<p>Izimvo has the pleasure of introducing marketer, voice Artist, MC and radio and television presenter; Bevan Lynch.</p>
<p>Born in the Eastern Cape, Bevan has always been in the limelight with him playing in jazz bands, singing in choirs and acting in theatrical productions from an early age. While completing a BCOM at Rhodes University, Bevan went on to form his own band and record an album which has received numerous accolades and continues to be aired on DSTV&#8217;s channel MK.</p>
<p>Bevan&#8217;s marketing career highlights include working on some of South Africa&#8217;s most loved brands including JOKO, Glen and Lipton Tea as well as Sunlight and Skip laundry powder. Today Bevan is the Brand Manager for Natures Choice Products recently launching a new brand, Natures Garden, into the South African market place.</p>
<p>Bevan has also recently joined East Coast Radio as a late night DJ.</p>

</a>Location: Durban</p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Bevan was kind enough to answer the following questions:</span></p>
<p><span id="more-1428"></span><strong>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q: </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;">The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.</span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">It depends on the setting – I love meeting new people and networking. So in one setting, I may be introduced as Bevan the Musician; Bevan the Brand Manager; Bevan the occasional cyclist and triathlete; Bevan the MC, radio and television presenter.</span></span></strong></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I love spending time crafting and making something from nothing. It sounds weird, but I love finding a use for junk! The end product is unique and in most cases did not cost much at all! So I scour Hospice stores and second-hand stores to find bargains.</span></span></strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"> </span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">Cycling, Running and swimming all relax me – sounds weird but On the road or in the pool, I make sense of the world. The silence helps me unpack all the thoughts in my head.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> How would you describe your dream home and where in South African would you like it to be?</span></span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Open plan, rustic feel softened with antique finds from travels around South Africa with a touch of modern – not too much though. If I could settle in the <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/0_property_for_sale/3_Western_Cape.htm" target="_blank">Western Cape</a> – that would be great!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><em>This question was proudly sponsored by <strong><a href="http://privateproperty.co.za" target="_blank">Private Property</a> </strong>- Looking for something different? How about this <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/1_property_for_sale/3_Western_Cape/35_Milnerton,_Tableview_and_Blaauwberg/96_atlantic_beach_golf_estate_house_for_sale_J37879.htm" target="_blank">R5.5m, 5 bedroom Atlantic Beach Golf Estate</a> home boasting 3 lounges and a TV room.</em></span></span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Marketing in South Africa</strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><strong>Q: </strong><span style="color: #888888;"><span style="color: #000000;">You are currently brand manager at Natures Choice Products responsible for both the individual house brands and the companies corporate branding. How did you first get into marketing and what is it about your job that you find most rewarding?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>It is actually an interesting story. I joined <a href="http://www.unilever.co.za/" target="_blank">Unilever</a> in 2006 straight from Rhodes University with a degree in General Psychology and Accounting. I started out in HR and after 13 months, I asked to move to marketing. Unilever accommodated my request and then learnt the ropes on great brands: Glen Tea, Joko Tea, Lipton Tea and Skip and Sunlight Washing powder. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Looking for a different experience, I then moved to Nature’s Choice Products and it has been an absolute privilege blazing new trails for the brands at Nature’s Choice products. The brands are new, so all the communication is new, and to be a part of the embryonic development of any brand in any market is truly a once in a life time experience. Check out <a href="http://www.naturesgarden.co.za" target="_blank">www.naturesgarden.co.za</a> to see what we have done so far…</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>What advice would you offer those wanting a career in marketing?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Give it horns. Don’t accept industry norms when it comes to marketing ‘best practice’. Be controversial (or at least try to be original) – it helps when trying to cut through the clutter!</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Today&#8217;s typical marketing campaign includes buzz words such as guerilla marketing, social media, Twitter, Facebook etc. What are your thoughts on how the industry is changing and do you feel that South African companies are keeping up with international trends?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> This is a great question. There are a host of buzz words and new media available to companies that can be used as touch points to engage consumers and potential consumers and some brands are utilizing this network very effectively. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> However, I think that in a country like ours where the first world and third world live relatively harmoniously side-by-side, marketers must not forget the tried and tested methods that have made their brands so profitable. So what the social media networks are providing are opportunities to create even more integrated brand communication – which just makes the marketers job that much more interesting. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> So yes, I do think SA is keeping up with international trends.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Besides your career in marketing, you are also a voice artist, MC and radio and television presenter. Which of these do you enjoy the most and are there any other disciplines that would like to add to your CV?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> I enjoy being an MC as well and doing work for television (corporate) – when I get the chance. I enjoy the people interaction and capturing their emotion and character when engaging people. In addition to this, thinking on my feet is quite a thrill. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> In terms of adding disciplines to the CV – I can sing and play the guitar. I was a relatively successful ensemble at University and have recently got together a band of musicians. We have recorded one track already and are in the process of writing more songs, developing a solid repertoire and great sound. Music is very important to me and creating it is very truly awesome.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> What can we look forward to from Bevan Lynch in 2010 and beyond?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Music from the band, more MC work, Television work and working towards completing an <a href="http://ironman.com/" target="_blank">IronMan</a> event – starting with the Half Iron man in my home town, East London in January next year.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?</span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Yes. It has affected my perception of South Africa absolutely. It has only made me and those close to me more cautious every day.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you were tasked with spending a portion of the Lotto revenues on improving South Africa, where would you start?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Education. Absolutely.</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> With less than 20 days to the first African Soccer World Cup, which local brands would you say are a must buy for international visitors looking to sample the best South Africa has to offer?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Music, Music and Music. And <a href="http://www.tigerbrands.co.za/Brands/DomesticFood/SnacksTreats/blackcat/Information.htm" target="_blank">Black Cat peanut butter</a> – I have it every other day on my sandwiches to work!</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> If you were to award the prize for the best marketing campaign of the year, which South African companies would make your short list?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>

<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in Durban</strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> What do you most enjoy about living in Durban?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Everything. People, Berg, Beach, Weather, Sport, Art, Music and its size. It is not too big and not too small – just right!</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong> </strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Q:</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> Favorite venue for a fun outing with a group of friends in or around Durban?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Berg – definitely. Although, going to a beach side resort any time of year is great – but I think the berg wins, especially in winter – with a glass of warm <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulled_wine" target="_blank">glühwein</a> next to a fire.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you were asked to produce a television spot advertising South Africa to visitors of the World Cup, which locations in or around Durban would you select as backdrops?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Berg – have I said that already ;); Beach; Bush and yes, the stadium.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>General</strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could invite any three South African personalities to a poker game, who would you invite and what snacks would you serve?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Darren Scott, <a href="http://www.markshuttleworth.com/" target="_blank">Mark </a><a href="http://www.markshuttleworth.com/" target="_blank">Shuttleworth</a> and Allan Gray (not a personality, but still would like to meet him). I would serve Japanese Rice Crackers, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crudit%C3%A9s" target="_blank">Crudités</a> and Hummus.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Which book would make required reading for all school-leavers and which book would you say has influenced you the most?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://www.loot.co.za/shop/main.jsp?page=detail&amp;id=7225572082928&amp;referrer=85884849355" target="_blank">Angela’s Ashes</a> by Frank McCourt – story of determination and rising above. Seriously made my worries seem very small – and it is a great read.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Given a free hour at home, which would you rather do, put your feet up and relax or look for something productive to do?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Do something productive – I am always fixing something, coming up with a new business/creative ideas, writing a song, creating something, crafting – sitting and watching a movie from start to finish with my girlfriend is a rarity – I fidget too much!</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you could go back in time and give your eighteen-year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">Don’t take yourself so seriously. Seriously!</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://www.allangray.co.za/" target="_blank">Allan Gray</a> – I would ask about the story of Allan Gray and its development over time. He is an East London gentlemen, like myself ;)</span></span></span></span></p>
<p>We&#8217;d like to thank Bevan for taking the time to answer our questions and wish him every success for the future.</p>

<p>Izimvo has the great pleasure of introducing marketing maven: Walter Pike.</p>
<p>With more than 30 years of experience in branding, marketing and advertising, Walter is an international thought leader on social media and digital marketing.  Walter&#8217;s  impressive Résumé includes being the former Head of Faculty: Marketing and Advertising, at the <a href="http://www.aaaschool.co.za/" target="_blank">AAA School of Advertising</a>, the founder of the Digital Marketing Academy, the first in the world to be accredited by Google and a member of the international chief marketing officers council advisory committee, as well as being the founder of PiKE | The New Marketing Agency.</p>
<p>Website: <a href="http://www.pike.co.za" target="_blank">http://www.pike.co.za<br />
</a>Blog: <a href="http://walterpike.com" target="_blank">http://walterpike.com</a><br />
Twitter: <a href="http://" target="_blank">http://twitter.com/walterpike<br />
</a>LinkedIn: <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/walterpike" target="_blank">http://www.linkedin.com/in/walterpike</a></p>
<p>Walter was kind enough to answer the following questions:</p>
<p><strong><span id="more-1136"></span>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event?  i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Walter is the owner and founder of PiKE a new kind of marketing/advertising agency &#8211; especially geared to operate in the new always on always connected world. (a new marketing agency in fact). The founder and owner of the Digital Academy, teaching new marketing and digital marketing. A happily single father of three stunning children. His mind is always active and is in demand as a speaker in conferences and corporate events, and has a weekly segment on Classic FM&#8217;s &#8220;the internet economy&#8221; and a frequent guest on international podcasts, radio and TV. If there is a commercial that has been built to summarise Walter&#8217;s attitude it is Apple <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oAB83Z1ydE" target="_blank">Think Different</a> Oh how old is Walter? that&#8217;s a difficult question, he thinks that he is going to live forever.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> I suppose that not many people know that I started off as a farmer, was a very keen Polo player and bred and raced a racehorse who won me a couple of races.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Ha ha. I have been very bad at getting away from it all. I love flyfishing because it&#8217;s very active and can be intellectual &#8211; but in a totally different way to what I do all day. It a way of connecting into a different world, I like fishing clear mountain streams</span>.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> How would you describe your dream home and where in South Africa would you like it to be?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Thats an amazingly difficult question as I need to balance both quiet time with connection with the buzz of the city. When I want the quiet I want it really quiet, very far from the crowds my favourite town is Rhodes (near Barclay East) but when I am in work mode &#8211; it must be <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/search/suburbsearch.asp?suburb=johannesburg" target="_blank">Johannesburg</a>, our unbeatable weather and energy is just what I want. What kind of house? comfortable nicely decorated and a place to leave.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #000000;"><em>This question was proudly sponsored by <strong><a href="http://privateproperty.co.za" target="_blank">Private Property</a><span style="font-weight: normal;"> &#8211; looking for the ultimate home on northern Johannesburg? <p><strong>Education &amp; Digital Marketing  in South Africa</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>In your experience, have you found that our tertiary education system is keeping up with the rapid changes of technology?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Not even close. I have just left a position as Head of Faculty in a tertiary institution and I can tell you that without doubt.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Do you feel that South African corporates catching onto Social Media &amp; the web in general?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> It is still very early in the adoption curve. We have moved from total ignorance to a position now that people are interested &#8211; but really don&#8217;t know much, but at least the awareness is there. They will catch on big time very soon.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> What are your thoughts on the local early adopter market? Are you finding that consumers are becoming more sophisticated in the choices they are making?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Interesting that you should ask that, I did a whole show on the <a href="http://www.classicfm.co.za/talk/the-internet-economy" target="_blank">Internet Economy</a> talking about that very point. There is a segment in the market who are very quick in catching on and taking advantage of the market, in this space South African&#8217;s are truly world leaders. But &#8211; it&#8217;s a small group and the rest of the market are miles behind. Fantastic example was when Marc and I were sitting in Ballito and getting updates on Foursquare from exactly the same people.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Maybe more interesting is that in this space the corporates are behind the customers, for example very few are taking advantage of how the lower LSM&#8217;s are adopting cell phone technology, the marketing departments just don&#8217;t understand what is happening.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us more about the Digital Marketing Academy you started in 2009, and how the course is structured and what accreditation you can receive from the courses you offer?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> The idea was that I felt that there needed to be a place where people could learn about Digital Marketing because i expect that when the market explodes its going to be really difficult to find the skills.  So far we have only one course which is an overview strategy course, but it&#8217;s really comprehensive and we cover 22 topics from search engine optimisation to games and social media. During this year we will also be rolling out intensive courses in some of the topics. Google Adwords, Social Media, SEO etc. The Digital Strategy Course is given in conjunction with the AAA School of Advertising and is soon to be incorporated into the degree so is at NQF level 6 (degree level), graduates get an official AAA qualification.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I am aiming the academy at corporates, the ad agency sector and marketing departments. Interestingly many of the people on the course are people already involved in digital business.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Which international web trends do you believe will shape the future of the web here in South Africa?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The adoption of the mobile internet is moving at a pace 8 times that of the &#8220;desktop&#8221; based internet at the same stage of its development. This will impact countries like South Africa even more than first world countries. the other think that we must keep in mind is that the new bandwidth coming in will change pricing and accessibility.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">At the upper levels, smart phone use will similarly change the way people do business &#8211; and the big thing will be location based services. I also see augmented reality being a huge thing in the not too distant future.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What can we look forward to from the academy in 2010?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>A series of new specialised courses and in-house training programs covering the entire digital marketing space. These will include 1/2 day seminars on specific topics.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Your other business PiKE &#8211; whats it all about:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I don&#8217;t believe that most people realise that online is not just another media channel. This is because the connections that are the internet have changed the way society operates and the fact that it provides a platform for people to publish have changed the way people find out stuff and how they buy things. The world changed &#8211; so marketing should change. I call this new marketing and it&#8217;s what we do.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Notice that it&#8217;s not digital, nor advertising, nor interactive its how to use all these tools to deliver marketing results in an always on, always connected world. We can deliver a television campaign for example &#8211; but in a different way. We are also very skilled in social media marketing.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I<strong> </strong>had a car stolen a year or two back. But to be honest I refuse to be restricted by fear, I am not reckless but in the same vein I live my live as I want.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Not sure actually &#8211; maybe Europe?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What are your thoughts on the fiber optic cables such as Seacom and the impact they will have on Southern Africa?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>They are going to have a massive impact &#8211; huge. Broadband connectivity is a significant driver of growth the real issue is the last mile &#8211; how do we get everyone connected, and there are some hugely innovative projects going out around this.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>With less than 100 days to the first African Soccer World Cup, what advice would you offer to first-time visitors looking for the ultimate South African experience?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Look past all the stereotypes and engage with real people in read places.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in Johannesburg</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you most enjoy about living in Johannesburg?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The pace, and the incredible weather. Also the fact that almost everyone I want to talk to is here.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Favorite restaurant for a lazy Sunday afternoon lunch?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://www.what2night.co.za/restaurants/restaurant/301/" target="_blank">Papachinos in Midrand</a>.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you were tasked with commissioning a postal stamp depicting the beauty of Johannesburg and it&#8217;s people, which image would you select?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Johannesburg is the biggest urban forest in the world &#8211; Trees and bird life.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you had to pick a getaway less than 2 hours from Johannesburg, where would it be?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> The Vaal is one of the most interesting and productive rivers anywhere &#8211; somewhere below the barrage &#8211; say Potch &#8211; amazingly enough!</span></p>
<p><strong>General</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>One book that you would make required reading for all matric pupils?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Is there really a single book? At the moment Linchpin by <a href="http://www.sethgodin.com/sg/" target="_blank">Seth Godin</a> or Crush It by <a href="http://garyvaynerchuk.com/" target="_blank">Gary Vaynerchuk</a>.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Once piece of advice you would most like to give the 18-year-old you?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Listen to everyones advice &#8211; but don&#8217;t take it &#8211; do what gives you a rush. Every single one of my best decisions have been made with my heart. Embrace failure &#8211; the only people who have never failed are those who have never tried!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> What was the last movie you saw on the big screen?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Avatar.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">We&#8217;d like to thank Walter for taking the time to answer our questions and wish him every success for the future. </span></p>

</a>Location: Johannesburg</p>
<p><strong><span id="more-1005"></span>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? I.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Please welcome Yvonne Johnston, 51 years old, Marketer-at-Large, well known communication strategist, ardent patriot, chef extroadinaire, wine connoisseur and loyal and faithful friend. Creative in everything she does, her latest venture is to develop a curtain décor and beaded chandelier business, just to keep her busy between midnight and 2 a.m.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong></span><span style="color: #0000ff;">I am terrified of heights – can&#8217;t even stand on a chair to change a light bulb, but have always believed that you hire people to do the things you aren’t good at! So I hire bulb changers, gardeners, car mechanics, painters and admin clerks.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:</span> </strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">Reading. I always have several books on the go at the same time, usually a novel, a business book and a self improvement or spiritual book. I love to do things that are peaceful – fishing, gentle canoeing ( I am not very sporty) puzzles, beading, playing Bridge and Backgammon. Always busy!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>How would you describe your dream home and where in South African would you like it to be?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:</span> </strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">I think I live in my dream home or should I say homes. I have a truly African house that resembles a game lodge in Johannesburg. A simple house filled with beautiful pieces from Morocco, Kenya, Ghana, Namibia. And then I have a peaceful retreat overlooking a dam and the Magaliesberg mountains at <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/search/listresults.asp?franchiseid=60&amp;area=&amp;province=8&amp;abbr=&amp;suburb=528&amp;listtype=1" target="_blank">Hartebeespoort Dam</a>. I don’t think I wish for anything else really.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><em><span style="color: #000000;">This question was proudly sponsored by <strong><a href="http://privateproperty.co.za" target="_blank">Private Property</a></strong></span></em></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What book//books are on your bedside table right now?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong></span><span style="color: #0000ff;">Deon Meyer: <a href="http://www.loot.co.za/shop/main.jsp?page=detail&amp;id=6307641082928&amp;referrer=85884849355" target="_blank">Dead at Daybreak</a>, Martha Beck: <a href="http://www.loot.co.za/shop/main.jsp?page=detail&amp;id=156408082928&amp;referrer=85884849355" target="_blank">Steering by Starlight</a> and Vijay Mahajan: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Africa-Rising-Million-African-Consumers/dp/0132339420" target="_blank">Africa Rising</a></span></p>
<p><strong>Branding South Africa</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-1010" style="margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; border: 1px solid black;" title="Yvonne-Johnston-Madiba" src="http://www.izimvo.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Yvonne-Johnston-Madiba.jpg" alt="" width="211" height="166" />Q: </strong>Your background is Marketing and Communications, but you put Brand South Africa on the Map with the Alive with Possibility Campaign. Can you tell us briefly how you went about developing that campaign.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong></span><span style="color: #0000ff;">With lots of help! <a href="http://www.unilever.co.za/" target="_blank">Unilever</a> provided the branding methodology and some resources. Then we interviewed 25000 people – tourists, investors and every sector of SA society. We developed general themes which were then researched and distilled into the three magic words “Alive With Possibility”</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Then we developed Domestic and International Strategies to align and hopefully inspire South Africans, and to change International perceptions.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">We also developed all of the channels and tools – the official web site, booklets filled with great SA facts etc</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>You’re not with Brand South Africa (International Marketing Council) anymore so we have to ask you – can you diski dance? Do you have a flag, a vuvuzela and a football short and do you know the words to the National Anthem?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:</span> </strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">I can&#8217;t diski dance – think you have to play soccer to be able to do that! I do have a flag and a vuvuzela, football kit and OF COURSE I know the words of the national anthem. I have known them for nearly 16 years.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong></span><span style="color: #0000ff;">We have not, apart for minor opportunistic events. And if I was, I hope that it would not make me question my patriotism.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">It is about the behaviour of a few individuals, now whole swathes of society. I truly believe that if we engage more with our communities and are more welcoming, entrench good values, then crime will become a thing of the past. High walls don’t stop anything!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:</span> </strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">I could live anywhere, but would not choose to live outside of Africa. I do however, love France and would love to have a French retreat.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Is there one factor or element that you think can unite South Africans and why?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong></span><span style="color: #0000ff;">A common goal, a common vision, a common enemy. If we were all fighting for the same thing, we would be invincible.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you had the opportunity to sit down with President Zuma, what advice would you offer him?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:</span> </strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">1. Demonstrate leadership through your behaviour PLEASE!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">2. Be aware that every time you open your mouth you either build or destroy the image of the country.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">3. Provide the people with a compelling, stretching, vision that they can support, buy into and that would unite them in one direction.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>To which three attractions would you first take an international visitor?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:</span> </strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">1. The top of Table Mountain</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">2. <a href="http://www.apartheidmuseum.org/" target="_blank">The Apartheid Museum</a></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">3. <a href="http://www.sabisabi.com/" target="_blank">Sabi Sabi</a></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">4. The Constitutional Court</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">5. Origins Museum</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>South Africa’s greatest export is?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong></span><span style="color: #0000ff;">South Africans who do their country proud by being best of breed.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>South African Music – favourite group/s; vocalists.</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Do you buy South African Art and Crafts? Who?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong></span><span style="color: #0000ff;">Lots! Various. I have some amazing <a href="http://www.midlandsreservations.co.za/john-sithole.html" target="_blank">John Sithole</a> carved fish, beautiful Venda pots…my favourite artist is <a href="http://www.danielnovela.co.za" target="_blank">Daniel Novela</a> who paints exquisite landscapes with great African skies.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in Johannesburg</strong></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you most enjoy about living in Johannesburg?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong></span><span style="color: #0000ff;">The people, the access to entertainment, the energy, the hospitality, the integration, the diversity, the modern ness (is there such a word?) The innovation and desire to win.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Who makes the best breakfast in Johannesburg?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong></span><span style="color: #0000ff;">The Saxon and the Grace…oh, and <a href="http://www.tashas.co.za/" target="_blank">Tashas</a></span></p>

<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Anna was kind enough to answer the following questions for us:</span></p>
<p><strong><span id="more-600"></span>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q: </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;">The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.</span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">Well, it all largely depends on who that friend is, friends that I’ve grown up with generally introduce me as Anna or Annaling. I’ve been known to be introduced as the Russian and Ling too. I’ve managed to accumulate a number of nicknames mostly highly suited for short, blonde girls.</span></span></strong></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">In a nutshell, Hi, My name is Anna and I’m clutching on-to the last few days of being 26 and I am Russian. Wait, Estonian, no Russian. Actually I am more South African…</span></span></strong></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I’ve attended 7 different schools on two bi-polar continents. I’ve worked as a professional interpreter to earn money at Varsity and used to interpret mining lectures for Russian engineers at Wits and participate in underground coal mining trips. I’m partial to chocolate. I have to smell everything which means I end up with food or whatever else it was I was smelling on the tip of my nose, usually unbeknown to me.</span></span></strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"> </span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A: <span style="font-weight: normal;">I have more energy than what I know to do with, so anything outdoors, preferably near water makes me incredibly happy. If I can get out-of-town, a weekend at the coast or in the bush will do wonders for your energy and soul. If it’s just an afternoon in the city I will have to bundle up Boris-the-Magnificent (<a href="http://www.twitpic.com/mplc7" target="_blank">http://www.twitpic.com/mplc7 </a>) and head off to Emmarentia for a long stroll.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #333399;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> How would you describe your dream home and where in South Africa would you want it to be?</span></span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> </span><span style="color: #0000ff;">As a future property mogul, the first of my two main homes will have to be on the <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/0_property_for_sale/3_Western_Cape/34_Cape_Town_City_Bowl_and_Atlantic_Seaboard/all_sales.htm" target="_blank">Atlantic Seaboard</a> between Bantry and Camps Bay, the type with a 180 degree view of the pink Cape Sunset and the ocean, floor to ceiling glass windows and heavy wood or aluminium settings. I want to be able to have friends around and be surrounded by the mountains and the fresh breeze from the ocean. </span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">My second ‘main’ home would be on the <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/1_property_for_sale/2_Gauteng/16_Rosebank_and_Parktown_Central/residential_sales_in_Parktown-Westcliff_287.htm" target="_blank">Westcliff</a> hill, with a view of the Jacarandas stretching over the Johannesburg horizon and the rolling hills with the CBDs popping out amongst the trees. </span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">My other holiday homes would include: Knysna (with a view of the <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/1_property_for_sale/3_Western_Cape/52_Garden_Route/residential_sales_in_Knysna-Sedgefield_644.htm" target="_blank">Knysna</a> heads), Mozambique border and <a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za/0_property_for_sale/7_Limpopo_Province.htm" target="_blank">Limpopo</a> so I can be close to the Giraffes. The lions can protect me there.</span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><em><span style="color: #808080;">This question was proudly sponsored by <strong><a href="http://www.privateproperty.co.za" target="_blank">Private Property</a></strong>.</span></em></span></span></p>
<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Digital Entertainment in South Africa</strong></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><strong>Q: </strong><span style="color: #888888;"><span style="color: #000000;">Congratulations on your recently appointment as marketing manager of DSTV Online. Can you tell us a little about the position and what attracted you to it?</span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I love being the Marketing Manager for DStv Online. I feel incredibly lucky to be in this position at such a young age and I can’t wait to shape the role and make a difference for the group. I look after all the online marketing aspects of the MultiChoice set of websites, <a href="http://www.supersport.com/" target="_blank">www.Supersport.com</a>, <a href="www.Vuzu.tv" target="_blank">www.Vuzu.tv</a>, <a href="http://mnet.co.za/" target="_blank">Mnet.co.za</a>, <a href="http://www.dstv.com" target="_blank">www.dstv.com</a> and <a href="http://www.africanfilmlibrary.com/" target="_blank">www.africanfilmlibrary.com</a> amongst others. It’s an incredibly exciting time to be involved in the company as there are a lot of new things coming from the group. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> I also look after most of the <a href="http://www.mxitlifestyle.com/" target="_blank">Mxit</a> presence and advertising, PR and comms for the websites and DStv Online, as well as looking after the internal comms of the DStv Online team. I love the challenge and the volume of work keeps me motivated and out of trouble. We’re also trying out new things in the social media space which is exciting as I feel extremely fortunate to be able to run all these projects and be involved in so many aspects of the company. Obviously not to mention the SEM and SEO campaigns that we are busy putting into place for the sites. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> I think originally I was hired to only do the strict online marketing but now my responsibilities have grown to include anything remotely marketing related for DStv Online. I’ve always been a closet geek and the fact that I could be exposed to so many talented people and this innovative online space in South Africa is what originally attracted me to the position.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Can you tell us about some of the advances DSTV Online has made in recent years?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>We’ve recently launched <a href="http://www.africanfilmlibrary.com/" target="_blank">www.Africanfilmlibrary.com</a> which is in its Beta stage until early next year. We’ve secured the rights to over 600 African film titles; movies that have made an impact on the African cinematography and in most parts have won accolades for the filmmakers. It is an incredible online space and we have a chance to preserve the African heritage and share it with rest of the world. It will be one of the first fully fledged Video-on-Demand spaces where users can download and watch the movies as a rental service.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> DSTV Mobile has been in trial for a number of years. Can you give us an update as to its progress and future plans especially in regard to the 2010 Soccer World Cup?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> As with the rest of South Africa, everyone has special plans for the 2010 Soccer World Cup and I am sure so do DStv Mobile. Unfortunately I am not privy to all their information, but they are an awesome bunch of people and I’m sure that they have a lot of things up their sleeves.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Can you tell us about some of the features of DSTV.com that we might not know about?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:</span></strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"> e DStv.com forum (</span><a href="http://forum.dstv.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #0000ff;">http://forum.dstv.com/</span></a><span style="color: #0000ff;"> ) is incredibly successful. We have a panel of experts throughout the business to answer users questions and it acts as first contact point before users approach the call centre. </span></span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">It is encouraging to see so many DStv advocates helping fellow members address their queries and help each other out. We monitor the Forum very closely but we allow our users to democratically exercise their freedom of speech, which is not always very welcomed by most corporates and often ends in tough questions having to be answered by the group.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> When do you think services such as <a href="http://www.hulu.com/" target="_blank">Hulu.com</a> and the <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/" target="_blank">BBC&#8217;s iPlayer</a> will be viable in South Africa?</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> This is a tough question, as a lot of the content that these services provide is rights secured for certain geo-locations. Until the content providers change their rights we will not see these services in South Africa. This is a major political and commercial game for the production houses and in this day and age where all the content originators are trying to make online content commercially viable (or not run at a flat-out loss) they will need to see scale and commercial gains before they would launch anything in South Africa. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> If you look at online properties like the BBC iPlayer, it is a VOD extension of the BBC brand, which provides the users with a catch-up service. We are not a key territory for them so I don’t see why they would want to spend resources rolling it out in South Africa (but I am not on their board of directors so who knows what they have in store). </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> Another major shortcoming of the SA online space is the lack of bandwidth. How many times have all of us wondered if we can download that latest episode of Californication or is that going to leave us capped 3 days into the month? What about the irritating buffering beach ball of hell? The speed alone is a barrier to entry into this market. You can’t grow scale for an online property if you only have 10% of the population with limited, handicapped access to the Internet. Imagine watching Egoli on a Vodacom 3G. I’d rather poke my eyes out &#8211; on both counts. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"> I would suggest that you closely watch this space for new video developments in the South African market from our own local brands.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></span></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Is there anyone in South Africa that hasn’t been affected by crime? Has it changed our perception? Of course it has, but I like to think that it does not dictate the way I live my life. Yes, I am more vigilant and may think twice these days before driving into downtown Joburg late at night alone (something I used to do freely in the past) but I refuse for it to get in the way of my life. If anything, I think it has made us be more protective of our country and care so much more about what happens to all of us as a nation.</span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q: </strong>Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Yes and No. Yes, because essentially we are immigrants in South Africa as I was born in Estonia. No, because even though I lived in England for a very long short time, I couldn’t think of a better place to live than in South Africa. I feel very sad for the people who fail to see the natural beauty and the business opportunities that this country provides. Wake-up people, wake-up!</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> If you were given the opportunity of sitting down with the president, what advice would you offer him?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: <span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Set-up computer labs and educational facilities in low-income areas. Being computer literate and online savvy will take you very far in business and in life and will aid young entrepreneurs to achieve their dreams. </span></span></strong></span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Also I’d thank him for not wearing Madiba shirts and ask him if the shower really helped.</span></span></strong></span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Q:</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"> To which three attractions would you first take an international visitor?</span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Three attractions would never give this country justice. Can I make it three days? Sweet. And money is not a concern of course… </span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong> Day 1:</strong> Wake up at the <a href="http://www.ellerman.co.za/index_villa.php?house_id=2" target="_blank">Ellerman Villa</a> in Bantry Bay and take a helicopter trip over the Cape Peninsula to stop for lunch in the winelands with some highly drinkable wine like Kanonkop. Afternoon on Table Mountain followed by cocktails in Camps Bay and dinner at one of the many scrumptious restaurants. </span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong> Day 2:</strong> Miraculously wake up in Johannesburg at the Saxon and go on a tour through the chaotic CBD and Soweto. I’d probably take them to dinner at <a href="http://www.moyo.co.za/" target="_blank">Moyo</a> at Melrose Arch only because of its palatable touristy atmosphere. </span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong> Day 3:</strong> Wake up at Singita or <a href="http://www.royalmalewane.com" target="_blank">Royal Malewane</a> in the bush and spend the day with the lions and the giraffes in their natural habitat. I think you’ve not lived until you have been charged by 20 elephants and a wounded buffalo. True story.</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p>
<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Life in Johannesburg</strong></span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> What are favorite venues for a great night out?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Well, that depends on the company, but I would say dinner at <a href="http://www.dining-out.co.za/member_details-MemberID-2905.html" target="_blank">Cilantro</a> or one of the other Parkhurst restaurants, followed by some drinks and takkie squeaking at Gin and Tokyo Star. Sinfully dark and full of art and film students you are guaranteed a fun night out.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong> </strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Q:</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> What do you most enjoy about living in Johannesburg?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I love the rawness and the organized chaos that is Johannesburg. You never know what or who you’re going to encounter on a routine trip to pick up the milk. Out of all the places I’ve lived in the world, I feel incredibly at home in Johannesburg.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Favorite restaurant for a lazy Sunday afternoon lunch?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Once again, depends on company. For a more formal day out, nothing beats the opulent Saxon brunch. For an informal get together with friends a picnic at the botanical gardens or if I lived in the Western Cape I would head up to Kalk Bay for a luncheon. I’m also inclined to say home with loads of nice home cooked food, something I don’t get enough of these days!</span></span></span></p>
<h3 style="font-size: 1.17em;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">General</span></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-604" style="margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; border: 1px solid black;" title="anna1" src="http://www.izimvo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/anna1.jpg" alt="anna1" width="217" height="272" />Q:</strong> What are some of the more interesting ways that DSTV Online is making use of social media?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>We’ve incorporated social media into all the online properties that we look after. We also have a social network underpinning a lot of the M-Net local production websites which have been very successful especially with shows like the <a href="http://www.mnetafrica.com/bigbrother/" target="_blank">Big Brother Africa</a> and on <a href="http://www.vuzu.tv" target="_blank">Vuzu.tv</a> as they allow users to connect, comment and interact with each other and the websites.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you were able to pick anyone as your mentor, who would it be and why?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I could never just pick one. I’d like to think that everyone that surrounds me has something that I can learn from, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and I like to identify strengths that others have and learn how I can incorporate them into my own life, personal and professional. I would love to leave a legacy like Anna Wintour, Maria Ramos or Mother Theresa. Ok, we know the last one aint gonna happen…</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Favorite channel and show on DSTV?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Is it wrong of me to confess that I don’t own a TV? I’m planning on changing that shortly but my life is either online or completely offline, I watch most of the video online or in the comfort of my own time and will, at friends houses. Show wise I would have to pick the Big Bang Theory and Californication. Mighty Boosh is still one of my all time favourite shows.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> One book that you would make required reading for all matric pupils?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">Q: <span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Where’s Wally? Happy spotting! I would suggest anything on emotional intelligence or any of the more popular business books just to show the young kids that with enough drive you can achieve anything you put your mind to! </span></span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">But at that age none of the business books will resonate with you, so I would like to make sure that it is compulsory to study global history and the political and economic mistakes so that we don’t produce the next Hitler, Bob or Sarah Palin.</span></span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Q:</strong> Favorite South African brand?</span></span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Julius Malema. Never has one adult made such a joke out of a youth organisation. Hours of amusement.</span></span></span></strong></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><strong>Q:</strong> Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Shabir Shaik, ask him how his golf swing is going. Trevor Ncube ( <a href="http://twitter.com/3bucn" target="_blank">http://twitter.com/3bucn</a>) on his view of what Zim needs in order to turn around its economic conditions.</span></span></span></span></p>
<p>Anna together with a number of popular South African web personalities made<a href="http://www.mg.co.za/article/2009-06-08-plane-collides-with-car-in-freak-accident" target="_blank"> local</a> and <a href="http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2009/06/08/miracle-escape-as-plane-crashes-into-pick-up-truck-in-south-africa-video-and-pictures-115875-21425295/" target="_blank">international</a> headlines in June when the Ford Ranger they were traveling in collided head-on with an aeroplane. The group were traveling home after a<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freebording" target="_blank"> freeboarding</a> outing near Krugersdorp. Fellow Izimvo interviewees, <a href="http://www.izimvo.com/mike-stopforth/" target="_blank">Mike Stopforth</a>, <a href="http://www.izimvo.com/nic-haralambous/" target="_blank">Nic Haralambous</a> and <a href="http://www.izimvo.com/don-packett/" target="_blank">Don Packett</a> were also at the scene of the accident. Luckily no-one  was seriously injured.</p>
<p>A massive thank you to Anna for taking the time to answer our questions. We&#8217;d like to wish her every success for the future.</p>

<p>Brendan was kind enough to answer the following questions for us:</p>
<p><strong>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event?  i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Brendan Jack. 35. Film and TV writer, performer, director, producer, marketer. Or &#8220;that guy from that film&#8230;&#8221; </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I don&#8217;t know how to fly a helicopter. My favourite movie used to be Glengarry Glen Ross. I sometimes battle to use Clingwrap (surely they can fix the interface, it&#8217;s 2009.) I lived in a monastery in Los Angeles for a year.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><strong> </strong>Pretend I&#8217;m taking a cellphone call, then walking briskly until I&#8217;m hidden by bushes.</span></p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>South African Film</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-379" style="border: 1px solid black;" title="brendan3" src="http://www.izimvo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/brendan3.jpg" alt="brendan3" width="200" height="153" />Q: </strong>With the recent success of South African movies such as Neill Blomkamp&#8217;s District 9 and Gavin Hood&#8217;s Tsotsi, what are your thoughts on the current state of our film industry and are you optimistic for its future?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">A:</span></strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"> I am optimistic and it is growing. It just needs more product to be put out every year, so the industry has more chance of getting the elusive formula right. If more local films had Peter Jackson&#8217;s backing, input, budgets and international distribution, there would definitely be a lot more succes</span></span><span style="color: #0000ff;">s.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> You&#8217;ve personally been involved in a number of successful local films including Footskating 101 and Crazy Monkey&#8217;s Straight Outta Benoni which opened at number 1 at the South African box office. What, in your opinion, are the key ingredients for making a successful movie in the South African context?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>A solid blueprint in the form of a compelling script, a start-up mentality, a committed team, endless hard work, knowledge of the market you&#8217;re making it for, and a lot of luck. Unfortunately most audiences want to see a slick, big budget Hollywood affair. So you need to create a product that plays to the strengths and budget that you have available. Also, making the film is the easy part when you compare it to the selling and marketing of the film.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> South African audiences are known for not supporting locally produced film and TV. Are you finding an end to this trend in light of the recent success stories?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>There&#8217;s been a lot of support and goodwill towards the films I&#8217;ve been involved in. But we have a rather small cinema-going population, which means you have to work extra hard to draw an audience. With regards to the recent success stories you mentioned, opening number one worldwide and winning a foreign Oscar will definitely bring in the local audience. But for these two successes, there are twenty other local films that weren&#8217;t supported.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> We have a wealth of exceptional talented South African actors. Who have you most enjoyed working with and who would you love to work with?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Rob Van Vuuren was great to work with in Footskating 101. And Robert Whitehead (Barker in Isidingo) has got skills. Perhaps people like Casper De Vries, Sonia Esgueira or Arnold Vosloo (if he can still do the SA accent.) There are a number of emerging talents that I look forward to working with soon.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Can you tell us about what you are currently working on?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Various TV show pilots are in focus groups. (Perhaps there&#8217;s room for a show about focus groups.) I&#8217;m producing video marketing campaigns, specifically looking online at viral, branded content and webisodes; it&#8217;s a whole new frontier. An example is a recent campaign for Puma International, where I plan to run against Usain Bolt in the future. There are a number of these videos, podcasts, sketches and other webisodes on my website. I&#8217;m also currently doing comedy motivational talks for corporates, a short film to encourage blood donation, voice-overs, writing, and discussing the next feature film with various people.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Yes. It makes you lose your rose-tinted outlook. But you can&#8217;t dwell on it for long or it will paralyze you and make you bitter.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?<br />
<span style="color: #0000ff;"><br />
<strong>A:</strong> I&#8217;ve sent Charlize Theron several emails about living at her place. No reply. So I&#8217;m here for the duration.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you were South African president for just oneday, what would you change?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>My car. I&#8217;d also double school teacher salaries.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> To which three attractions would you first take an international visitor?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Tokara winery and restaurant in Stellenbosch, everywhere in the Karoo, especially the Swartberg mountain pass, and maybe Ernie&#8217;s house at Leopard Creek, near Nelspruit.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in Johannesburg</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Which stand up venue in or around Johannesburg is your personal favorite?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The Comedy Underground at Cool Runnings in Melville. I did my first gigs there. Just don&#8217;t expect frills in the basement.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> If you were looking for locations to show off Johannesburg to the world, which places would be on your short list?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>The stadiums as seen from the top of Ponte, sunset at The Westcliff, and the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens. (And a fourth while you&#8217;re in Roodepoort, the Flying Saucer House. If it hasn&#8217;t taken off.)</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Favorite restaurant for dinner with a group of friends?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Grillhouse in Rosebank, Byzance in Lonehill</span>.</p>
<p><strong>General</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-377" style="border: 1px solid black;" title="brendan" src="http://www.izimvo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/brendan.jpg" alt="brendan" width="180" height="254" />Q: </strong>Who do you consider as the funniest person ever?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Impossible to answer. Smith and Jones, Benny Hill and Bill Murray when I was a kid. Dylan Moran, Jennifer Saunders, Bill Bailey, the Mighty Boosh, Jermaine from Flight of the Conchords, Gavin Williams from Straight Outta Benoni&#8230; many more</span>.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you were able to pick anyone as your mentor, who would it be and why?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Possibly David Letterman and Terry Gilliam during the week, Jack Nicholson and Daniel Day-Lewis on the weekends.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Where would you like to wake up tomorrow?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> At my parent&#8217;s guest farm, Clements Retreat, in the Magaliesburg Valley. <a href="http://www.clementsretreat.com/" target="_blank">http://www.clementsretreat.com</a></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong> </strong>Q: If you could to invite 3 South Africans from any era to a dinner party, who would they be and what would you be serving?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I know you said 3, but&#8230; Tolkien, (technically South African), David Rattray, JM Coetzee, who&#8217;s apparently only laughed once in his life, so he could be fun next to the gregarious Obie Oberholzer. (I know, a lot of older white dudes so far.) Henry Cele, sitting next to the real Shaka, Trevor Rabin handling the music, and Kevin Pietersen to serve food and do the dishes. (Charlize never responded to the Facebook invite.)</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Perhaps start with a tuna tartar, with avocado, caviar with ponzu dressing. Then various incarnations of Karoo lamb, including some sort of roulade, all served with a case of Schalk Burger and Sons&#8217; Welbedacht Hattrick red. Then get KP to throw something easy together for dessert, like a sorbet of cheese-stuffed strawberries with Campari &amp; orange confit. All of which I currently have in my fridge. If anyone wanted to get rowdy afterwards, we could make Hayemakers, a drink they concocted in honour of David Haye, the newly crowned heavyweight champion of the world. It&#8217;s Guinness, Pernod and a red Sparberry depth charge. Classy.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong> </strong><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Marius Weyers, Julius Malema and Riaan Cruywagen. In that order.</span></p>
<p>A massive thank you to Brendan for a hilarious interview. Reminder that you can become a fan of Izimvo on our Facebook page. It is the perfect place to submit interviewee and question suggestions. <a href="http://www.facebook.com/izimvo" target="_blank">http://www.facebook.com/izimvo</a></p>

<p>Izimvo is excited to introduce South African blogging phenom, Seth Rotherham.</p>
<p>Seth has masterfully turned his blog into a destination site attracting over 50 000 unique readers a month. His daily antics, which ensure a smile for even the most ardent reader, have turned the 2oceansvibe brand into one of the hottest commodities around. As a result, leading South African brands such as Audi, Puma and Ray-Ban are willing to pay tens of thousands just to have their brands mentioned on his site.</p>
<p>When speaking to Seth, you get the sense that he is about to take over the world. The continued success of the blog along with new projects such as the soon-to-be-released 2coeansvibe Jobs and DVD will cement the 2oceansvibe brand as a household name and make it as South African as Mrs Balls Chutney and Ouma Rusks.</p>
<p>Website: <a href="http://www.2oceansvibe.com/" target="_blank">http://www.2oceansvibe.com<br />
</a><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Twitter: <a href="http://twitter.com/2oceansvibe" target="_blank">http://twitter.com/2oceansvibe</a></span></p>
<p>Seth was kind enough to answer the following questions for us:</p>
<p><strong>Personal </strong><strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Seth Rotherham, editor and owner of 2oceansvibe Media.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> I smoked a joint before answering these questions.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Playing vinyl records in The Safe house with the Atlantic Ocean in front of me, sipping on a cold bottle of Jack Black beer.</span></p>
<p><strong>Blogging in South Africa</strong><strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Which local blogs do you read on a daily basis?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>MyBrandedLifeTM &#8211; <a href="http://mybrandedlife.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">http://mybrandedlife.wordpress.com</a><br />
</span><br />
<strong>Q:</strong> Having dominated the SA Blog awards since it started in 2005, are there any awards that you would still like to win?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong>Would the Nobel prize be pushing it?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> What are your future plans with the 2oceansvibe brand? Anything mainstream in the works, perhaps your own talk-show?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong>2oceansvibe Media will be launching 2oceansvibe Jobs quite soon which will be a job hunting place for all NON 9 to 5 jobs. ie. freelance, part-time and temp work. From Chartered Accountants to people in the film industry to waiters and Personal assistants. Because 9 to 5 is not our vibe. Also got a DVD coming out in time for Christmas which will have the best videos of 2oceansvibe. Including all the 2oceansvibe episodes and Weathergirls, as well as the Pauly Shore series I shot in Hollywood, as well as bonus vids.. Regarding a talk show&#8230;. sure, bring it on!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> When approaching a potential sponsor for 2oceansvibe, what are the key selling points that you use to drive home the deal?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Most of the 2oceansvibe sponsors have come to me, rather than the other way around. They need to suit the vibe and very often I have had to reject the proposal as the choice in brands wouldn&#8217;t be true to my readers. I am at pains to maintain integrity and only work with brands that I truly believe in. If they come to me and ask me what the bonuses are of being affiliated with 2oceansvibe, I&#8217;d say they get exposed to 50,000+ unique readers a month, as well as being endorsed by 2oceansvibe and Seth Rotherham which, over the last 8 years, has developed a very trusted, clean brand. And lastly, the exposure on the site may even get you a Google number 1!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> What advice would you give to South African bloggers wanting to turn their passion into a career?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Find your niche, find your USP, write every day, link to each other and kick off with some affiliate systems. You can talk about any book on any topic in the world and Amazon will pay you a commission on any sales generated from your article. That&#8217;s a good start!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>There is a fine line between promotion and spam, how did you promote your blog in the early days?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>There was a massive cult-like groundswell and word of mouth was the order of the day. People felt proud to be a part of something fun and &#8220;underground.&#8221; There was no promotion other than hopefully getting the reader to laugh out loud and tell their friend about it.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in South Africa</strong><strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> I&#8217;ve had close friends who have been held at gun point and close friend&#8217;s who have lost family during botched robberies. It has not affected my perception of the country and how beautiful it is and what a special place it is to live. Bad things happen all over the world. People have been running from SA since 1994. Look whats happened since then &#8211; we&#8217;re hosting a world cup and they&#8217;re all coming back. Did you see what George W Bush did to America? Surely THAT&#8217;S something to worry about? Or Gordon Brown? Burlesconi? We&#8217;ve got it good &#8211; just look around &#8211; smell the roses &#8211; be cautious.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> No. I spend part of the year overseas including our family bastide in the Provence and often a trip to the States , but have never considered a permanent move. If I HAD to, probably the bastide in Menerbes. Or New York &#8211; I could live half the year in New York. And LA, I suppose &#8211; LA is hilarious. I like hilarious.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>If you were South African president for just one day, what would you change?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> I would ensure cyclists that go through red traffic lights and set a bad example to our kids (who will do the same and die), are prosecuted on site.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> To which three attractions would you first take an international visitor?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Caprice in Camps Bay on a Sunday night, a full-moon Lions View Mountain hike (stroll), breakfast at Miss K in Green Point, followed by a day at my secret Camps Bay beach.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in Cape Town</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Cape Town&#8217;s trendiest nightspot?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Cafe Caprice, Camps Bay. HQ Restaurant, Heritage Square. Cape Royale Hotel Sky Bar.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Which areas in or around Cape Town would you suggest to an international visitors looking to get the most from their Soccer World Cup trip?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Probably Franschhoek. Maybe a weekend at La Residence with a lunch at Boschendal. Also Stanford, just outside Hermanus. Have lunch at Mariana&#8217;s restaurant in Stanford. Probably the best cooking in South Africa. Husband and wife team. It&#8217;ll blow your mind. Only open once or twice a week. Book MILES in advance.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Where is the perfect cocktail venue? What would you order?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Poolside at the villa in Provence. It would either be the new 2oceansvibe cocktail recipe from Caprice, or a glass of De Grendel Rose!</span></p>
<p><strong>General</strong><strong></strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> What are you going to buy yourself as a 40th birthday present?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> A yacht. Maybe.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Favorite South African sporting moment of the last 10 years?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> the most recent rugby World Cup. But probably the most recent Tri Nations victory &#8211; because it secured our side the record of having the most trophies at one time of any rugby team in history. Also because the captain is 2oceansvibe Character, The Barn Dog!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> One book that you would make required reading for all matric pupils?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong><a href="http://etrader.kalahari.net/referral.asp?linkid=5&amp;partnerid=6669&amp;sku=27848142" target="_blank">Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi</a></span><br />
<strong> </strong><br />
<strong>Q:</strong> Where would you like to wake up tomorrow?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Right here.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Supermodels.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-294" title="2oceanvibe" src="http://www.izimvo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/2oceanvibe.gif" alt="2oceanvibe" width="300" height="150" />A huge thank you to Seth for taking the time to answer our questions. As Seth would say, work is a sideline &#8211; live the holiday! </span></p>

<p>Izimvo would like to introduce Dave Duarte.</p>
<p>Dave, at only 27, is an Internet and mobile marketing specialist holding several senior positions in the academic, commercial and non-profit sectors. <span style="background-color: #ffffff;">He is the founder of two Executive courses at UCT, lectures on their Executive MBA programme and is MD and Partner at <a href="http://huddlemind.net/" target="_blank">Huddlemind Labs</a>. </span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Dave is also the co-owner of <a href="http://www.muti.co.za/" target="_blank">Muti.co.za</a>, Africa’s most popular online social bookmarking application, Public Lead for Creative Commons (CC) South Africa, Dean of Digital Dream Faculty at The Maharishi Institute of Management and the co-founder of 27dinners.</span></p>
<p>Web: <a href="http://www.huddlemind.net" target="_blank">http://www.huddlemind.net</a><br />
Blog: <a href="http://daveduarte.co.za/" target="_blank">http://daveduarte.co.za<br />
</a><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Twitter: <a href="http://www.twitter.com/daveduarte" target="_blank">http://www.twitter.com/daveduarte</a></span></p>
<p>Dave was kind enough to answer the following questions:</p>
<p><strong>Personal</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event?  i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Meet Dave Duarte,  27, who regards himself as a bit of a “marketing geek”.  He’s actively involved in something like 11 different ventures, most of which are going along decently. He plays in the Academic, Commercial and Non-Profit space.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Dave enjoys hiking, basketball, tennis and squash &#8211; though he rarely beats any of his opponents.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>I started a coffeeshop/bistro in Hout Bay, called Redemption Cafe with Max Kaizen &#8211; which we sold in 2004. I still spend an inordinate amount of time in coffee shops, and have around 3-5 cups of the best coffee I can find every day.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>To work intensely, I need to relax properly, so I take holidays seriously. My girlfriend and I try get away to a different small-town every second week, and we take three longer holidays each year where we go overseas or to a resort.</span><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Education  in South Africa</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> In your experience, have you found that our tertiary education system is keeping up with the rapid changes of technology?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> The formal structures at universities are not keeping up at all, but on a student level I’ve seen innovative approaches to learning &#8211; for example, some students will make their own podcasts, blogs and social-learning-networks to enhance their educational experience.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Other than that,  the pace of development in many sectors is rendering a lot of expensive printed text books practically obsolete. Online and Mobile texts are a must (IMHO).</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> After running a couple of courses of Nomadic Marketing at UCT, are South African corporates catching onto Social Media &amp; the Web in general?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> They certainly are! Or, at least the ones that I deal with are.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> What do you think can be done to narrow the current divide between public and private schools?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Pay teachers more, and work on the leadership crisis in public schools in SA</span>.</p>
<p><strong>Life in South Africa</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> No-one in my family has been seriously affected by crime, besides the occasional mugging (that’s normal, right?).</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong> I’m not keen to leave SA, but if I did I think I’d go to another African country- perhaps Tanzania.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong> Q:</strong> If you were South African president for just one day, what would you change?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> One day?! I’d probably change my socks and underwear, then make a strong suggestion to the Education and Communication Ministers to be more progressive.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> To which three attractions would you first take an international visitor?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Robben Island, Table Mountain, and the Tsitsikamma Forrest.</span></p>
<p><strong>Life in Cape Town</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> What is your favorite cocktail venue to enjoy the beautiful sunsets Cape Town is famous for?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Llandudno Beach (bring your own virgin-cocktail ingredients).</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>With the 2010 World cup only a matter on months away, which of Cape Town&#8217;s current sporting venues is your favorite?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Greenpoint Stadium (it’s the only one I’ve seen!)</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> Where do you recommend for those looking for a cultural outing in and around Cape Town?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> If you’re a well-off local and haven’t been to Mzoli’s for a braai, then I’d recommend that.</span></p>
<p><strong>General</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What are you going to buy yourself as a 40th birthday present?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> Haha! Perhaps a year or two of travelling, writing and thinking. Who knows?!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q:</strong> One book that you would make required reading for all matric pupils?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A: </strong>Long Walk to Freedom by Madiba.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>What was the last movie you saw on the big screen ?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> District 9. Awesome!</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Q: </strong>Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>A:</strong> <a href="http://marlonparker.co.za/" target="_blank">Marlon Parker</a>, who has set up drug counseling services via Mxit, Twitter and Blogs run by ex-gangsters from the Cape Flats.</span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">A very big thank you to Dave for taking the time to answer our questions. Dave has certainly redefined our definition of a role model. </span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Please feel free to post any follow up questions you may have for Dave as a comment to this interview. We&#8217;d like to start the conversation by asking, you the reader, one of Dave&#8217;s questions. <em>&#8220;What do you think can be done to narrow the current divide between public and private schools?&#8221;</em></span></p>
