Today we have the great honour of introducing First National Bank CEO and Bartinney wine farmer: Michael Jordaan.

Becoming Chief Executive of First National Bank before the age of 40, Michael first started his banking career in the early 90′s with Deutsche Bank. Michael’s other passion however is his wine farm, Bartinney, which overlooks the Banghoek Valley in Stellenbosch.

Website: http://www.fnb.co.za
Wine Farm: http://www.bartinney.co.za/home.htm

Michael was kind enough to answer the following questions:

Personal

Q: The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.

A: This is Michael Jordaan. He is 42 years old and is a wine farmer, which is such an expensive hobby that it requires a day job in finance.

Q: Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favourite movie.

A: At work some people listen to me some of the time. At home, where I have a wife and three daughters, no one listens to me ever. It’s one reason why I love my job!

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?

A: We have a fisherman’s cottage on the West Coast in an idyllic village called Churchhaven. Our cottage only has solar power and rain water. When we are there, we read, debate, walk, fish and consume a lot of red wine.

Q: How would you describe your dream holiday home and where in South African would you like it to be?

A: Same as above. Aren’t we fortunate to live our dream?!

This question was proudly sponsored by Private Property. - Looking for the perfect guest house on the West Coast? How about this Boutique Guest House situated on the beach in Paternoster. Professionally decorated by Interior decorators and sold with furniture and fittings. 6 bedrooms en suite.

First National Bank

Q: Tell us a little about your history with First National Bank, how you got started in banking and what the average day of a CEO is like?

A: I started my banking career in Hamburg, Germany with Deutsche Bank. For the first three months I was a teller but as part of their management trainee programme I eventually graduated to corporate banking. I returned to South Africa to do my doctorate in Economics but after a few months I noticed a riddle in the newspaper that advertised a job at Rand Merchant Bank. I applied, got the job, and later went over to FNB after RMB and Momentum had merged with FNB and Southern Life.

Q: Congratulations on a flawless PayPal launch here in South Africa. How will the average South African benefit from having a PayPal account and can you tell us what was the greatest hurdle FNB had to overcome in bringing the service to South Africa?

A: PayPal allows South Africans to shop across the border without disclosing their personal or financial details. However I do not think that this is the major benefit that our association with PayPal brings. Far rather I think the major benefits will flow to entrepreneurs that will now be able to sell their products and services to 190 countries and leverage off 81 million active consumers. Up until now international payments have seriously held back what is otherwise a very innovative culture of ecommerce in South Africa.

Q: First National Bank is known for being a leader in banking innovation here in South Africa. Which recent innovations are you most proud of and what is the bank doing to encourage and nurture innovation from within?

A: We recently launched a product called, Send Someone Money, which allows anyone with an FNB bank account to send money to a cellphone number. The recipient doesn’t need a bank account, they can go and withdraw the money from an ATM or on-send the money to someone else with a cellphone number. We take innovation very seriously in FNB. None of these innovations simply happen by chance. As an incentive, we offer a million rand every year to any person who comes up with a great idea and then implements it. In the last year, there were so many good implementations, that we eventually awarded four prizes of one million rand each. This goes a long way towards creating the right type of culture within a large corporate which could otherwise be very bureaucratic.

Q: What advice would you offer the average South African family wanting to better manage their monthly finances?

A: My belief is that very few SA families actually sit down and discuss finance on a regular basis. That would be my basic advice. Make time for an hour’s discussion involving the entire family and discuss the actual figures, i.e. the income and expenses for the past month. In business there’s the cliché that goes: “What gets measured, gets done”. I think exactly the same applies to our personal lives.

Q: Any exciting new products or services that FNB customers can look forward to in the near future?

A: I am particularly excited about all the abilities to perform banking transactions without having a bank account. While this is somewhat scary for a bank I believe we must embrace the new opportunities and if necessary, cannibalise our existing business as it is in the interest of the customer to become more and more convenient.

Life in South Africa

Q: Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?

A: Some time ago my mother was viciously attacked while sleeping in a Plettenberg Bay holiday home. It was very traumatic for all of us. At the same time, one must remember that becoming one of the statistics shouldn’t change one’s entire view of a country. We try and play a proactive and supportive role. You may remember that some time ago FNB nearly launched a nationwide anti-crime campaign. We still believe that the fight against crime should be one of the top priorities in the country.

Q: When asked internationally about crime in South Africa, how do you respond?

A: We do believe that the level of crime is unacceptably high but fortunately the statistics also show that it has been reducing for a number of years. As bankers we know that one should give credit where credit is due and my sense is that the authorities are taking crime far more seriously than a few years ago.

Q: With less than 100 days to the first African Soccer World Cup, what advice would you offer to first-time visitors looking for the ultimate South African experience?

A: When traveling in another country the experience can be very sterile. Best you have friends in that country and you venture into places that the locals frequent. I would therefore advise anyone to make friends and to explore our beautiful country. Their visit should at least include a trip to a game farm and a roasting on one of our beaches. And of course, to drink lots of our wine, the wine farmers need it.

Q: What advice would you offer the president if given the opportunity of sitting down with him?

A: I believe that the priorities of our government are broadly correct in focusing on jobs, education and health. What is lacking is a culture of ruthless execution. In business we support such a culture by combining carrots and sticks.

Life in Johannesburg

Q: What do you most enjoy about living in Johannesburg?

A: I love Joburg’s energy. For me it’s the New York of Africa.

Q: Favourite restaurant for a business lunch?

A: Ciro’s in Parktown North (they stock our Bartinney wine).

Q: If you were tasked with commissioning a postal stamp depicting the beauty of Johannesburg and it’s people, which image would you select?

A: I would choose the FNB-decorated Soweto cooling towers, of course.

General

Q: If you could invite any three South African CEO’s to a dinner party, who would you invite and what would you serve?

A: I would prefer dinner with my family and friends (I work far too many hours and my dinner party should bring some balance). I would serve a braai. Nothing like South Africa venison on the ‘wingerdstompies’.

Q: Which book would make required reading for all school-leavers and which book would you say has influenced you the most?

A: All school leavers should read “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, but the book that has influenced me the most is a long forgotten classic by Axel Munthe called “The story of San Michel”.

Q: Given a free hour at home, which would you rather do, put your feet up and relax or look for something productive to do?

A: Is reading a good book productive?

Q: Where to from here?

A: I’m very bullish about the growth prospects of South Africa in the next few years. We have the opportunity to enter into a growth super cycle as we expand into Africa and connect with the East, supported by further innovation in information technology. After banking, my dream would be to start my own (small) asset management company.

Q: Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo and what would you ask them?

A: I would prefer to read about entrepreneurs (not dull corporate types like myself) and people who have the vision to spot the opportunities that will be presenting themselves in South Africa and beyond.

We’d like to thank Michael for finding the time to answer our questions and wish him every success for the future.

Izimvo has the great pleasure of introducing marketing maven: Walter Pike.

With more than 30 years of experience in branding, marketing and advertising, Walter is an international thought leader on social media and digital marketing. Walter’s impressive Résumé includes being the former Head of Faculty: Marketing and Advertising, at the AAA School of Advertising, the founder of the Digital Marketing Academy, the first in the world to be accredited by Google and a member of the international chief marketing officers council advisory committee, as well as being the founder of PiKE | The New Marketing Agency.

Website: http://www.pike.co.za
Blog: http://walterpike.com
Twitter: http://twitter.com/walterpike
LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/walterpike

Walter was kind enough to answer the following questions:

Personal

Q: The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.

A: Walter is the owner and founder of PiKE a new kind of marketing/advertising agency – especially geared to operate in the new always on always connected world. (a new marketing agency in fact). The founder and owner of the Digital Academy, teaching new marketing and digital marketing. A happily single father of three stunning children. His mind is always active and is in demand as a speaker in conferences and corporate events, and has a weekly segment on Classic FM’s “the internet economy” and a frequent guest on international podcasts, radio and TV. If there is a commercial that has been built to summarise Walter’s attitude it is Apple Think Different Oh how old is Walter? that’s a difficult question, he thinks that he is going to live forever.

Q: Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.

A: I suppose that not many people know that I started off as a farmer, was a very keen Polo player and bred and raced a racehorse who won me a couple of races.

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?

A: Ha ha. I have been very bad at getting away from it all. I love flyfishing because it’s very active and can be intellectual – but in a totally different way to what I do all day. It a way of connecting into a different world, I like fishing clear mountain streams.

Q: How would you describe your dream home and where in South Africa would you like it to be?

A: Thats an amazingly difficult question as I need to balance both quiet time with connection with the buzz of the city. When I want the quiet I want it really quiet, very far from the crowds my favourite town is Rhodes (near Barclay East) but when I am in work mode – it must be Johannesburg, our unbeatable weather and energy is just what I want. What kind of house? comfortable nicely decorated and a place to leave.

This question was proudly sponsored by Private Property – looking for the ultimate home on northern Johannesburg? How about this R10m 6 bedroom farm-house mansion in North Riding. Enjoy the lifestyle of the country gentry with all the trappings of modern amenities close at hand. No compromise required…

Education & Digital Marketing in South Africa

Q: In your experience, have you found that our tertiary education system is keeping up with the rapid changes of technology?

A: Not even close. I have just left a position as Head of Faculty in a tertiary institution and I can tell you that without doubt.

Q: Do you feel that South African corporates catching onto Social Media & the web in general?

A: It is still very early in the adoption curve. We have moved from total ignorance to a position now that people are interested – but really don’t know much, but at least the awareness is there. They will catch on big time very soon.

Q: What are your thoughts on the local early adopter market? Are you finding that consumers are becoming more sophisticated in the choices they are making?

A: Interesting that you should ask that, I did a whole show on the Internet Economy talking about that very point. There is a segment in the market who are very quick in catching on and taking advantage of the market, in this space South African’s are truly world leaders. But – it’s a small group and the rest of the market are miles behind. Fantastic example was when Marc and I were sitting in Ballito and getting updates on Foursquare from exactly the same people.

Maybe more interesting is that in this space the corporates are behind the customers, for example very few are taking advantage of how the lower LSM’s are adopting cell phone technology, the marketing departments just don’t understand what is happening.

Q: Tell us more about the Digital Marketing Academy you started in 2009, and how the course is structured and what accreditation you can receive from the courses you offer?

A: The idea was that I felt that there needed to be a place where people could learn about Digital Marketing because i expect that when the market explodes its going to be really difficult to find the skills. So far we have only one course which is an overview strategy course, but it’s really comprehensive and we cover 22 topics from search engine optimisation to games and social media. During this year we will also be rolling out intensive courses in some of the topics. Google Adwords, Social Media, SEO etc. The Digital Strategy Course is given in conjunction with the AAA School of Advertising and is soon to be incorporated into the degree so is at NQF level 6 (degree level), graduates get an official AAA qualification.

I am aiming the academy at corporates, the ad agency sector and marketing departments. Interestingly many of the people on the course are people already involved in digital business.

Q: Which international web trends do you believe will shape the future of the web here in South Africa?

A: The adoption of the mobile internet is moving at a pace 8 times that of the “desktop” based internet at the same stage of its development. This will impact countries like South Africa even more than first world countries. the other think that we must keep in mind is that the new bandwidth coming in will change pricing and accessibility.

At the upper levels, smart phone use will similarly change the way people do business – and the big thing will be location based services. I also see augmented reality being a huge thing in the not too distant future.

Q: What can we look forward to from the academy in 2010?

A: A series of new specialised courses and in-house training programs covering the entire digital marketing space. These will include 1/2 day seminars on specific topics.

Q: Your other business PiKE – whats it all about:

A: I don’t believe that most people realise that online is not just another media channel. This is because the connections that are the internet have changed the way society operates and the fact that it provides a platform for people to publish have changed the way people find out stuff and how they buy things. The world changed – so marketing should change. I call this new marketing and it’s what we do.

Notice that it’s not digital, nor advertising, nor interactive its how to use all these tools to deliver marketing results in an always on, always connected world. We can deliver a television campaign for example – but in a different way. We are also very skilled in social media marketing.

Life in South Africa

Q: Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?

A: I had a car stolen a year or two back. But to be honest I refuse to be restricted by fear, I am not reckless but in the same vein I live my live as I want.

Q: Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?

A: Not sure actually – maybe Europe?

Q: What are your thoughts on the fiber optic cables such as Seacom and the impact they will have on Southern Africa?

A: They are going to have a massive impact – huge. Broadband connectivity is a significant driver of growth the real issue is the last mile – how do we get everyone connected, and there are some hugely innovative projects going out around this.

Q: With less than 100 days to the first African Soccer World Cup, what advice would you offer to first-time visitors looking for the ultimate South African experience?

A: Look past all the stereotypes and engage with real people in read places.

Life in Johannesburg

Q: What do you most enjoy about living in Johannesburg?

A: The pace, and the incredible weather. Also the fact that almost everyone I want to talk to is here.

Q: Favorite restaurant for a lazy Sunday afternoon lunch?

A: Papachinos in Midrand.

Q: If you were tasked with commissioning a postal stamp depicting the beauty of Johannesburg and it’s people, which image would you select?

A: Johannesburg is the biggest urban forest in the world – Trees and bird life.

Q: If you had to pick a getaway less than 2 hours from Johannesburg, where would it be?

A: The Vaal is one of the most interesting and productive rivers anywhere – somewhere below the barrage – say Potch – amazingly enough!

General

Q: One book that you would make required reading for all matric pupils?

A: Is there really a single book? At the moment Linchpin by Seth Godin or Crush It by Gary Vaynerchuk.

Q: Once piece of advice you would most like to give the 18-year-old you?

A: Listen to everyones advice – but don’t take it – do what gives you a rush. Every single one of my best decisions have been made with my heart. Embrace failure – the only people who have never failed are those who have never tried!

Q: What was the last movie you saw on the big screen?

A: Avatar.

We’d like to thank Walter for taking the time to answer our questions and wish him every success for the future.

Izimvo has the honour of introducing 94.7′s Brad Brown.

Brad, a familiar voice on Johannesburg’s 94.7 Highveld Stereo, is a great example of determination. After an unsuccessful Hot Jock audition in late 2002, Brad got right back into the massive audition lines and tried again. Second time round Brad made it through the preliminary judging and went on to book his place in the final. Although he did not win, Brad used the opportunity to push for an audition show which he finally got in 2003.

As well as Radio DJ on 94.7, Brad is also an accomplished voice over artist, club DJ and successful entrepreneur with interests in three companies.

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Brad-Brown/158393978752
Location: Johannesburg

Brad was kind enough to answer the following questions:

Personal

Q: The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.

A: I’m not really big on huge social events but my best mate would introduce me as Brad, 33, entrepreneur, radio jock and proper South African bloke.

Q: Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.

A: I have secret ambitions of being the front man of a rock band! Seriously, I got into radio because at the time I got an opportunity to get into the entertainment industry and I thought it would be a way to get to my goal. Thirteen years later I’m still on radio and don’t have a band.

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?

A: I love the bush. I really don’t get to go often enough. I also enjoy a round of golf to put things into perspective. With my golf game you realise things can’t get much worse that that!

Q: How would you describe your dream home and where in South Africa would you like it to be?

A: Ideally it would be in the middle of a game reserve. Nothing to big, but comfortable, all open plan with huge full length glass sliding doors so that it can open up the entire house. If I could run my businesses from the Kruger Park I’d move out there tomorrow.

This question was proudly sponsored by Private Property

Radio in South Africa

Q: You first stated your radio career at RAU Radio where you hosted various shows and eventually becoming head DJ. What were the most important lessons you learnt while working for the student radio station?

A: The few years I spent on RAU Radio (Now UJFM) were probably the best foundation I could’ve ever hoped for in my radio career. We had a phenomenal group of on and off air talent. Many of them have gone on to successful careers. I learnt two big lessons on campus radio. The first was to find someone you could learn from take their advice to keep getting better. As soon as you think you’re good enough you stop growing. The second was to believe in yourself. I learnt quickly that if you don’t back yourself no one will. Those two lessons haven’t only helped me in my radio career; they’ve been invaluable in my businesses too.

Q: Your 94.7 Highveld Stereo “lucky break” included a failed attempt at their “Hot Jock” Idols like competition. What made you come back again and was there ever a stage where you thought it was not to be?

A: I had sent demo tapes through to Highveld for a couple years with absolutely no luck. I’m the proud owner of a whole bunch of standardised rejection letters. By the time Hot Jocks came around in 2002 I had been on campus, community and retail radio consistently for about 4 years.

I remember standing in that line waiting to audition like it was yesterday. My nerves just got the better of me at the first audition and I blew it. I knew that I was better than that and I decided to get back into the line and try again and ended up winning that regional round and made it through to the final week of the competition.

Although I didn’t win it was a foot in the door at the station and I bugged them until they gave me an audition. I was determined to work for Highveld and the thought never crossed my mind to stop trying.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about working at 94.7 Highveld Stereo?

A: I think it has to be the people. Our line up has some serious superstars on it and I am extremely proud to be part of the same team as the likes of Jeremy Mansfield, Alex Jay and Mark Pilgrim. I am often dumbstruck in that building when I realise that I am on the same line up as those legends.

Q: South Africa has a rich history when it comes to radio and radio personalities. If you were to establish a South African Radio Hall of Fame, who would be your first inductee?

A: Alex Jay. He is without a doubt the most genuine, down to earth bloke I have ever met. If anyone in the radio industry could afford to have a big head it would be Alex but there isn’t even the hint of an ego with that man. He is so humble it’s amazing.

Q: What advice would you give those wanting a career in radio?

A: Get used to rejection and never give up. There are nowhere near enough radio stations in South Africa so the amount of on air time slots are very limited. Keep sending demos and bug programming managers until they give you a shot. But also make sure that you are 100 percent prepared when the opportunity presents itself. You might only get one shot.

Q: What are your thoughts on podcasting and do you think it will ever become a threat local radio?

A: I’m in two minds whether podcasts are going to be a threat to radio in South Africa or not. I do think that digital music platforms are however already a threat to local radio. We live in a world of instant gratification and the internet and technology is making it easier and easier to get what we want when we want it.

Life in South Africa

Q: Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?

A: We have but fortunately nothing to serious. It is probably the thing that scares me most about the future of South Africa. I think we have a real problem that needs to get dealt with urgently. I also think there needs to be an adjustment in the way average South Africans think about crime for the situation to get better.

The way I see it is if everyone just took care of what they were doing the authorities would be able to deal with the bigger issues. Having a police officer pull you over for speaking on your cell phone is preventing him from perhaps apprehending a more serious offender. I’m not sure if that make sense. By breaking the law yourself you are contributing to the bigger problem. In my mind shoplifting is the same as robbing a supermarket with a firearm, they are both theft. Granted one is more serious that the other but both are still a crime. What are you teaching your kids by breaking the law, like speaking on your phone while driving? You’re teaching them that it is ok to break the law as long as you don’t get caught and that is not ok in my book.

What really grates my carrot is when people write letters to my local paper bitching about how the metro police hide in the bushes with their speed guns catching people speeding. There is a simple solution to that problem. Don’t speed. If you take care of the little things the big things will take care of themselves. It is up to us as individuals to take care of the little things.

Q: Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?

A: I have thought about it but I do not want to emigrate. After matric I took a gap year (by gap year I mean 3 years) and travelled quite a bit. I lived and worked in the US and the UK and enjoyed living in both but I realised I am South African and this is where I belong.

Q: What are the must-see attractions for visitors to the Soccer World Cup?

A: This country is so vast with so much to see it is difficult to narrow it down. I think time in the bush is a must for any visitor to SA.

Q: South Africa’s greatest export is?

A: The England cricket team.

Life in Johannesburg

Q: If, at the flick of your fingers, you could change anything about life in Johannesburg. What would you change?

A: If we could have Cape Towns beauty this would be the best city in the world to live in.

Q: As a father, what is your families favorite kid friendly restaurant and what would you recommend on their menu?

A: We love Papachinos in Crowthorne. Their pizzas are really good and it’s a great place for the kids. They get to make their own pizzas and they have a really cool area for them to play in with child-minders to keep an eye on them.

Q: If you were tasked with commissioning a postal stamp depicting the beauty of Johannesburg and it’s people, which image would you select?

A: I think the Joburg skyline at sunrise. There is something beautiful about watching the sun rise over the Brixton tower and Ponty on a clear Highveld morning.

Q: You are currently training for the 2010 Comrades marathon. What are your favorite training routes in or around Johannesburg?

A: There are so many. I really enjoy the tree-lined streets in the Ranburg area, especially when the Jacarandas are flowering. There is also a hilly little suburb close to where I stay called Noordkruin that has some of the most spectacular views of Joburg.

General

Q: As a father, radio DJ, voice over artist, emcee and a successful entrepreneur with interests in 3 businesses. Where do you find the time for everything? Do you have any time management secrets that you can share with our readers?

A: I think proper planning is the key. I schedule everything from my runs to my son’s sports games. That way nothing gets forgotten and I manage to work everything in that is important and needs to get done.

Q: Public speaking is rated as one of the most feared activities. What do you enjoy most about it and how did you overcome the natural fear? What is the biggest crowd you’ve MC’d to?

A: I still get nervous when I need to be on stage in front of a lot of people but I’ve learnt to deal with it. I think it just boils down to doing it enough so that you become comfortable with doing it. It’s the old cliché that practice makes perfect. I’ve emceed a few big concerts probably around 12 000 people. But when your eyes are as bad as mine you only see the first few rows of the audience.

Q: Which book would you make required reading for all matric pupils?

A: The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz.

Q: If you had to pick one South African as a mentor, who would it be and why?

A: Madiba. I think he is an amazing man. To go through what he went through and not harbor any hatred is unbelievable. I think we owe much of what we have in South Africa today to him.

Q: Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo and what would you ask them?

A: I am sport mad, anyone sporty would be good. I would love to ask Bruce Fordyce if he thinks he would have been as successful as he was and won 9 consecutive marathons if he was at his peak now in 2010.

We’d like to thank Brad for taking the time to answer our questions and wish him every success for the future.

Izimvo has the great pleasure of introducing Mrs South Africa Semi-finalist: Louise Robinson.

Louise, a working mother of two, is proving that it is never too late to follow your dreams. With the support of her family, Louise entered the Mrs South Africa pageant and has been selected as one of the 15 semi-finalists. The annual competition, held later this year, sets out to highlight the importance of married woman in today’s society.

Louise is hosting a high tea for those in the Ballito area this Saturday, the 6th Feb. The high tea includes a fashion show and is raising funds for the Mrs SA charities, the biggest of which being The Beeld Children’s Fund.

Facebook Group
Location: Ballito

Louise was kind enough to answer the following questions:

Personal

Q: How would you like to be introduced at the Mrs South Africa event?

A: I would love to be introduced as Louise Robinson, the Ballito gal with a heart for people!

Q: Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.

A: I am a total adrenalin junkie! I have bungied at the Vic Falls and have done the big shot in Vegas… OH YA, and I have met Bill Clinton.

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?

A: A good foot massage from my wonderful husband and a devine cup of tea pretty much sorts me out.

Q: How would you describe your dream home and where in South African would you like it to be?

A: My dream home is one that allows for comfortable living (child friendly in other words) and easy entertaining; I would love a huge inviting kitchen / lodging (we normally the destination of choice for our family from Gauteng); and I would love to build it right here in Simbithi!

This question was proudly sponsored by Private Property

The Mrs South Africa Contest

Q: Congrats for being in the regional finals of the Mrs South Africa 2010 competition. What was your motivation for entering the competition?

A: You know what, I want to use it as a platform to do more for underprivileged people. I can help slightly more people together with the Mrs SA opportunity, that is part of my motivation for entering. The other part is to show my girls that if you have a dream, you can achieve it! It does not matter what your circumstances are. With hard work, strong faith, the right attitude and with your heart in the right place you can reach for the stars!

Q: Can you give us a background on the competition and what it involves?

A: The competition, as far as I can see started in the 1970′s. It is a competition that is there to: To highlight the positive role of married women in South African society, make a difference in their lives as well as those around them who embrace the values of marriage within all our diverse cultures. (Vision)

Mission

- To enable married women of all ages to compete as equals
- To honour the rules of fair and just competition
- To elevate the profile of married women in their community
- To host a spectacular pageant and crowning
- To ensure that the Winners are worthy of the Crown and will wear it with pride.
- To assist Mrs SA to compete in Mrs World with the object of winning
- To actively promote the competition and pageant, and all that it stands for, to all married South Africa women.

Values Statement

- Act with integrity
- Be accountable
- Be reasonable
- Take initiative
- Deliver value
- Foster partnership and cooperation
- Value each individual’s ability

The competition involves mostly fundraising for Mrs SA and the charities that they support. The biggest part of the judging process is each contestant’s fundraiser that they host, like my one on Saturday. Two judges will be there as well as the MD of Mrs SA.

Q: You are hosting a High Tea at on the 6th February to raise money for charity. What can guests look forward to and which charities are you supporting?

A: I am so very excited for the High Tea! The ladies are all going to receive the most divine goody bags, filled with things like a 1 month free membership at the Lockeroom, a free in salon hair treatment and blow wave at Scissor Sisters, a R100 off a SunFX spray tan, a free Galvanic Spa treatment voucher, Environ samples and tons more! The generosity of all the businesses involved does not end there, I have more than 25 stunning lucky draw prizes, like x2 free SunFX tanning vouchers, x2 huge flower arrangements by Imbali, x2 WAR Supplements weight loss hampers including a diet plan, a Miglio jewelry gift, x2 Lockeroom 1 year memberships, x2 Sharon Wood photography vouchers, x1 International Fashion Stylist course, x1 box of Simply Slim, x2 Jean Guthrie Beauty Care hampers, x2 non-invasive non-surgical facelift vouchers, x1 R1000 voucher at Secrets Day Spa…HOW COOL ARE THESE THINGS!!!!

AND, to top this “Girly Day” off we are going to have a fashion show, showcasing Maryke’s new clothing range called Thanda, as well as her evening wear and a wedding dress; we are also going to see White Summers new range and Viscaria Ladies Boutique’s clothes! And, the food that Janet from Coco De Mer is preparing is going to be delectable!!!

The funds go to Mrs SA and the charities that they support – the biggest one being The Beeld Children’s Fund.

Q: What would it mean to you personally if you won Mrs South Africa?

A: It would be so wonderful to know that I am going to have a very active role in fund raising and in helping under privilaged people! It would fulfill one of my dreams that I had even before I got married, and it would show my girls that you can do anything if you really want to! And, age is actually just a number…

Q: How do you balance a full-time job as a medical rep & the planning & preparation needed for Mrs South Africa?

A: You know what, by doing my best to prioritise things, and to plan (I have a million little lists)!!!

Q: Do you have any health and fitness secrets?

A: Nutrition is key, so what you eat is the most important thing under the sun, especially if you do not get to the gym as often as you should! So, I use WAR Supplements – the whey protein powder (I drink 3 to 4 shakes a day). It is the only supplement range that has no colourants or preservatives, the healthiest sweetner (sucralose) AND 7 amazing flavours; and I use Transformer sometimes! I do try and go for a walk 2 or 3 times a week in the mornings.

Life in South Africa

Q: Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?

A: I must say that we have been very blessed, we have not been affected by crime.

Q: If you were given the opportunity of sitting down with the president, what advice would you offer him?

A: I would tell him to invest in DSTV…..another child with another lady????

Q: Who do you consider as South Africa’s greatest ever Mrs South Africa?

A: Every year’s winner has great attributes that I could learn from. It would be very difficult to single one out.

Q: South Africa’s greatest export is?

A: According to my little sister it is her, because her and her husband are going skiing in March! She feels she is going to rule the slopes!

Life in Ballito

Q: What do you enjoy most about living in Ballito ?

A: The beauty of the ocean and the peaceful living in Simbithi!

Q: Favorite restaurant in or around Ballito for a romantic night out?

A: Zimbali’s restaurant

Q: First place you would take an international visitor?

A: I have visited Mandela’s house in Soweto and had lunch at the shebeen accross the road from it. Madiba has become synonomous with SA; and I can only imagine how much more an international visitor would enjoy that.

Q: What are your thoughts on the new International Airport opening soon near Ballito?

A: Sounds fantastic and great for business men and woman!

General

Q: If you could invite any three South Africans to dinner, who would you invite and what would you ask them to bring?

A: My Gran, her willingness to always help and her sense of anything can be done through HARD WORK; my Mom, her eternal optimism and her sense of NOTHING is going to get me down; and my husband, his never ending encouragement, help and support!

Q: What does your personal training schedule look like?

A: Uhm, I would LOVE to go to gym daily, but that is not something that I can do at this stage; so I try and go for walks or runs 2 or 3 times a week.

Q: One book that you would make required reading for all matric pupils?

A: The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale.

Q: Where would you like to wake up tomorrow?

A: In San Fransico!!!

Q: Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo and what would you ask them?

A: Volunteers who went to Haiti, and I would like to hear about their experience and how we can help.

We would like to thank Louise for taking time out of her busy schedule to answers these questions and wish her every sucess in the build up to the Mrs South Africa contest being held later this year.

If you would like to attend the High Tea, which is being held at La Coco Mer in Ballito on Saturday the 6th Feb, you can email Louise on lsrobinson@telkomsa.net or call her on 082 920 6476.

Q: The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.

A: Hell this would just never happen, I don’t do social, and I don’t have a friend to introduce me, but my friends know me as rubygold that’ mofo on twitter who don’t got no respect for anyone or anything.

A: The immediacy and the ability to do amazing stuff with a small crew.

Q: How do you go about selecting guests for your show, the Internet Economy, and which of you guests have you most enjoyed interviewing?

A: I see stories on the net and chase them up. Tech PR in South Africa is good they send me a lot of leads. I’ve also sourced many great interviews from Twitter. I have many favourites.

Q: You show at Classic FM, The Internet Economy, is published as a podcast. What are your thoughts on the medium and can you give us an indication how many people are downloading Classic FM’s podcasts?

A: Not enough people download or listen to the podcasts. The show is aimed at a niche and within those small numbers there are a disappointingly low number of people who download the podcasts. I think South Africa needs to be embarrassed that we only have around 10 % about 5 million people with regular Internet access. I think the time of digital media consumption is still to come. The Internet Economy is also a radio show which is podcast and I think when content producers make podcasts and video aimed at the net audience the numbers will grow.

Q: What are some of your fondest memories from your time working with Mark Gillman at 5 FM?

A: We did some great stuff on The Mark Gillman Show. I miss the big adventures most like when Mark went to Antarctica, the Garden Route bus tour with listeners and the Vinyal Frontier parties. I’d love to work with a team again.

Q: What are your predictions for the future of Terrestrial radio?

A: I think all mass media consumption will be via the net eventually.

Life in South Africa

Q: Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?

A: I love South Africa. I had a gun put to my head in the central Johannesburg post office and was robbed by four young guys. I still love South Africa. As a liberation movement the ANC was victorious but at the moment when it comes to government it really is the African National Circus. I think education and health care are amongst the critical issues. It seems to me the government is currently fucking them up.

Q: Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?

A: No.

Q: How would you rate the current government’s performance since the last general election and what would you most want them to improve upon?

A: Corruption in government is a given almost everywhere and it’ll surprise you sometimes how it works but the current levels in South Africa disappoint me almost more than anything.

Q: South Africa’s greatest export is?

A: Gold.

Life in Johannesburg

Q: What do you most enjoy about living in Johannesburg?

A: The summer thunder storms and the trees.

Q: Favorite restaurant for dinner with a group of friends?

A: At the moment I’m loving Turn ‘n Tender Parktown Quarter Centre, Cnr 3rd & 7th Avenue, Parktown North.

Q: What are the must-see destinations in or around Johannesburg for visitors to the Soccer World Cup?

A: I hope they’re informed about the trees. The trees in Jozi WOW.

Q: If you were tasked with commissioning a postal stamp to celebrate Johannesburg and it’s people, which image would you select?

A: The mines and the miners.

General

Q: You are well known for being a prolific twitter user. How has the service changed your life and what are your predictions for how technology will change over the coming years?

A: I love the people on twitter most for helping me pass time in a queues. In the past there would be times where if there was a queue at any store I’d leave. Now I can stand in queue’s like normal people. I think we have little idea about the tech that’ll be around just 20 years from now. I think in the near future a lot more tech will become hidden it’ll just do what it’s designed to do and we won’t think about it much. This started a good while back.

Q: If you could interview any world leader, who would it be and what would your last question be?

A: I don’t think world leaders have the answers at the end of the day. They are politicians and no politician is to be trusted.

Q: If you were to start your own radio station. Which two DJs would you approach for the morning and afternoon drive slots?

A: I’d look for new talent, I think we need a revolution in SA entertainment, there’s a lot of kak out there. I think Gareth Cliff and Fresh on 5fm are great and Darren Scott is fabulous. It’s a great shame not more people recognise the shit they’re watching and listening to.

Q: Which book would you make required reading for all matric pupils?

A: The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins

Q: Favorite South African brand?

A: Brands are bullshit so I don’t really have one. I change my toothpaste every time I buy.

Q: Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo and what would you ask them?

A: David Newton and I’d ask him if he was a virgin.

We’d like to thank Reuben for taking the time to answer our questions and wish him every success for the future.

Izimvo is honoured to introduce freelance photographer and self-confessed madman, Geoff Brink.

Geoff set out on the 28th December to cycle from Durban to Cape Town, on a unicycle! The Heart & Sole tour is traveling across South Africa to raise funds and awareness for the anti-landmine organisation, The Sole of Africa.

Former Izimvo interviewee Fred Hatman, is supporting Geoff on the epic adventure and is documenting every kilometer at http://fredhatman.co.za.

Heart & Sole Tour Updates: http://fredhatman.co.za/
Twitter: http://twitter.com/The_Heartman
Location: Umdloti

Geoff was kind enough to answer the following questions:

Personal

Q: The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? I.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.

A: Geoff Brink, 38, Geoff Brink photography, recently learnt to ride a unicycle.

Q: Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.

A: I can’t deal with dog poo in wet grass. I used to sing in a choir. I can make over 32 real animal noises.

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?

A: I go surfing or bundu bashing in my truck.

Q: How would you describe your dream home and where in South African would you like it to be?

A: The one I am currently living in – wood and thatch surrounded by pristine coastal bush with sea view in Umdloti.

Heart & Sole Tour

Photos: http://fredhatman.co.za/

Q: You are about to set out on a unicycle across South Africa to raise awareness of anti-landmine organisation, The Sole of Africa. What was the inspiration for the adventure and why a unicycle?

A: The inspiration came from a higher source. A unicycle because nobody has ridden one this distance in South Africa before! I am currently over 600km into the journey to Cape Town! I couldn’t even ride a unicycle 4 months ago!

Q: Tell us about the logistics and training that has gone into the trip?

A: Logistics – not my strong point – hence the dwindling cash supply. Training – a couple of rides out to Ballito and Umhlanga – should have done much more, but I’m fit now after 3 weeks on the road!

Q: Which part of your preparation has been most difficult, the physical or the mental?

A: Obviously the physical is important, but you have to be even fitter mentally!

Q: What are your goals for the challenge and how long do you think it will take you?

A: Make it to Cape Town before the 8th May 2010 (my wedding date).

Q: What is the best way for our readers to get involved?

A: Please visit our blog at www.fredhatman.co.za we are running low on travel funds!!! Donations most welcome! Thanks.

Life in South Africa

Q: Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?

A: Ja, I had an old 4×4 stolen 2 years ago, had no insurance so I was very unimpressed to see it go! But exactly a year later the boys in blue recovered it, and to my surprise it had been totally revamped – rust taken out, resprayed, new off road tyres etc, needless to say I was affected in a positive way.

Q: Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?

A: Yes – the republic of Umdloti.

Q: If you had the opportunity to sit down with the president, what advice would you offer him?

A: I would ask him to charge handsomely for public appearances, and then give him the bank details of the heart and sole tour!

Q: South Africa’s greatest export is?

A: Mrs Balls Chutney.

Life in Durban

Q: What do you most enjoy about living in Durban?

A: Johnny’s Rotis, the corner cafe, surfing sans wetsuit, no need for suit and ties.

Q: How have you found the response from Durban’s commuters when out training on your unicycle?

A: Lots of hoots, smiles and waves.

Q: Favorite spots for that all important carbo-loading?

A: The corner cafe in Glenwood, Durban.

General

Q: What are the luxury items that are accompanying you on your trip and what do you think you are going to miss the most?

A: Pillow, Braai grid, & an iPod (soon to be purchased or sponsored).

Q: How do you keep yourself motivated after a tough day on the unicycle?

A: More is nog-a-dag! Hot meal and my pillow.

Q: One book that you would make required reading for all matric pupils?

A: Stranger in a Strange Land (Robert Heinlein)

Q: Favorite South African brand?

A: Pro Nutro.

Q: Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo and what would you like to ask them?

A: Anyone weird, wonderful or original. Why are we here?

We’d like to thank Geoff for taking the time during his inspirational adventure to answer our questions and wish him every success for the journey ahead. We’ll be following his progress with great interest.

Izimvo has the great pleasure of introducing co-founder and MD of Teraco, Lex van Wyk.

Teraco, the first provider of vendor neutral data centres in South Africa, recently made headlines for going live with the first phase of its R60m data centre in Johannesburg. The 1000 sq m facility is billed as a “central node” to a new national telecommunications network. Teraco also operates a data centre in Newlands, Cape Town.

Lex was kind enough to answer the following questions:

Personal

Q: The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event?i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.

A: Lex van Wyk, 41, Teraco Data Environments, Married with 2 kids.

Q: Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.

A: Wanted to study to become a teacher, at the time my parents couldn’t afford it.

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?

A: Spend time in the bush with friends and family.

Q: How would you describe your dream home and where in South African would you like it to be?

A: Comfortable with lots of rooms and space to have many friends around, pool and great view. Ballito seems to be a good place ;-)

This questions was proudly sponsored by Private Property

Teraco

Q: Can you tell us a little about Teraco and the services it provides?

A: Teraco is the first Vendor/Carrier Neutral Data centre provider in SA. We build large very resilient data centres and manage the environment, i.e. Physical access, power and cooling. The differentiator is that our clients have direct relationships with any Telco carrier and/or managed service provider.

Q: What was the impetus for starting the business?

A: Passion for what you do. It takes a huge amount of time to get a business to a point where it operates smoothly, if you go to bed thinking I should do something else rather than about how you can improve things the next day, the business will fail. You are allowed bad days though……

Q: Congratulations on the opening of your 2nd neutral vendor data centre in Isando, Johannesburg. What challenges have you faced in getting the data centre up and running, and what lessons have you learnt for future centres?

A: Thank you, I always want to say “the single biggest challenge outside raising capital in this type of business is to secure sufficient power”. To be honest it is funds, power, Telco infrastructure and a big enough property to allow space for all the infrastructure needed to provide resilience and growth. Then as always a good team to implement this. I am very fortunate to have a great team of people around me.

Q: What advice would you give young Internet entrepreneurs starting out with little or no money?

A: Surround yourself with good people and Cash is king.

Q: Can you give us a little insight as to what it is like behind the scenes at Teraco?

A: Pressure, Very fast moving, pressure and good spirits (sometimes the liquid form when celebration calls for it). Have I mentioned pressure?

Q: How do you hire great talent?

A: Many years ago when I started my career at Valuecom, one of the founders, Lawrence Kreeve, told me “always hire people better than you in every position”. Simply this means, identify your weaknesses and hire people to fill the gaps.

Life in South Africa

Q: Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?

A: Yes, we were in a shop when it got held up by armed men

Q: Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?

A: The topic came up a few times, Switzerland is a big favourite with the family

Q: Given the opportunity, which governmental department would you select to lead?

A: Education, many issues in SA can be fixed if this gets done properly.

Q: To which three attractions would you first take an international visitor?

A: I think for international visitors Cape Town offers it all.

Life in Johannesburg

Q: Best spot for a romantic night out?

A: My favourite restaurant, Villa Bianca.

Q: Favourite venue for team building?

A: Pilanesberg.

Q: What are some of your favourite spots in or around Johannesburg for day trips with your family?

A: Our kids are still small and busy, we are restricted to the quiet Sunday morning movies and friends.

General

Q: Which South African blog do you read on a daily basis and why?

A: I am from the generation before blogs, occasionally visit MarcForrest.com and when in storm I used to read hittingthewire.co.za

Q: If you were able to pick anyone as your mentor, who would it be and why?

A: This is where I am suppose to say Nelson…. No, although I think he achieved amazing things, I am more a follower of business people that achieved success with growing businesses and afforded people opportunities to develop themselves. There are a few people like this and my advice on this point is, “appreciate time you get to spend with as many of these people as possible”

Q: Favorite South African brand?

A: Have to say Teraco….

Q: Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?

A: John Smit and Graham Smith

We’d like to thank you to Lex for taking the time to answer our questions and wish him and the team at Teraco every success for the future.

Sheena was kind enough to answer the following questions for us:

Personal

Q: The all-important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.

A: This is Sheena. She’s not well. Better known online as SheBee, she’s 25 and striving to break into the digital world professionally.

Q: Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.

A: I’m horribly afraid of fish. Lots of people already know that (and tease me endlessly) though, so I suppose I could tell you that my right foot is shrinking. Truly.

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?

A: I’d love to say that it’s something as divine as tanning in the sun with a good book, but truthfully the sun hates me (you should check me peel!) and I can’t really lie still for very long unless I’m engrossed in a vampire series of some kind.

Blogging in South Africa

Q: Which local blogs do you read on a daily basis?

A: I’m terrible, I hardly ever go to the actual blogs (let alone comment) but I flip through my Google Reader at least twice a week and my absolute favourite blogs list as follows:

Baglett (http://baglett.blogspot.com)

Angels Mind (http://angelsmind.co.za) one of my very good friends who has finally found her happy ending.

ExMi (http://expensivemistakescheapthrills.co.za) a psychotic fellow illegal driver and very special mate of mine.

Cath Jenkin (http://cathjenkin.wordpress.com) my non-lesbian soul mate.

iMod (http://imod.co.za) a sexy Capetonian blogger I’ve followed for years who happens to have gotten engaged recently too.

Q: What advice would you give to South African bloggers wanting to turn their passion into a career? Is it possible to be a professional blogger?

A: Of course it’s possible, unfortunately not very often probable. But keeping in mind that my blog is far from professional, and also that I probably shouldn’t be taken at face value for anything, it is my professional belief that you should keep at it, ensuring you have fun while you’re at it. Don’t take sh*t from your troll readers (you’re not a true blogger until someone’s hating you on your own online turf, hey) and be nice to the advertisers. The rest will follow.

Q: There is a fine line between promotion and spam, how do you promote your blog?

A: Other than Twitterfeed, I don’t promote my blog. I used to belong to Amatomu in the hopes that other members would see me in the top ten and click the link, but that whole site went rather pear-shaped and so I did what everyone else was doing (I’m cool and original like that) and jumped the boat. I think I might be with Afrigator still, come to think of it. They’re cool though. Their sister, Adgator gives me free money, so how can I complain?

Q: In what other ways do you engage with your readers?

A: I try respond to all their comments in some way or another, be it in the comments section or in follow-up posts. If requested to elaborate on things, I do if I’m in the mood. I listen to them, chat with them and try to get to know them. I love my readers. More than I love cheese cake, even.

Q: Can you tell us about some of your most popular posts on your blog? What defines a good blog post?

A: Well, there was that one time I accidentally hijacked my own car. Or the time I fell in front of my life-long one true love, Ryan Kankowski. Those were legendary posts to write, if I say so myself.

What defines a good post? I have no idea. When I blog, it’ll be because I was inspired by one minute of real life action or a particular phrase in my head at the time. When I get the urge, I have to sit down and write it there and then, or its lost in sands of time… and these are the days of our lives. I’m easily distracted, my mind is all: LOOK, A DISTRACTION! LET’S NOT DO THIS RIGHT NOW! And then it’s gone, forever and ever amen. So yeah, what makes a good post for me? One that’s finished…

Life in South Africa

Q: Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?

A: Yip. Once, my blanket was stolen right off my bed while I was sleeping. The dudes also made off with my step-dad’s wine collection. But we caught those buggers within hours because they drank the stolen goods and passed out on the railway track not very far from the house. Chops.

More seriously, my little brother is an SAP Dog Unit member and was shot in the head while on duty earlier this year. He almost didn’t make it and that changed our whole family’s perspective of South African crime. It made it more real for all of us. And it makes me cross how lahdidah we’ve all had to become about it. It shouldn’t be this way. But no, in this country or the next one or even the one after that, there will always be crime. I won’t let it affect my perception of SA, it’s a gorgeous country and it’s MY gorgeous country.

Q: Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?

A: Yes I have. My dad, other mother & baby sister immigrated to Land of The Oz. I almost went with them, but changed my mind at the last-minute. I think if I went anywhere, it would be on a long and well-deserved holiday, nothing more.

Q: If you were given the opportunity to sit down with the president, what advice would you offer him?

A: Easy, peasy:

1. Dude, change your fashion style – can you say “laaaaaaaaaaame”?
2. Fire Juleeee-yus. He’s doing you no favours.
3. More importantly, keep up the good work!

Q: To which three attractions would you first take an international visitor?

A: esCape Town: Quay 4 at The Waterfront to experience the worlds greatest Pina Colada. My friend Sue Rutherford introduced me to them.

Hoburg: Brightwater Commons Mimmo’s – they have the best pizza and a music orchestrated water fountain of awesomeness.

Dirtbin: Taco Zulu’s in Florida road. It’s run by a bunch of geek surfer boys and has a kick bum Mexican influenced menu, with loads of stickers and funky Rasta art all over the place to round off an amazing Durban vibe.

Life in Johannesburg

Q: Having recently moved to Johannesburg, what have been the biggest differences from your life in Durban?

A: For one, the boys open my doors here, they’re much less Neanderthal than most of the Durban boytjies. There’s a different vibe here, people work hard but they play hard too. My life is crazy up here, my boyfriend and I are on the go all the time and we literally have to schedule some quiet time at home. I promise, you should see what my Google Calendar looks like.

I miss the ocean though, and sometimes even the humidity. Especially in Winter when I’m walking around whining about the cold and plugging my heater into the nearest available power point.

Q: Who makes the best breakfast in Johannesburg?

A: There’s this awesome little unassuming place called Nikita’s near Hartebeesport Dam. Their breakfasts are fit for a king and the service from Alfred, the head waiter is top-notch.

Q: Where are you doing your Christmas shopping?

A: I’m loving the online shopping vibe this year. My Goodies is a good place to start. Cresta Mall is also up there if I absolutely have to go shopping in person.

General

Q: If you could pick anyone as your mentor, who would it be and why?

A: My mom. She’s awesome. She’s overcome so much emotionally and personally, yet she can still kick back on the deck at home and make us all giggle. At the age of 40 she decided she hated her career, gave it all up and studied for a few years and now is the owner of her own little empire. I’m very proud to be her daughter.

Q: Favorite gadget that you could not live without?

A: My Blingberry (it’s a bedazzled pink & white Blackberry). No, my Mac. No, no, definitely the Blackberry.

Q: One book that you would make required reading for all matric pupils?

A: The Spud series. A must read for all South African scholars. Educational too. Okay, not really, but highly entertaining.

Q: Where would you like to wake up tomorrow?

A: In bed with my better half, on a beach somewhere in Zanzibar. Where he will feed me chocolate covered edible glasses of bottomless Pina Colada. A girl can wish, right?

Q: Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?

A: Angel Swemmer of Angels Mind. She’s an inspirational [ex] single mother helping those in need, supporting those who support those who suffer from ADHD. She also bakes the best cupcakes on planet Earth, plans weddings and has the most amazing personality I’ve ever known.

We’d like to thank Sheena for taking the time to answer our questions and wish her every success for the future.

Rafiq was kind enough to answer the following questions for us:

Personal

Q: The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.

A: Rafiq Phillips, 26, work as an SEO specialist at Naspers’ www.mihswat.com consulting to some of the largest Internet companies throughout the developing wwworld during the day while at night my project www.idrive.co.za which connects learner drivers with the best driving schools in South Africa. I’ve been blogging since 1999- coding HTML in notepad.

Q: Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.

A: I do not eat butter or margarine, ever. Never have, never will.

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?

A: I really enjoy fishing in the mountains just outside Cape Town. Do not get there nearly enough.

Blogging in South Africa

Q: Which local blogs do you read on a daily basis?

A: I usually catch up with blogs on my mobile phone using Google Reader mobile before I go to bed. There are too many to mention. Best see my Google Reader Shared items on my profile http://www.google.com/profiles/rafiq.phillips

Q: What advice would you give to South African bloggers wanting to turn their passion into a career?

A: Don’t give up your day job. It takes a lot of patience and consistency. I’ve heard many people talk about starting their blogs for many months even years and have not gotten as far as writing their firsts posts. Jut do it!

Q: There is a fine line between promotion and spam, how did you promote your blog in the early days?

A: I didn’t :) I used www.webaddict.co.za as a testing bed for seo and blogged about technology that I was passionate about or found interesting. There was a very small tech blogging community back in 2005/2006 and we just happened to stumble upon each others blogs while Googling.

Q: As a local technology enthusiast, which South African technologies have you the most excited?

A: There is not one specific technology that really excites me. Rather the way in which technology is used to solve South African problems. A few examples would be Reconstructed Living Labs http://www.rlabs.org/ who are using a host of technologies to battle drug abuse, gangsterism and raise HIV/Aids awareness.

Q: What are your thoughts on the Silicon Cape Initiative?

A: Any initiative that focuses attention on the local tech scene is a good one.

Q: Can you tell us about some of your most popular posts on Web AddiCT?

A: You are able to view the popular posts from any page on Web AddiCT(s); A post becomes popular once it receives continuous media attention or becomes mainstream. I didn’t really answer that did I?

Life in South Africa

Q: Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?

A: I do not believe there is a person in any country that has not been affected by crime. You should always take precaution no matter where you are. A little common sense should keep you safe.

Q: Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?

A: NO.

Q: If you were given the opportunity to sit down with the president, what advice would you offer him?

A: Don’t preach what you practice.

Q: To which three attractions would you first take an international visitor?

A: Table mountain, Cape Point via Boulders beach and the Waterfront.

Life in Cape Town

Q: Favorite restaurant for a romantic dinner?

A: Tought one, there aren’t many Halaal restaurants in Cape Town that can be considered romantic.

Q: Who makes the best coffee in Cape Town?

A: Our coffee machine at the MIH SWAT office by far.

Q: Which of the various malls in or around Cape Town would you recommend for Christmas shopping?

A: The Internet. I don’t do Christmas shopping and am not a big fan of malls.

General

Q: If you could pick anyone as your mentor, who would it be and why?

A: MXit CEO, Herman Heunis. I Admire the way he runs his business.

Q: Favorite South African sporting moment of the last 10 years?

A: 1995 Rugby Word Cup final.

Q: One book that you would make required reading for all matric pupils?

A: Robert Kiyosaki’s Cashflow Quadrant. You’d have to read Rich Dad, Poor Dad too

Q: Where would you like to wake up tomorrow?

A: Where I’ll be waking up on the 21st of December: next to my wife :)

Q: Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?

A: Gavin Marshall

A massive thank you to Rafiq for taking the time to answer our questions. We wish him every success for the future.

Recent runner-up in the Jump 2009 E-Commerce awards for the best property website, Private Property was started in 1999 and operated out of Justin’s converted garage for a number of years. Today, the site ranks as one of South Africa’s most popular and the first stop for anyone looking to buy or sell property.

Justin was kind enough to answer the following questions for us:

Personal

Q: The all important personal profile. How would a close friend introduce you at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, interesting fact etc.

A: Justin Clarke, Most known for his part in the Private Property story, 46-year-old varsity drop out has a serious history as a serial entrepreneur with a dangerous infatuation with risk …..

Q: Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything from a phobia to your favorite movie.

A: I have used a slide rule to do calculations… and a telex for instant messaging…

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?

A: Out door action will do it for me…was totally hooked on skiing, (I say was because it was the undoing of me when I broke my back in Austria earlier this year) – it’s really insane and got all the ingredients to really take you into another world, white powder everywhere, natural speed and control without horsepower, and when you are flying down a mountain your mind is far from work stuff. But remember not to get too much air between the skis’ and the mountain. Oh yes… and the Après Ski party is pretty good too…

Business in South Africa

Q: What advice would you give young entrepreneurs starting out with little or no money?

A: Enjoy it, you have nothing to lose and all to gain. It’s amazing what you can achieve when you are lean. If you have the passion and you really believe in the outcome you can really do anything, you just have to keep plugging at it. And don’t let go…

Q: What, for you, have the highlights been over the last 11 years for Private Property?

A: I suppose the first annual conference organised by our VC partners, meeting and mixing with some of the world internet gurus at the Four Seasons in New York. From a garage start-up in one vertical in a very small market to hanging with the big league was just insane.

Q: To what extent do you feel that marketing plays in a company’s success and what lessons do you think we can learn from success stories such as your own?

A: Private Property is the biggest search word combination for browsers searching Google for property. That means something I guess. Most of our traffic is still URL specific and that has come from an obscene amount of cash spent on marketing over the last 10 years.

But the world has changed and to get customers now you need endorsement from other customers. So it’s about positive PR and Social Networks more than it’s ever been. For a startup that’s great because it’s not expensive to get that ball rolling. Where do you see Google, Facebook, Twitter etc advertising above the line?

Q: What has the recently market slump meant for Private Property? Are you finding that buyers are doing more research and are looking for ways to avoid costs such as agent fees?

A: Interesting, the opposite is true. Sellers who are distressed are just looking for an outcome, agents deliver the outcome without any upfront fees so that is where the seller goes in a tight market. But the slump meant big changes for us! We wanted to include all the property on our portal for a better browser experience, and that meant bringing in the industry.

The tough market made the marriage easier because we needed each other. So we bought all our franchised offices back, shut them down, and let private sellers do their own online listing. Then we opened to estate agents who can now post on our site.

End result post recession – we are an internet business leading our vertical, and not a low-cost private sale estate agent like we were trying to be. GREAT comes out of bad! Hey, and it’s even better for private sellers as well.

Life in South Africa

Q: Have you or any of your immediate family been affected by crime? If yes, has it changed your perception of the country and the way you and your family live your lives?

A: My family lives in New Zealand because of crime and it’s a big challenge for us saffas. I DIG Africa, always have. We have an awesome country, rich with resources, great people filled with spirit, diversity and courage. If we just get our economy to grow faster we would have less unemployment and more of our 49 million people would be part of the system, not el-desperados’ with no hope and nothing to lose.

Q: Have you ever considered emigration? If yes, where do you think you would emigrate to?

A: Yes, I had a business venture in Swaziland in the 80’s which I lost as a result of corruption. I was seriously pissed off and wanted to go live the American Dream, to be protected by a constitution that entrenched my rights, etc…. then some wise men wrote an equally good constitution for us and I decided to live the South African Dream. Chuffed with that!

Q: If you were South African president for just one day, what would you change?

A: Implement the recommendations of the Harvard Group.

Q: To which three attractions would you first take an international visitor?

A: Beach, Ponto de Oro in Mozambique (just the other side of the Kozi Bay border). Mountain, for you okes in the Mother city I guess the cable to the top of the Table. Bush, would have to be Phinda, KZN North Coast.

Life in Durban

Q: What is your favorite event on the Durban social calendar?

A: Do we have a calendar in Durban?

Q: When planning that perfect night out with that someone special, which Durban restaurant would be your first choice?

A: Spiga’s Florida Road. Fashionable but unpretentious, open pavement cafe vibe, lively, cosmopolitan.

General

Q: If you were able to pick anyone as your mentor, who would it be and why?

A: I could be PC, but I think I would with Richard Branson, he’s done it all without getting too serious.

Q: Where would you like to wake up tomorrow?

A: Wouldn’t mind waking up standing on my legs, on a beach at sunrise!

Q: Favorite South African band? Have you seen them live and do you own at least one of their albums?

A: Hey we have some wicked local sounds, but I am big on the Parlatones. Seen them at the barnyard in Durbs, and iPod is fully loaded.

Q: Who would you most like to read about on Izimvo?

A: You okes are doing a great Job, keep up the current mix…
