golf game you realise things can’t get much worse that that!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>How would you describe your dream home and where in South Africa would you like it to be?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Ideally it would be in the middle of a<a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/0_property_for_sale/7_Limpopo_Province/40_Limpopo_Province/all_sales.htm" target="_blank"> game reserve</a>. Nothing to big, but comfortable, all open plan with huge full length glass sliding doors so that it can open up the entire house. If I could run my businesses from the Kruger Park I’d move out there tomorrow.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><em><span style="color: #000000;">This question was proudly sponsored by <strong><a href="http://privateproperty.co.za" target="_blank">Private Property</a></strong></span></em></span></p>
<p><strong>Radio in South Africa</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong> You first stated your radio career at RAU Radio where you hosted various shows and eventually becoming head DJ. What were the most important lessons you learnt while working for the student radio station?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The few years I spent on RAU Radio (Now UJFM) were probably the best foundation I could’ve ever hoped for in my radio career. We had a phenomenal group of on and off air talent. Many of them have gone on to successful careers. I learnt two big lessons on campus radio. The first was to find someone you could learn from take their advice to keep getting better. As soon as you think you’re good enough you stop growing. The second was to believe in yourself. I learnt quickly that if you don’t back yourself no one will. Those two lessons haven’t only helped me in my radio career; they’ve been invaluable in my businesses too.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong> Your 94.7 Highveld Stereo &#8220;lucky break&#8221; included a failed attempt at their &#8220;Hot Jock&#8221; Idols like competition. What made you come back again and was there ever a stage where you thought it was not to be?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I had sent demo tapes through to Highveld for a couple years with absolutely no luck. I’m the proud owner of a whole bunch of standardised rejection letters. By the time Hot Jocks came around in 2002 I had been on campus, community and retail radio consistently for about 4 years. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I remember standing in that line waiting to audition like it was yesterday. My nerves just got the better of me at the first audition and I blew it. I knew that I was better than that and I decided to get back into the line and try again and ended up winning that regional round and made it through to the final week of the competition. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Although I didn’t win it was a foot in the door at the station and I bugged them until they gave me an audition. I was determined to work for Highveld and the thought never crossed my mind to stop trying.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong> What do you enjoy the most about working at 94.7 Highveld Stereo?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I think it has to be the people. Our line up has some serious superstars on it and I am extremely proud to be part of the same team as the likes of Jeremy Mansfield, Alex Jay and <a href="http://izimvo.com/mark-pilgrim" target="_blank">Mark Pilgrim</a>. I am often dumbstruck in that building when I realise that I am on the same line up as those legends.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong> South Africa has a rich history when it comes to radio and radio personalities. If you were to establish a South African Radio Hall of Fame, who would be your first inductee?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=732236840" target="_blank">Alex Jay</a>. He is without a doubt the most genuine, down to earth bloke I have ever met. If anyone in the radio industry could afford to have a big head it would be Alex but there isn’t even the hint of an ego with that man. He is so humble it’s amazing.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong> What advice would you give those wanting a career in radio?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Get used to rejection and never give up. There are nowhere near enough radio stations in South Africa so the amount of on air time slots are very limited. Keep sending demos and bug programming managers until they give you a shot. But also make sure that you are 100 percent prepared when the opportunity presents itself. You might only get one shot.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What are your thoughts on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcast" target="_blank">podcasting</a> and do you think it will ever become a threat local radio?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I’m in two minds whether podcasts are going to be a threat to radio in South Africa or not. I do think that digital music platforms are however already a threat to local radio. We live in a world of instant gratification and the internet and technology is making it easier and easier to get what we want when we want it.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong> Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>We have but fortunately nothing to serious. It is probably the thing that scares me most about the future of South Africa. I think we have a real problem that needs to get dealt with urgently. I also think there needs to be an adjustment in the way average South Africans think about crime for the situation to get better. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">The way I see it is if everyone just took care of what they were doing the authorities would be able to deal with the bigger issues. Having a police officer pull you over for speaking on your cell phone is preventing him from perhaps apprehending a more serious offender. I’m not sure if that make sense. By breaking the law yourself you are contributing to the bigger problem. In my mind shoplifting is the same as robbing a supermarket with a firearm, they are both theft. Granted one is more serious that the other but both are still a crime. What are you teaching your kids by breaking the law, like speaking on your phone while driving? You’re teaching them that it is ok to break the law as long as you don’t get caught and that is not ok in my book. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">What really grates my carrot is when people write letters to my local paper bitching about how the metro police hide in the bushes with their speed guns catching people speeding. There is a simple solution to that problem. Don’t speed. If you take care of the little things the big things will take care of themselves. It is up to us as individuals to take care of the little things.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I have thought about it but I do not want to emigrate. After matric I took a gap year (by gap year I mean 3 years) and travelled quite a bit. I lived and worked in the US and the UK and enjoyed living in both but I realised I am South African and this is where I belong.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong> What are the must-see attractions for visitors to the Soccer World Cup?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>This country is so vast with so much to see it is difficult to narrow it down. I think time in the bush is a must for any visitor to SA.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong> South Africa&#8217;s greatest export is?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The England cricket team.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in Johannesburg</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>If, at the flick of your fingers, you could change anything about life in Johannesburg. What would you change?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>If we could have Cape Towns beauty this would be the best city in the world to live in.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>As a father, what is your families favorite kid friendly restaurant and what would you recommend on their menu?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>We love <a href="http://www.what2night.co.za/restaurants/restaurant/301/" target="_blank">Papachinos</a> in Crowthorne. Their pizzas are really good and it’s a great place for the kids. They get to make their own pizzas and they have a really cool area for them to play in with child-minders to keep an eye on them.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you were tasked with commissioning a postal stamp depicting the beauty of Johannesburg and it&#8217;s people, which image would you select?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I think the Joburg skyline at sunrise. There is something beautiful about watching the sun rise over the Brixton tower and Ponty on a clear Highveld morning.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>You are currently training for the <a href="http://www.comrades.com/" target="_blank">2010 Comrades marathon</a>. What are your favorite training routes in or around Johannesburg?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>There are so many. I really enjoy the tree-lined streets in the Ranburg area, especially when the Jacarandas are flowering. There is also a hilly little suburb close to where I stay called Noordkruin that has some of the most spectacular views of Joburg.</span></p>
<p><strong>General</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>As a father, radio DJ, voice over artist, emcee and a successful entrepreneur with interests in 3 businesses. Where do you find the time for everything? Do you have any time management secrets that you can share with our readers?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I think proper planning is the key. I schedule everything from my runs to my son’s sports games. That way nothing gets forgotten and I manage to work everything in that is important and needs to get done.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Public speaking is rated as one of the most feared activities. What do you enjoy most about it and how did you overcome the natural fear? What is the biggest crowd you&#8217;ve MC&#8217;d to?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I still get nervous when I need to be on stage in front of a lot of people but I’ve learnt to deal with it. I think it just boils down to doing it enough so that you become comfortable with doing it. It’s the old cliché that practice makes perfect. I’ve emceed a few big concerts probably around 12 000 people. But when your eyes are as bad as mine you only see the first few rows of the audience.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Which book would you make required reading for all matric pupils?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The <a href="http://www.loot.co.za/shop/main.jsp?page=detail&amp;id=1367071082928&amp;referrer=85884849355" target="_blank">Magic of Thinking Big</a> by David Schwartz.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you had to pick one South African as a mentor, who would it be and why?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Madiba. I think he is an amazing man. To go through what he went through and not harbor any hatred is unbelievable. I think we owe much of what we have in South Africa today to him.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo and what would you ask them?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I am sport mad, anyone sporty would be good. I would love to ask <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Fordyce" target="_blank">Bruce Fordyce</a> if he thinks he would have been as successful as he was and won 9 consecutive marathons if he was at his peak now in 2010.</span></p>
